Description
Sorry that is a HUUUGE file. You can download it, too.If you are having any problems or have a question, tell me! I can try to help.
REMEMBER: This is NOT the only way to do things on opencanvas, it's merely the basics of what I do. THERE IS NO CORRECT WAY TO DO ANYTHING.
DO check out other tutorials people have made, they are seriously amazing and superior compared to the likes of this here tutorial. DO come up with your own techniques to make your art scream your name all over it. DO experiment with the tools.
Some Questionsfor your convenience and mine lol
Is Opencanvas 1.1 available for Apple computers/Mac?
Not that I know of, unfortunately. You can try the newer versions of OC, though.
Do I have to pay for Opencanvas 1.1? Is it a trial?
No; this version of opencanvas is completely free. No; you can download this program and have it forever on your computer unless you uninstall it.
How come everything is written in weird symbols?
It should appear as Japanese if you have the language pack installed on your computer or something. To switch to english, go to the top of the taskbar, go to the very last drop down list (H) and at the bottom it will say English (E).
How can I add a background without the colors getting all weird/dark?
I think I mentioned that somewhere here, maybe not. Since the layer is autoamtically set to multiply, you'll either have to put the background on a new layer and ERASE parts of the background where it OVERLAPS the coloring on your other layer, OR you can just do the background on the same layer as all your other coloring.
What is OCing/networking, and how do I do that?
Networking on Opencanvas 1.1 is a bit like paintchat, only it's private and can only have a maximum of 4 occupants. You draw on your own individual layers, but share the same canvas with others, so you can see everyone drawing. Found a tutorial on how to set that up here .
Can I use this tutorial for [insert program here] ?
You can, but obviously you might have to tweak a few things since programs are different, but I don't see why you can't copy a technique from opencanvas to use for photoshop or whatever, so try it.
How do I blend?
Assuming you are using a tablet, pretend it is like pencil and paper. The harder you press, the darker the pencil mark; the lighter you press, the lighter the pencil mark. Apply this to your tablet and mess around with it.
Check this youtube video that I made about how to blend/shade. Hopefully it will help: [link]
I'm still having problems with pressure sensitivity.
See that white box in the brushes window? Make sure that line is dragged more toward the bottom right corner.
Also, check out the brush settings- the minimum and general sizes. Examples here: [link]

Is it possible to enable pressure sensitivity affecting the shape of the stroke, so it tapers? At the moment I can only get it to change the opacity with pressure, but it still has a uniform size

pichu4850 In reply to pittens [2009-12-06 18:49:27 +0000 UTC]
Yes, there is. See the white box with the black line in it in the right bottom corner of the brushes window? If you drag that line down to the right bottom corner, you will achieve a more pressure sensitive brush stroke. In contrast, if you pull the line more toward the top left, the less pressure sensitivity you will get.
Note that this doesn't work for the eraser brush (and I think blur too) but it works for the pencil and watercolor.
Does that help?

Ah, would my problem have anything to do with having only 1 black line in the box when my examples seem to mostly have 2?
Heh my comfort zone is photoshop, I'm getting better with this program but still a bit green :3

(: i'm glad you're still attempting to get used to this program, then, good for you : D
hmmm.. if you mean by the examples in my tutorial having two lines in those block boxes.... pay no attention the the second lines because I messed up while copy and pasting the images so it just looks like they are two lines.... I Think Ill fix that.
This might also be affecting your situation, though I'm not sure: [link]
check that out; see the small differences in the brush size bars, in the top row and the bottom row? THe top row is called the minimum brush size and the bottom row is the general brush size. The greater the difference between them, the more pressure sensitivity you should be able to get. (this can bettwe judged by looking at the brush preview window, where the brush size is indicated by a grey circle while the minimum brush size is in black).
COmpare the top three examples with the very bottom one: that one has a huuuge minimum brush size, which doesn't allow for much variation in the brush size, no matter how hard or lightly you press.
Maybe that will help?

