One could argue just as easily that if the Israeli government would cease their illegal occupation of the west bank then there might actually be a conversation to be had. I think both groups are ridiculous. Their pathetic ancient superstition has them all putting themselves as well as their children in harms way, all because they believe some creator deity has chosen their particular [race of?] people to occupy that itty bitty piece of dirt.Β

And personally, I think only a fool with delusions of grandeur believes peace can ever be achieved in a world chock to the fucking brim with humans who are nothing more than upright walking apes with the capacity to think abstractly. Thus, religion.Β

From your comment it's a pretty safe bet that you're an atheist. Here's the thing, Islam divides the world up into 2 zones, the Dar al Islam (abode of Islam) and the Dar al Harb (abode of war). They are called to make perpetual war on all unbelievers, and they view non-Muslim women as war booty. Once they take over an area they like to destroy buildings of religious and cultural significance to the native people, and replace them with mosques. One example is the mosque of Cordoba (Spain). Left wing college professors often will bitch about how the Spanish turned the mosque into a church and spliced Gothic style architecture into the mosque (which was a horrible mismatch), but the fact is, the mosque was originally built over a church which was leveled by the Muslims when they invaded. In India they built a mosque over the birth place of Prince Ram (one of the holiest sites for Hindus), and in Israel they built a mosque over the Temple platform (the holiest site for Jews and Christians).

Also, being an atheist doesn't make you safe. Atheists are also killed and raped in Islamic countries, and atheist children are forced to attend Islamic schools and memorize Koran verses.

As for Israel, it's not just an "itty bitty piece of dirt." It's the Jewish homeland, and homelands are often important to people for nationalistic reasons as a major part of their cultural identity stems from there. Jews have been in that land for thousands of years. They were there before the US even existed, before England existed, and before the Roman Empire existed. They are a very old civilization, and that's their land. Even if you take God out of the equation, they still have the best claim to that land. The fact is, after WWII they realized that having their own country (again) was the best way that they could survive, and the most logical place to have their own country was their homeland, which still had a large Jewish presence at the time. It's not their fault if the Muslims don't accept it. It's their (the Jews) land, and they have a right to keep it and defend themselves. They aren't the ones trying to take over the whole world through terror and forced conversion.

I'm not going to lie and say that I don't support Israel for any religious reasons, but the fact is, even if I were an atheist I would still chose to side with Israel over their neighbors. Israel is the only real friend the US has in the Middle East, and it's the only country that respects basic human freedom. The Jews aren't likely to kidnap me or throw acid on my wife. They aren't likely to crash airplanes into our buildings or blow up a school bus that my kids are on. I mean, there is a huge vast difference between them and their enemies, and anyone who doesn't recognize that is either incredibly datablind or an anti-semite.

Are you really that foolish/ignorant? Obviously you have no idea what traditional women's costume was in that part of the world during the 1st century. Public education in Brazil must be even more abysmal than it is in the US. What I'm wearing is the traditional male attire of Morocco. I bought it from a local merchant when I was in Tangier. Some examples: ohanlon.photoshelter.com/image…
www.transitionsabroad.com/publ…

I have been to four other countries: Spain, Morocco, India, and UAE (although for that last one I never stepped out of the airport). Under normal circumstances what I am wearing should indicate that I am well traveled. I don't mind answering your questions, but at the end of the day only you can help it whether or not you are going to remain ignorant.

Should I take you seriously? I mean, you are so over the top that it's hard to believe you are serious, vs. a troll just trying to make atheists look bad on purpose.

Assuming you're a troll, you need to stop. It's immature, and it's not helping anyone on either side of the issue.

Assuming your not, I don't think you are someone who would respond to God even if he did show up in person. If he shows up in the past you would call it a myth, if he showed up today you would call it a hoax, if he appeared before you directly you would attribute it to mental insanity. In fact the Bible mentions him showing himself in person on multiple occasions, and there are people today who claim to have seen him in visions and what not. Including my wife.

