Description
Part two of my Open Canvas tutorial set! This one approaches the idea of painting in Open Canvas 1.1 using the Watercolour brushes. It's an approach at painting designed for people who have begun with comic-style art - which goes from pencils to inks to colours - and how to adapt the way you work to produce paintings.Part One (Getting Started in Open Canvas 1.1) is located here: [link]
It covers the very basics of Open Canvas 1.1, and is designed for noobs to the program and people who don't know all the tools yet and want to learn more.
And if you'd like to see the .wpe of the image made for this Tutorial, I made a screencap of it, and it's located on youtube, here: [link]
The music and quality are rather shoddy I'm afraid - but you can at least see the process of me going from sketch to painting (and how LONG it takes me to get that sketch right, too!) XD
And if you'd like to see the painting used as an example for this tutorial, it's located here: [link]
As it appears at the end of this tutorial.
Enjoy. I hope some people find this useful.
[EDIT]
I was going to continue making these tutorials - and look at things like backgrounds, and using multiple layers, avoiding overlap, using subtract and add layers, etc etc... but basically, I can't!
HOWEVER. If anyone wants or needs any Open Canvas 1.1 tips, hints, or advice - just contact me! I am always happy to help, and I do know this program inside out. If I can't give you advice via note, we can always meet up in a paintchat and I'll show you what I mean.
Take care all! Apologies for the lack of further tutorials. I hope you all understand!

I do have a tablet, yes.
It is possible to draw in Open Canvas - and in any digital program - with a mouse, and I've known a few artists who were very good at it. It is, however, *much* trickier. Apart from a much greater lack of control, you also lack the pressure sensitivity that you get with a tablet. (Ie, the harder you press, the darker/thicker line you get.)
By all means play with it with a mouse! But you might find a tablet a good investment for the future.

Thanks! I was worried, because I've really wanted to draw using a program like Open Canvas but I thought I never could without one. Thanks again!

Thanks for this, I'm thinking of downloading Open Canvas again to play around with it as I had back when I was a little newb child on here and would like to try out painting like this.

Very nice! Corel Painter is probably my one true love, but for quick sketching on my slow little laptop, it kills! I'm hoping OC helps fix that. Thanks so much for the tut!

This right here is an absolute lifesaver!
Someone got me using OpenCanvas then, conveinently, couldn't explain how to use it. Both parts were very helpful, thanks so much for this.

Just to tell you the way to get lineart out of OC without having to print screen is to push control A then control c and control v when you get to photoshop. Much easier then the other way.

awesome tutorial man i never knew you could do these things on OC and, i've been using OC for three years now, (then again i dont have the talent to draw as good as you even if i knew all these things)
do you use a tablet? i only use my mouse to draw and i find it difficult to draw curves using the pen/pencil tool so i tend to use the line tool in my drawings which makes my lines very angular. anyways this is really helpful, especially for idiots like me, hope you make more of these!

pixieface In reply to abnormalchild [2009-02-12 14:16:16 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I do use a tablet. I have an wacom intuos I picked up years and years ago, and while it was a bit expensive initially, I've had no problems with it at all... it's lasted about five or six years I think, so far! So I think it was a good investment! That said, I know of several artists who draw with a mouse and really produce some amazing stuff! So I don't think a tablet is essential at all.
I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial! I dunno if I'll be making any more... maybe some day. These days I tend to use Corel Painter more than Open Canvas (though I do use both). And I'm not sure what else I'd have to say in a tutorial anyway! But I'm very happy to hear this was useful to you. Have fun!

I believe so! Google is your friend in that regard. I couldn't tell you of a site, but I know I found OC 1.1 recently through Google (last couple of months) so I could download it to my laptop.

I remember seeing this a while ago, but I never had a use for it. Now that I have OpenCanvas, I'm more apt to actually put this to good use! At the moment (like - it's open right now, ready to go) I'm working on a piece that I envisioned before going to bed last night, and I think I'd be lost without this and the previous tutorial.
You're the best!

You can find loads of information about networking and paintchatting with Open Canvas here: [link]
~OpenCanvasJammers is a community of people who like to network and paintchat in OC, and are always happy to meet new people! They also have their own chatroom here on DA, where they'll be happy to offer you any help you might need when it comes to networking.

Well, what do you want to know? I'm not making OC 1.1 tutorials any more (these days I work mainly in Corel Painter), but I'm sure I can answer any questions you might have!
I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial!

Yes, I love it.
I don't have photoshop or any of those fancy programs. I have PSP7 but it's buggy and difficult to deal with sometimes, so I consider Open Canvas a blessing.
