Phobos-Romulus — The Chozo

Description My entry for 's Chozo and Luminoth art contest.

Also wanted to point out something interesting to any Alien fans. The Metroid series almost parallels the Alien movies in terms of plot and characters. The most obvious being the lead female protagonists, Samus and Ripley. A chart can be seen here:
[link]

But one aspect of both the first Metroid and Alien that has been overlooked is the appearance of Alien fossils. So I believe that the Chozo are indeed inspired by the Space Jockey. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Critiques are welcomed as always.

I never thought about it before but yeah there are a lot of similarities between the two franchises. Very cool design by the way. Although is that a Metroid egg or a power up he's holding?

It's definitely not a Metroid egg. It probably is a powerup, but I honestly can't remember which one.

This is awesome!
I was going to say Torizo but it's beak is shaped differently.
As Torizo beaks go downwards and their backs are larger and their legs don't arch as much as the Chozo.
The legs on this guy still resemble the Chozo ghosts seen in Metroid Prime.

I never thought of Torizo as a different species than the chozo, I always thought Torizo was just a name or something.

Yeah even the gold one was called an Torizo.
I always thought they were either a wilder species of Chozo or a defense cyborg that were part Chozo and part machine created by the Chozo to protect their technology.

In Metroid Zero Mission some of the statues had pointier beaks.
While the one in Metroid Fusion had a diffrent name but looked similar to the ones in Super Metroid.

The Zero Mission ones had that more streamlined look, which I don't care for as much.

One had a beaten up beak. XD

Maybe their more streamline to show the difference between Chozo and Torizo, just my thoughts.

Metroid's entire look got more streamlined after the prime games, not just the chozo. To each his own, but I prefer the clunkier 80's and 90's Metroid designs.

You're not alone I liked Ridley's sprite better in Super Metroid. XD

I almost prefer the manual artwork of Ridley from Metroid 1, his design has much more of a science fiction bend to it.

It really does and in my opinion he resembled the Xenomorphs from Alien a lot.

Yeah, but still different enough to not be a total ripoff.

I always thought they were a type of Chozo just wilder or a type of defense cyborg which are part Chozo and part machine that the Chozo built to protect their weapons.
The gold one in Super Metroid was also called an Torizo.

Some of the Chozo statues on Metroid Zero Mission have pointier beaks than the Torizo and the Chozo statues on Super Metroid and the ones on Metroid Fusion.
The one on Fusion even had a different name.
This just makes me think that there were different species of the Chozo.

Or even some kind of rebel class.

TheOneTrueSirCharles In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-07-03 03:04:39 +0000 UTC]

Probably so, I always thought if they were Chozo wouldn't they be nice to Samus?

Though at the end of Zero Mission the spirits tested her to get her Gravity Suit.
The Chozo ghosts in Prime attacked because they were corrupted but at the end there were more Chozo ghosts at Impact Crater which did not try to attack as if they remembered Samus.

Yeah, or possibly Chozos under mind control from Mother Brain perhaps?

I haven't played the prime games at all, so I don't really pay attention to their plots.

TheOneTrueSirCharles In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2014-07-03 07:24:05 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps, that's a good thought too.

I just finished Metroid Prime 2: Echos and now on Prime Hunters, which is my least favorite. XD

I'm trying to play the games in chronological order.
Starting in Metroid and Metroid: Zero Mission then Prime and Prime 2 now Hunters, next Prime 3.

Yeah, Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time. I love Metroid 1 and 2 for their look and feel, but they're a little clunky. I liked Fusion and Zero Mission enough, but they were too linear compared to Super.

Seeing as how Torizo is just an animated Chozo statue, I don't refute this.

TuviaDulin [2012-04-30 22:05:57 +0000 UTC]

The chozo are indeed based on the space jockeys.

I think this is the best chozo fan art that I've seen so far. Lots of people make them "bird people." Yours looks like an alien that just happens to have some superficially birdlike features. Its also not all stylized with a ridiculously skinny waist or shoulder spikes or whatnot.

I like.

Thanks man! Yah, I don't like how the Chozo's design evolved over the years. Got too streamlined and fancy.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to xX-Alloy-Xx [2010-12-07 18:21:39 +0000 UTC]

Must've overlooked that.

What power suit? I just tried modeling him after the original chozo statues you see in the first 2d games.

xX-Alloy-Xx In reply to Phobos-Romulus [2010-12-08 01:00:17 +0000 UTC]

Well the prime series (Well mostly 3) had pictures of chozo wearing a type of power armor similar to samus and the statue.

It bears noting that the first Metroid game was in part inspired by Alien, and as a token of that connection, a certain villainous space-dragon (who, in his original 8-bit incarnation, bore some resemblance to the Giger-designed xenomorph) was named after the film's director, Ridley Scott.

Phobos-Romulus In reply to gzegzolka [2010-11-30 18:06:09 +0000 UTC]

Just the fact that they're a third party(besides the Humans and main Aliens) and the statues remind me of the fossilized jockey.