Ah! It is working for watercolour, but the pen still only varies in opacity, both with the lines pulled down to 6 :/ The pen does vary i think, but only between two-ish-looking sizes and I can only tell when the transparency is disabled. Very strange.

Great tutorial! I have a question, though.
What is around the typical canvas size that you sketch stuff with? I'm having trouble finding a sketch size to shrink down nicely.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pichu4850 In reply to Chassady [2009-07-26 16:06:14 +0000 UTC]
Thank you
Hmm, I usually start out with something around 900 by 900px for sketching stuff so it's a decent, large size. Hmm, if you do that draw-huge-shrink-later method to like get details and smoothness more accurately, maybe you could go around 5000 or so (I'm not sure what the pixel limit is on opencanvas). and then to shrink it, photoshop will do nicely and paint occasionally does the trick.
Annoyingly enough, opencanvas 1.1 (at least) doesn't let you adjust the canvas size XD So if you need more or less space, just copy the image onto a new canvas accordingly (just make sure you don't chop off any of your sketch hahaha). D
Does that help?

Omg. You're my hero. I just downloaded the program ealier this week and I pretty much have a good feel to it already since I tend to just play around and teach myself. This was really REALLY helpful and now I figured out the other tools and such I didn't have a clue about. I totally agree with you on how awesome Open Canvas is. It may not have all the bells and whistles like Photoshop (sadly) but if you know how to use it right, you can come up with some amazing work.
Thank you very much for whipping up this tutorial. It was a HUGE help!

Is opencanvas better at doing art than gimp? cause I'm thinking of dowloading it when I want to draw stuff and gimp for photomanips.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pichu4850 In reply to felixneko7 [2009-06-22 18:07:11 +0000 UTC]
Well, I personally prefer opencanvas but I will use Gimp to edit photos and colors sometimes, since it has more technical abilities than opencanvas 1.1, so I think you might like it, but it's always worth trying it out. This version on this tutorial is a VERY basic version, and so you'll find that with the more up-to-date versions come tools that are more similar to Gimp.

I'm glad you think so, thank you very much
It's great! The eyes are beautiful, and a beautiful color (and I don't think you 'shaded' wrong at all)
How to blend is something I get many comments on, I tried to explain through a youtube video (it's linking in the questions in the description somewhere) maybe you could try looking at that? And if you did that, too, already, well... blending is one of the things where it's easier than you think it is but like everything, it's best learned by yourself with experimentation

Very useful! This deserves a Daily Deviation..
I have a question tho: On the color pallet, the boxes with the basic colors... My OC is all grey and black instead.. Is there a way to make it more colorful?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pichu4850 In reply to hiroshichansama [2009-06-13 14:57:55 +0000 UTC]
aww thanks
Hmm how to make it more colorful... You don't always need to use a completely neutral grey, you can always add some color to it by making it slightly blue, slightly red, slightly purple... And for shading, do the same thing; don't make it black, just make it a very dark purple or red, etc. In vivid lighting, reflect off your character with the color of those lights (like if there's a sunset, add the yellows oranges and other colors you see on your character). Those are my only suggestions, I usually don't use just grey and black XD

Oh, another question.
After I've saved an art in JPEG, the quality turns kinda weird, like there's some distortion in it.
I tried saving in other image files too, but there's still that color distortion there.
Help?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
pichu4850 In reply to hiroshichansama [2009-10-10 18:04:45 +0000 UTC]
Opencanvas 1.1 doesn't save the quality in .jpeg like it does in photoshop... so I never recommend saving it as that in OC I've never heard of the problem of colors distorting in .bmp or .wpb if saved directly on opencanvas 1.1?
If you copy the image onto like, paint or something, usually the best file to save as is .png or .bmp.

hiroshichansama In reply to pichu4850 [2009-10-11 06:11:37 +0000 UTC]
oh.. so i might as well try saving it in .bmp or .wpb then? then again, devaintart does accept .bmp right, cause i think .wpb is OC format..