As for my physical appearance, I don't see what that has to do with anything. Put up your own picture and we'll compare. For the record I'm not Jewish, and I'm not going to let you lure me into a discussion about which groups and races are more physically attractive because it's subjective.

However your analogy has a little flaw. Based on scale, the humans who died were yet more insignificant. The stars do not judge us, the void does not stare back. Only human decisions have meaning in this universe, and humanity has decided that Israel matters.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pitnerd In reply to willcraft [2013-09-23 19:27:31 +0000 UTC]

But the logical fallacy here is yours in claiming that "Only human decisions have meaning in this universe..."; a declarative statement.

willcraft In reply to pitnerd [2013-09-23 22:52:22 +0000 UTC]

Is there anything else you believe to have meaning? Also, declarative statement just means a sentence asserting that a proposition is or is not true. This is not inherently fallacious.

Neat. You've made a neat case so far for defending the fact that people die innocently all the time over what they believe to be divine dirt. You've used deep logic to workout some how that I'm wrong for thinking they are ridiculous for fighting over it in the context of the universe. What's your fucking point? Do you have a fucking point? Get to your fucking point please or stop fucking commenting.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

willcraft In reply to pitnerd [2013-09-24 22:07:58 +0000 UTC]

My point is that the majority of the universe is irrelevant to most humans because by the time we reach it, we would have evolved into something unrecognizable (unless we make some incredible technological leap in the near future) and thus while the virgo supercluster has a greater magnitude, its relevance is less, as humans appear to be the most important things in the universe. Which is worth more, a bar of gold in your hand or a mountain of gold at the bottom of an inaccessible pit, which nobody will ever reach?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

pitnerd In reply to willcraft [2013-09-24 22:57:05 +0000 UTC]

Yep. I understand your line of reasoning. I agree that the majority of the observable universe is irrelevant to this planet's plight. I have a family. A wife and a child. They are what define purpose and meaning for me. I understand that ancient blood feuds, border disputes, and religious dogma are important to others and give them meaning as well. But I personally feel (me. my opinion.) we as a relatively advanced society living in the 21st century can say to other cultures sharing the planet, with respect to our cultural and social differences, that their culture is objectively wrong where it propagates any kind of slavery, murders the innocent deemed unworthy by their belief system, and/or treats women as lower class citizens at best, and mere property for a man to own at worst.

My question for you now that you've made your point, "My point is that the majority of the universe is irrelevantΒ to most humans..." is do you have another point that could bring light to anything that could justify murder over territory dispute in the name of politics, power, and religion?

History is written by the victors. Whichever side triumphs is immortalized as paragons of virtue, whereas those who fall shall be simply another addition to history's list of bogeymen. Remember, in the tale of David and Goliath, nobody ever heard Goliath's perspective

pitnerd In reply to willcraft [2013-09-24 23:14:28 +0000 UTC]

You write very beautifully. Clearly you are good at your craft. But I still don't understand if you think there's any kind of justification for the madness that has ensued for thousands of years, oceans of blood spilled, innocent and guilty alike, and the underlying 21st century fear that one of these religious zealots will get their hands on a nuclear weapon so as to detonate it in the holy land only to start another world war.Β

I think I'm understanding at least one of your points is that their are two sides to every story. Agreed. Now, do you think anything could ever justify the ongoing killing of human beings? Or is their just no hope that one could ever point at a culture that enslaves and murders others and say with confidence that they are objectively wrong for doing so?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

willcraft In reply to pitnerd [2013-09-24 23:26:49 +0000 UTC]

Β Β Β Β Β  What the civilizations in this area are doing is regrettable, but it is done by their own will. The people of the region have chosen to engage in war of their own consent, thus they have justified their own death. It is a tragedy when a mountaineer or a skydiver is killed, but nobody calls it an injustice. If no unwilling civilians were being slain, I would find nothing at all objectionable.

Β Β Β Β Β Β  Consent of the individual is the only moral standard which is relevant as human choice is the only known phenomenon in the universe capable of generating meaning.

Incidentally, thank you for your comments upon my writing style.

"Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity – in all this vastness – there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves."
