Well its been about a year now since I started drawing again and one of my first drawings was of a raven (currently used as my avatar
) So felt it was time to have another go, decided to add a barrow burial mound in the background covered in snow as its chilly at the moment.The scene looked pretty bleak to me so added a dash of colour from a holly tree just poking into the picture and it gives things a more festive feel.
I used a slightly larger than A4 Bristol smooth board a 0.5 mechanical and 2b/4b pencils for the drawing plus gimp to add snow, oh yes and picasa to bump the contrast a bit after scanning.
I'd like to wish a very merry Christmas/Yuletide to all viewers, watchers and fine upstanding deviantart members.

Beautiful, and I especially like the passage tomb. Very appropriate for the winter solstice. The sun will be shining down the passage on the 21st

Thank you,I was going to draw snowy mountains at first (in the background) but then thought about barrows and tombs and the idea was very appealing to me. Might be a bit too cloudy for the sun in my drawing, maybe it'll clear up by the 21st

Thank you, yes its tricky getting deep blacks for me, plus would lose detail on the feathers, ravens can look jet black or quite light depending on how the light hits them I find.

Great pic, lots of details on feathers but I think it lack more deep black for shine on feathers, although I really like red berries as flavor to the whole pic

Thank you, I find mechanical pencils help with feathers a lot, I started using them recently no worries with blunt pencils hehe

you couldn't had picked a better subject to draw.This is work at it's best I love the detail on this it's perfected....I t hink it came out fine I would love to look at this piece colored in maybe that would bring the sun more into focus like you want it....beautiful work

Thank you for your comment, added the weak winter sun on a whim, very hard to get looking right,not full sun but just a hint coming through snow filled clouds. That was my thinking anyway
