Description Sorry that is a HUUUGE file. You can download it, too.
If you are having any problems or have a question, tell me! I can try to help.

REMEMBER: This is NOT the only way to do things on opencanvas, it's merely the basics of what I do. THERE IS NO CORRECT WAY TO DO ANYTHING.

DO check out other tutorials people have made, they are seriously amazing and superior compared to the likes of this here tutorial. DO come up with your own techniques to make your art scream your name all over it. DO experiment with the tools.

Some Questionsfor your convenience and mine lol

Is Opencanvas 1.1 available for Apple computers/Mac?
Not that I know of, unfortunately. You can try the newer versions of OC, though.
Do I have to pay for Opencanvas 1.1? Is it a trial?
No; this version of opencanvas is completely free. No; you can download this program and have it forever on your computer unless you uninstall it.
How come everything is written in weird symbols?
It should appear as Japanese if you have the language pack installed on your computer or something. To switch to english, go to the top of the taskbar, go to the very last drop down list (H) and at the bottom it will say English (E).
How can I add a background without the colors getting all weird/dark?
I think I mentioned that somewhere here, maybe not. Since the layer is autoamtically set to multiply, you'll either have to put the background on a new layer and ERASE parts of the background where it OVERLAPS the coloring on your other layer, OR you can just do the background on the same layer as all your other coloring.
What is OCing/networking, and how do I do that?
Networking on Opencanvas 1.1 is a bit like paintchat, only it's private and can only have a maximum of 4 occupants. You draw on your own individual layers, but share the same canvas with others, so you can see everyone drawing. Found a tutorial on how to set that up here .
Can I use this tutorial for [insert program here] ?
You can, but obviously you might have to tweak a few things since programs are different, but I don't see why you can't copy a technique from opencanvas to use for photoshop or whatever, so try it.
How do I blend?
Assuming you are using a tablet, pretend it is like pencil and paper. The harder you press, the darker the pencil mark; the lighter you press, the lighter the pencil mark. Apply this to your tablet and mess around with it.

Check this youtube video that I made about how to blend/shade. Hopefully it will help: [link]

I'm still having problems with pressure sensitivity.
See that white box in the brushes window? Make sure that line is dragged more toward the bottom right corner.

Also, check out the brush settings- the minimum and general sizes. Examples here: [link]

Haaii~ I know it's been awhile since you posted this, but I was wondering what tool you use to highlight. I really like the dodge tool, though it only highlights the color underneath, therefore you can't really highlight with some other random color. (I'm talking about eyes.) Haha. There's a lot of information on this tutorial, so it might have said and I didn't catch it. But most tutorials just say: HIGHLIGHT. Just throw some highlights in there. And I'm like.. how? Haha. So if you could tell me, that'd be greaat~! <3

pichu4850 In reply to Via-Panda [2009-04-15 15:06:29 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I update this beast all the time and I'm always getting comments/favs on it so it's good to know people still look at it frequently.

Ahh, well the thing I like about opencanvas 1.1 is that there are no dodge OR burn tools! 8D You have to do everything by yourself, because life doesn't always have shortcuts. xD But srsly, I suggest you try to get out of the dodge and burn habit. It's result may be appealing and the process easy, but it's much better if you learn these things on your own

To do highlights, you just pick a color that's a little lighter than the color, and you keep adding lighter tones until you're happy with it. It's really quite simple :U

wohoo finely a good tutorial!!

but can you give me some tips for sketching on open canvas :/? if you look at the drawings i made with open canvas you'll see i sucks T_T

pichu4850 In reply to Aiko-Konomichi [2009-04-06 19:27:11 +0000 UTC]

THank you (:

Hmm well, what I suggest is just using a color that is light but dark enough so that you can still see it... sketch very loosely at first and then get into details with a slightly darker color.

