This depiction of Ridley is based off of artwork found in original game's manual.
Yeah, I seriously like this Ridley the best. Dragons are some of the most generic looking creatures, so something called a "Space Dragon" should look really weird, which is good thing.

It's funny how ridley turned out to be some mutated anteater in metroid 1 and then turned into a pteranodon type thing in the rest of metroids.

Yeah, I like this design much better. His pterodactyl inspired design was only effective for one game, and that was Super Metroid. SInce then, he's gotten so much more generic, and that much more popular.
I notice that most video game fans like generic designs the best. All of the shotoclones from Street Fighter best exemplify this.

Honestly, I like the actual dragon design Nintendo went with for Ridley. Yes, it doesn't look as 'alien' as this one, but it just seems to fit imo. I also love how the design they went with makes him look like he's starving or something. The whole skin-and-bone thing is only offset by the muscle, which makes him look much more menacing than this one, especially in the 3D games like the Prime trilogy.

I don't mind Ridley's more current design(well, at least from Metroid Fusion and every game before), but I would've preferred this one.
In recent games, especially the prime games, Brawl, and the disgraceful Other M, he's just too dragonlike. And frankly, I find dragons to be some of the dullest, most overused creatures ever designed.
The skin and bone is fine, it's just his head design is getting more generic all the time.

Aren-Kitsune In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2012-05-16 17:26:54 +0000 UTC]
I'm probably a little biased here since I actually love most dragons, but I will admit that he is getting more generically dragon-like, and I find three forms of/fights with him in the same game almost too much.
I agree his head shape and such have turned more 'standard-dragon' over the years, and actually, I think Zero Mission had the right head for Ridley, just the shape of it and such really worked to keep him dragon-like and alien at the same time.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Aren-Kitsune [2012-05-16 18:28:18 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I guess. I liked his design more up until Super Metroid. Everything after started going a bit downhill, but didn't get so generic until Other M.
I wish Kraid got as much attention as RIdley. He's just as cool in my opinion.

I haven't seen Ridley in Other M yet, but I'm definitely enjoying the game, and don't understand the amount of hate it gets.
Yes! Kraid, while not the most challenging fight in the old games compared to a bastard that flies all over the place, Kraid is still really fun to fight ^^
I think the reason he kind of got phased out was because of his size alone. I mean, Ridley's big, but Kraid is just massive; there's no way he'd fit on a Space Pirate ship, unfortunately :/
I like that Phantoon and Nightmare made a comeback, but again, it sucks that the rest of the series is without them.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Aren-Kitsune [2012-05-21 16:07:16 +0000 UTC]
I don't really think his size would be a factor. When you have a sci-fi game about space dragons and leech-like parasites in space, any ties to reality are gone.

Aren-Kitsune In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2012-05-21 16:47:34 +0000 UTC]
Fair enough XD I still doubt even in the Metroid universe it would be easy to build a ship big enough for Kraid XD

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Aren-Kitsune [2012-05-21 21:38:55 +0000 UTC]
That's why the original games were better, since most of the action took place on a planet, as opposed to a ship.

Aren-Kitsune In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2012-05-24 04:51:26 +0000 UTC]
That's true, the planet-side Metroids have always been better.
That said, and I know I'm going to get major flak for this but, Other M, despite being on a massive ship, has to be the most fun I've ever had in a Metroid game. The usually fast pace, the fact it's much more story driven than any other Metroid game, the explanations of her past, a great cinematic remake of Super Metroid's final moments, and the overhead attacks/finishing moves. Urgh! I love them! She might be cool as a quiet badass in the other games, but I don't think that can come close to something like grabbing a war wasp by the leg and hurling it across a room.

Oh I'm not saying the silent Samus was bad for being solitary, but in Fusion, it talks about Adam Malkovich and her working for the GF, but you never even see anyone from the GF until Prime 2, and they're dead or insane if I'm not mistaken.
In Other M, she does take orders from Adam, but that's because she knows that it's technically his mission, and she wants to help, and the agreement for that is to follow Adam's command.
Everyone has to start somewhere, and Samus was bred to fight since a small child because of her lost parents, and the attack on her Chozo family; so really, she could still be fairly young, but is just very mature because of what she has to deal with.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to Aren-Kitsune [2012-05-25 06:05:21 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, true. But some of my friends who played Other M think she almost sounded bimbo-ish.
I would've liked to see a game that delved into her past following the events of the Nintendo Power comics. Or even more different, have a game that introduces the metroids and such, but before Samus got on the case, like the Metroid 1 instruction manual.
Now having a thought, I'd love to play as a Chozo.

Maybe I just haven't been playing Other M long enough to notice that, but I have yet to find her anything like that. Honestly, I see more the young, kid side of her that she's never shown. She's young, any big fan I think knows that, but it's never shown in the other games. And, even if she does seem too much like a child at times, it provides a look into her head at certain points, like when it explains the origin of the line, "Any objections, lady?" and more detail on why her computer calls her "Lady" in Fusion, which, beyond a few dialogue boxes and not very in-depth ones at that, was never explained. It even shows just how much Ridley affected her mentally, which, beyond the two always trying to destroy each other, and Samus getting angrier, and angrier at him (Prime 3's ending of the first fight comes to mind here), it shows us why he's one of the main antagonists of Fusion and the Primes, and why the final bosses tend to take a bit of a backseat.
Personally, I've never read the NP comics (I wasn't subscribed until those ended after the N64 and Gamecube were out), but I know some of the story of them, and why it's actually kind of essential to the storyline. In my honest opinion, Metroid has some massive story gaps in it -- not plot-holes, but gaps. Missing links between the games that don't quite add up; like Super Metroid and Fusion. There's a massive gap there, mainly because Malkovich is mentioned in Fusion, but nowhere else in the series. Other M tries -- and does quite well imo -- to fill in a few blanks between Metroid 3 and 4, and the next one I think should either be a prequel to Prime 1, or Metroid 1.
That is an amazing idea! Hell, I really think it would be neat to play as an elite Space Pirate or something. Yeah, the ending would be Samus kills you or you lose anyway, but it would be an interesting take on the series. Not to break up the Metroid formula or anything, but I think most series should have a game or two that does something new and different -- not too much, but a little bit.

Aren-Kitsune In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2012-05-28 21:04:33 +0000 UTC]
Which, with the introduction of other hunters, they managed to do, and do well. The main problems with the game is the crappy controls, lack of lock-on like in the rest of the Prime games, bosses that were more repetitive than any other game (Seriously, the first two bosses were different, then every boss afterwards, except the final one, were just alternating between the first two with slight variations), plus the story was kind of strange.

the reason Ridley looks like that in the old artwork is because the North American localization team wasn't given any official artwork to use, so they looked at the sprites and made their own
It's still fun to see this spin on that depiction of him!
