Or politics. That works too. Just, leading masses is a hazardous job.
Just for using "good" and "bad", that statement is flawed. Who can tell who's good and who's bad? At least religions have the humility to leave that to a superior judgment. So that Steven Weinberg is doing exactly the same thing and the difference with a religion is that he's mostly harmless. Not because he's right but because he doesnt have the power

And that is one of the sad truths of religious fanatism.

Anti-religious bullshit!
Religion influenced humanity in what it is today, it build up the western democratic secular world and now is helping people than hurting them don't blame all religions for the mistakes of a few extremists. Atheistic communists killed more people last century than religious fundamentalism and religious wars and persecutions in 2000 years.Β

I think before a talk, so don't act like you are morally superior because you are not religious

I don't think I did, and definitely don't claim to be. Your assumptions fall on hollow ground. What else? Thanks for commenting!

Many certainly do. My own family in fact. I always like to point out that good intentions led to the splitting of the atom which led to millions of people's lives being snuffed out in an instant; twice.

That didn't have to happen ... it was because we are so easily scared.
But it it also possible that more lives would have been lost in the end if the war had kept on going ...

What was the field of nuclear physics originally created for?Β The earliest history I know is that the Axis and the Allies and the Soviets were each trying to build the bomb before each other.

The good intention I speak of is Einstein discovering the equation of the conversion of matter into energy and energy into matter, e=mcΒ². It's intentions were purely discovery and satiating curiosity about the way the universe works. Unfortunately, the theory of relativity led nearly directly to the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

It was not Einstein that used the bomb though, he did no evil there, no?

pitnerd In reply to MasterZeroFlash [2014-10-20 21:54:35 +0000 UTC]
Certainly not from my perspective. I don't hold Einstein accountable for the deaths of all those that died in an atomic bomb blast. But without his work they most likely would not have been killed by that bomb. Actions have consequences, for better or worse.

So the caveman who made the first knife is responsible for all murders by knife that ever happened after that then?

pitnerd In reply to MasterZeroFlash [2014-10-21 13:48:07 +0000 UTC]
Again, NO, I personally don't see it that way as I apparently did not make clear enough in the response to the first comment. But there is this thing called cause and effect. Determinism. Causation. I specifically said I would NOT hold Einstein accountable for the deaths at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I would NOT do that. I DO NOT hold cavemen creating the first knives responsible for all the deaths caused by blades. I DO NOT do that.

You apperantly did not make it clear enough indeed. Good that you cleared it up though, so to say...