I made a video recording me drawing a picture, and in the beginning there's a couple minutes of sketching: [link]

agh another open cnvas tutorial that just says"blend" this really doesnt help me since i am a moron who is crap at oc

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pichu4850 In reply to weenylem [2009-02-05 00:35:18 +0000 UTC]

Well the best way to learn, from my point of view, is actually just experimenting with the program itself and not listening to tutorials, but it doesn't meant tutorials can't be there to help.

Blending is simply something I cannot instruct one to do unless they fool around with the program themselves; you won't get hurt if you try it And if you're thinking "well I don't know how to blend so how can I possibly try it" you have to just pick a tool and scribble around on the canvas and toy around with the settings.

There's a small section underneath the shading of the skin segment to try to illustrate blending. In my description, I also wrote this:

"How do I blend?

I guess my little blending explanation wasn't very clear or detailed up there. Assuming you are using a tablet, pretend it is like pencil and paper. The harder you press, the darker the pencil mark; the lighter you press, the lighter the pencil mark. Apply this to your tablet and mess around with it."

no problem, and the more you experiment, the more you'll know, with everything.

if you have trouble trying to come up with certain hairstyles or clothing, and sometimes poses even, magazines are a good place to start looking at.

very nice tuto^^
un, i would like to make some question.

What do you use to color the skin?watercolor or pen/pencil?
Do you do the shading on only one level?
i don't really understand how to shading. you put a color in the middle and then start coloring on the other two?
Do you know some short cut with the keytable?like make bigger or smaller the brush without use the controls
how do you create the pinkish/reddish cheeks that you can see on some pic? is it still opencanvas?
to the background problem.
if you put the background in standard, the lineart-layer on multiply and the color-layer on standard. it should be ok, without coloring on the background (so if in the end you would like to change it, you can). this is if you color on only one layer.
if you used more, you only have to add a color-layer on multiply over the color-layer on standard.

sorry, if i annoyed you. ciau

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pichu4850 In reply to Rasne [2009-01-14 16:48:16 +0000 UTC]

thank you and no problem, I encourage asking questions. I'm not annoyed

What do you use to color the skin?watercolor or pen/pencil?
For this tutorial and most of my drawings, I use the pen/pencil tool only. I hardly ever use watercolor.

Do you do the shading on only one level?
Yes.

i don't really understand how to shading. you put a color in the middle and then start coloring on the other two?
Well, the way I shade is this: Put one color (example: light skin color) and then on the SAME layer, put down another (example: dark skin color, for shading) and then you blend them together. I can't really explain it more simply than that

Do you know some short cut with the keytable?
To make the brush smaller or bigger, I don't know how to do that using keyboard short cuts... maybe the other tutorials I have linked in the description will help. Pen pressure will also make different sizes sometimes.

i hope this helps :3

for tht what tool would you recomend to blend tht

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pichu4850 In reply to nomonaxnaruto [2009-04-01 21:27:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, for blending, You can use any tool, really, but I recommend something with a low opacity. (You can adjust opacity settings in the brush box)

Here, since you're like the 29084293rd person to ask me about this I thought I'd make a video, so maybe a visual will help instead [link]

No problem I'm glad it helped.

And.... Skin tones in normal lighting can mostly be found in the reds to yellows. YOu can go to google.com and type in "skin tones" and look at the images to get some examples of skin tones found in real life. (In pictures, skin tones are usually brightened to be more appealing.)

What do you save the finished picture as (etc. jpg)??

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

pichu4850 In reply to ma-yonaka14 [2009-01-05 23:59:22 +0000 UTC]

My recommendation would be to save, in opencanvas 1.1, as the regular .wpb file. .jpg makes the quality bad and does not save layers. .bmp makes the quality look fine, but you also lose the option of having separate layers.

By saving as a .wpb, you will save your separate layers AND the quality; so just copy the image (ctrl+c) onto a different image editing program, such as Paint or photoshop if you have it, and save how you'd normally save other pictures. ( .png is often the best option )
