Meh, don't worry about your English, I understood what you were saying fine.
I do know what you mean. Lord of the Rings really did make a very blatant contrast between good and evil. I love the stories Tolkien told in everything related to the books, and I don't mind his goody two-shoes elves, but a lot of people these days don't seem to realize that it's pretty much all his fault that elves are all portrayed as fair, beautiful, flawless beings in pretty much every stereotypical fantasy story now. At the time Tolkien wrote those books, that was a new, interesting idea, making them good guys. But then, after that, everybody who wrote fantasy started making them beautiful and flawless. They didn't used to be that way. Elves, like you said, used to be evil and mischievous.
People are only just beginning to see Orcs as anything other than evil, now that people are getting more into them as a warrior race and not just the gross, evil creatures Tolkien made them out to be.

If we're talking about different fantasy worlds, my favourite and probably the most reasonable is Disc World by Terry Pratchett, here elves are evil C:< But It's not so complex as Tolkien's world (btw. how it calls ? Not Middle-earth but whole this world). And action there is more spontaneous but less poetic, and definitely more satiric ^^
I understand that this was new idea, but still it's so old thinking.. This is evil and has no good inside and this is good and has no evil inside.. It's too simple even for times when Tolkien lived. and Elves... Arghh but I said what I thinking about them. I love in Tolkien's books, that they (books) are so poetic, that when you're reading the book you see this world. I never before had so many ideas for illustrations how when I was reading Fellowship of the ring. I love that is so complex have history for few thousands years and this history sounds like truly chronicle. But.. but .. another senseless thing .. this world have few thousands years and still there is Middle Ages..

Haha, I assume that because of the world being so magic and dominated by creatures of old and whatnot, that that would be the reason why they're always in Middle Ages type setting even after so much time has gone by, but that's a lame excuse. I don't mind, though...Lord of the Rings just wouldn't be the same if it was modern!
As for the elves being entirely good in Tolkien's books...that's actually not entirely true. Galadriel, for instance, showed a particular weakness toward the One Ring. She was mostly good, but that part of the books in particular showed that the elves weren't entirely without their own corruption...and weren't immune to falling prey to being corrupted or becoming ambitious or evil. So there is that. And there was talk in the books about how a lot of people outside the Woodland Realm considered her to be an evil witch or a sorceress, though that was just misunderstood for the most part.
But evil in Tolkien's books really is just plain evil most of the time with no redemption, it seems, except for when it influences outside parties such as the race of men. Like Boromir, and his father. They weren't entirely evil...just that they fell too easily under the sway of evil's grasp. Gollum you pity half the time because he's so pathetic, almost like an addict that's become prey to their own addiction beyond the point of recovery, to the point that very little of what they used to be is still there.
Though admittedly, the Silmarillion gave more depth to Sauron and Melkor, more than the stories in Lord of the Rings was able to tell. It makes me really happy to see an artist like Phobs actually draw them out this way.
The universe in Tolkien's books is called Ea, by the way. <3 Middle-Earth is just one of the lands in it.

Ea ? Only Ea ? Okk
Yesss.. I modern times this wouldn't has the same undertone.
Hmm .. Galadiel gave up the ring, but still she was so beautiful so judicious, immortal etc. FOr the rest I agree so this ending of discussion. Now I want to ask : did you ever read T. Pratchett books ? They are more light to read and more entertainment than Tolkien's books, but have more modern, rational and fresh approach to the world. And ofcourse it's way more cynical <3 and funny, there was few times when I almost didn't suffocated with laughter. If you didn't I very recommend.
Yes Phobs is really great but I disagree with her idea of Batu Khan, in this case I'm absolutely sure that he was more manly

Actually, it's Eä, I forgot the accent mark. But yeah, it's still a two-letter name.
I'll have to look into T. Pratchett's books more. I don't think I've ever read any of his stuff, so I'll check into that sometime whenever I have the time to spare. Sounds like his books are pretty interesting.
As for how Phobs draws Batu...I don't mind, hahaha. I don't expect complete historical accuracy from those drawings, it's artistic license, and they're accurate enough. And really entertaining. Besides, girly Batu with big, manly Subotai is pretty hilarious.

Pretty much, but.. I can't XD when I see it.. I know little about Polish Tatars predominantly they was political refugees from Golden Horde (founded by Batu Khan) So I have concept how they really looks like, that's why womanly Batu teasing me.
Subotai ? Isn't it in english Subutai ? In polish this is Subedei (exactly Subedej) Ah there is one thing which I don't like over all, this how Batu treats Subutai, I know this is for joke but ...u know.
I don't like jokes in style when someone degrades another human, more in ridiculous style like mongols on rocking horses

Ophelos In reply to CrocInCrocs [2012-10-15 20:14:48 +0000 UTC]
Ah, seems you're right, it is Subutai, my mistake. I looked it up to be sure, haha.
Haha, well...as far as Batu treating Subotai the way he does, I think it's very typical behavior of a spoiled rotten prince who treats a servant/butler like crap on the surface...but it's obvious that he cares for Subutai, even despite acting like an ass to him a good 90% of the time. He just doesn't show it very well. Some form of tough love, basically.

CrocInCrocs In reply to Ophelos [2012-10-15 20:37:19 +0000 UTC]
I mean, if real Batu Khan would dare to call Subutai "old fart" probably he'd get hit .. Mongols was pretty sharp. I have one unpleasant suspicion that Phobs willingly would draw yaoi with Batu and Subutai.. I saw something like that, but I don't remember where. I hope I'm wrong cuz.. that would be an absolutely an abomination, don't you think ? Ah, and I'm not homophobic, just there is things would people shouldn't to do.

*shrug* Doesn't bother me any. I can see where, in the way she portrays them, it could be rather cute actually. Not true to history, but cute nontheless. They have a dynamic where I think it'd work. It's out there, but I wouldn't call it an "abomination".
But I personally don't care who ships what. Whatever floats your boat, I say.

CrocInCrocs In reply to Ophelos [2012-10-15 21:13:58 +0000 UTC]
I mean "abomination" would be gay Batu Khan.. it's just.. no.
But I must sound like I'm picking on kid, so maybe it's right time to shut up.

Ophelos In reply to CrocInCrocs [2012-10-15 21:20:47 +0000 UTC]
Well, keep in mind, Phobs probably doesn't really think Batu was gay in reality. You have to remember that these are just portrayals of these people, not the real things. They're practically her characters, in a way.

In the old ages Sauron has a youthful and attractive appearance, but during the destruction of Numenor his physical form is destroyed, and he becomes the eye of fire seen in the Lord of the Rings.
