Description Sorry that is a HUUUGE file. You can download it, too.
If you are having any problems or have a question, tell me! I can try to help.

REMEMBER: This is NOT the only way to do things on opencanvas, it's merely the basics of what I do. THERE IS NO CORRECT WAY TO DO ANYTHING.

DO check out other tutorials people have made, they are seriously amazing and superior compared to the likes of this here tutorial. DO come up with your own techniques to make your art scream your name all over it. DO experiment with the tools.

Some Questionsfor your convenience and mine lol

Is Opencanvas 1.1 available for Apple computers/Mac?
Not that I know of, unfortunately. You can try the newer versions of OC, though.
Do I have to pay for Opencanvas 1.1? Is it a trial?
No; this version of opencanvas is completely free. No; you can download this program and have it forever on your computer unless you uninstall it.
How come everything is written in weird symbols?
It should appear as Japanese if you have the language pack installed on your computer or something. To switch to english, go to the top of the taskbar, go to the very last drop down list (H) and at the bottom it will say English (E).
How can I add a background without the colors getting all weird/dark?
I think I mentioned that somewhere here, maybe not. Since the layer is autoamtically set to multiply, you'll either have to put the background on a new layer and ERASE parts of the background where it OVERLAPS the coloring on your other layer, OR you can just do the background on the same layer as all your other coloring.
What is OCing/networking, and how do I do that?
Networking on Opencanvas 1.1 is a bit like paintchat, only it's private and can only have a maximum of 4 occupants. You draw on your own individual layers, but share the same canvas with others, so you can see everyone drawing. Found a tutorial on how to set that up here .
Can I use this tutorial for [insert program here] ?
You can, but obviously you might have to tweak a few things since programs are different, but I don't see why you can't copy a technique from opencanvas to use for photoshop or whatever, so try it.
How do I blend?
Assuming you are using a tablet, pretend it is like pencil and paper. The harder you press, the darker the pencil mark; the lighter you press, the lighter the pencil mark. Apply this to your tablet and mess around with it.

Check this youtube video that I made about how to blend/shade. Hopefully it will help: [link]

I'm still having problems with pressure sensitivity.
See that white box in the brushes window? Make sure that line is dragged more toward the bottom right corner.

Also, check out the brush settings- the minimum and general sizes. Examples here: [link]

Thanks for the tutorial
But when I open a new layer, how can i do it that the colours of the new layer don't overlay my lines from the old layer

This version of open canvas is quite old and doesn't have many great options for layers. Unfortunately to prevent the colors from overlaying, you have to erase the color from one layer or the other :/ It's tedious for sure. There are a number of free programs out there where you don't have to do worry about that so I would look into those!

how do you put drawings to youtube?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pichu4850 In reply to CrissyAngel [2014-07-16 02:26:43 +0000 UTC]

Using a video editor (like premiere, windows movie maker, imovie, etc) you can make videos that include pictures (as stills) uploaded from your computer. Some screen recording software is available (some are free, some are trials, some you have to buy) where you can record the activity happening onscreen as you are drawing a digital picture, for example.Β

It's possible - it's been a while since I've checked in on this program, so I'm not sure if it is still available, but yes, you can use a mouse to draw. I used a mouse for many years before switching to a drawing tablet.

this is wonderful! although i was wondering, i noticed with paint tool sai there is a specific layer type for linework. is that the same for open canvas? or did you just open a new, normal layer for the linework??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pichu4850 In reply to XoBeyondBirthdayoX [2013-08-27 06:15:50 +0000 UTC]

Hi, sorry for the late response. Thank you. I am not familiar with PTS, so I'm not sure whether I can answer your question. All I can tell you is that with this version of opencanvas (1.1), any new layer defaults to multiply, where you get a weird kind of transparency to the layer. If you are confused about layers, I suggest you do some google research about them because they can be tricky with all sorts of options and settings even I'm still confused by them sometimes.

One question. I always draw my sketches on paper, and scan them. If I open it on openCanvas and save it as a WPB file, and open it again as a WPB file, would it still save went I do layers on the sketch?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pichu4850 In reply to Feesu-san [2013-05-08 08:33:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes it should save the layers all separately! Only if you save it as a .jpeg or a .bmp will it combine them all.

I know how you feel! A tip I've heard about but never picked up on personally is to draw really large (large canvas size, large brush size) and draw and smoothly as possible, and then shrink the image to the appropriate size you want to get even more smoothness.
