EDIT 10/02/15: If you're doing inktober I strongly recommend you to take a look at this tutorial! I've been getting a ton of questions that can be answered here c:Β
EDIT 10/05/2015: Fehnryr suggested an amazing site for editing your traditional art pics if you want an alternative from photoshop & softwares. Use www.ribbet.com/ Β to raise contrasts, make colors pop and make your pics as great as the real life drawings! Thank you Fehryr for the suggestion!!
EDIT 10/04/2016: It's that time of the year again! how are your inktobers going?

Thank you for sharing and going into such detail about your process! It's always interesting to see how other people ink
Sorry if you answered this before somewhere, but are you using liners? Like Copic liners or Sakura Microns? Or do you use nibs?
Oh, also, what kind of font did you use in the heading parts in your tutorial? I really like it.

You can read it at the top of the tutorial - he uses staedtler liners, but sakuras or unipins work the same

Whelp! Thanks for this. I'm not a pro at linearts with pen...especially since lining pens aren't really cheap here.

I was wondering, how do you figure out where to put the weight in the lines? I always have a hard time doing that so I usually make all my pictures with the same line thickness when I draw. Any tips?

Picolo-kun In reply to Vince-san13 [2015-07-23 04:57:07 +0000 UTC]
It doesn't have a "rule" to where you should apply weight, it really depends on the kind of line you're doing
You can either start lightly and apply pressure or the opposite, the variation is the most important thing!

Thanks for the toturial.
How do you know which lines have to be thicker for variation?
(Except for the foreground)

Picolo-kun In reply to KuroOiseau [2015-07-23 04:59:10 +0000 UTC]
hmm, if there's for example one single character in your drawing. The outlines should be slightly thicker than detail such as cloth folds/details. You don't need a lot of thickness variation to create an interesting lineart, so even a slight variation helps Β

hi there i was wondering whatcing your draw , do you use a specific pen to fill the big black space or do you just have great patience? (in the meaning that in my draw you can almost see when when the pen is added on ink ... and often there are blank space . )
by the way this tutorial is really nice and usefull , thanks
p.s. your draws are majestic Β ^^
p.p.s. sorry about englishΒ

This is a great tutorial that really covers the basics, I think to myself some of this may be common sense, but I do tend to forget to add variation to my drawings when I ink them...
It really helped me out, thank you for taking the time to make something like this!

Great tutorial! But for when you fill in large areas just with black for shading, do you still use regular inking pens, or some kind of a marker to do it faster?
π: 0 β©: 1
Picolo-kun In reply to paintmemagic [2015-07-23 05:01:52 +0000 UTC]
If it's big and it doesn't require detail (such as the stars in that owl doodle) then you can use either posca or sharpie markers to fill the blacks, it will save you some ink

I recently started photographing and editing my art with my phone because I need a new computer, and I found that the best place to take a picture is midday, either when it's cloudy or with the sheer drawn so it's not direct light. I am loving the results! This is a lovely tutorial, and while I have no issues with inking, myself, it was very informative, and should aid those who need a little help getting everything just right.
