Description
About the MOCAkrida is Greek for Grasshopper (Spelled ακρίδα and pronounced Akrilla). I went with Greek because in ancient Greece the Grasshopper was a sign of nobility and wisdom. In Chinese culture the grasshopper is seen as an omen of fertility and good luck, especially in having a son, which is highly valued in Chinese families. Though I liked the Greek name more so Akrida it is.
The inspiration for Akrida came over time. After dismantling Relik I had the idea to build a Steampunk themed frog with a rider. After considering that several MOCers have made frogs before, like welcometothedarksyde 's Wrebbit , I thought on what else I could make that would fit the concept and I thought of a grasshopper. Then I looked up "Bionicle Grasshopper" and more generically "bionicle insect" on various places and found that no one had built a grasshopper yet(at least that I found), so that settled it for me. I'm still debating on whether or not I want to make a rider for this thing. Its wasn't exactly built with having a rider in mind. Though that's sort of how I would go about it, create animal->build saddle around animal, just like real life. If I do make a rider for it, I've already got some ideas on how to make the saddle so that it "fits" the Grasshopper mount. The rider itself is still a mystery to me.

Bio
canonical note
Biosector01 mentions a "Grasshopper-like" rahi that Takua fights in Ga-wahi. While no other mention of any Grasshopper creatures are mentioned, there is at least one canonical Grasshopper Rahi in the bionicle universe. The Wiki also refers to them as "cliff Bug" which I will say is what they're commonly referred to in the bionicle world by sentient being.
"Cliff Bugs as they're more commonly referred to are insect-like rahi that inhabit a few different territories within the Matoran Universe and Spherus Magna (post migration). They can be found in wet bioms like Ga-wahi, and the swamps of Le-wahi. They typically like moist well vegetated areas.
Akrida are a unique type of Cliff Bug in that they grow substantially larger than average cliff bugs. This makes them much more formidable in the wild and moves them higher up on the food chain. Akrida are favored amongst the Le-Matoran who like to make use of animal mounts where ever possible. Some Le-matoran prefer to ride Gukko birds , but some prefer Akrida for their ability to traverse land, while also being able to leap great distances to the point that it almost seems like they can fly as well. Smaller cliff bugs can fly, but due to their larger size, Akrida cannont. Because both rahi are kept in stables and captivity, they co-habitate quite peacefully and often times form bonds.
Being Herbivores, they don't attack other animals unless provoked. Though when they are, they make a loud hissing noise as a warning. They will bite with their large mandibles and attack with the spikes on the back of their legs. Neither of these are meant for attacking prey so they're not lethal per say, but can still cause injury or death in extreme situations. Average Cliff bugs are preyed on quite often by most other rahi in the wild. Akrida are still prone to being preyed on, but a lot less due to their relative size and ability to leap great distances. This keeps them alive most of the time. Only truly apex predators stand a chance of making Akridas a meal.

Wow thank you Dennis. Its been a while since I've gotten a critique on a MOC, and even longer since I got one from you. You've always given me good feedback. Thank you so much for this, it made my night.
I figured the spots could be the coloring difference between a male and female. Males would have grey ones and females yellow. So this is a girl Grasshopper. I also just didn't want to use grey ones and break up the color scheme. Its one of those rare instances where the story supports a build decision.
Those wings are from these sets .
Thanks Dennis, I'll try. Its been hard lately since starting work and trying to reconfigure my photography setup amidst work. My MOC room is in such a state of neglect I almost don't wanna go in there anymore. I need words of encouragement like this now more than ever.
BTW, you need to get off your Belgian butt and build and post some of your own MOCs. You're sitting on a lot of untapped potential. I know if you got serious about it, you could become an amazing MOCer. You're already a decent one.

Took me a while, but finally some free time! <3
Well, dear, well... What can I say? This has to be one of the most original, genious MOCs I have ever seen. Not too many people decide to build a grasshopper, but you did it... and in a enormous size! What's more, you worked with a quite interesting color scheme and decided to go with a more realistic look rather than ferocious or cute. I'm amazed by the shaping you gave the MOC using those curvy golden armor from various sets like Iruini and Takanuva, the part usage here is fantastic: the masks, the Kahgarak plate, even the Rhotuka shields at the end! The legs look great, love the longer ones with the Metru shins, and the face with the double jaw is gorgeous! This MOC is a creation you should be proud, since it's not only perfect for the sight but it has a wonderful use of parts and seems to have quite a lot of poseability. Marvelous, dear!
Also, glad to see you took advantage of the gaps on the official story to put Akrida on it! ;3

D'awwww Thanks Lianyu. I'm glad you really like it.
There's a few things I'm not overly happy with, like the mouth, and the feet, but considering Old gold doesn't have a whole lot of parts to it. I'm satisfied with what I was able to produce with what I had. If I used a different more accessible color, I probably would have done the feet differently. Oh well. Thanks again.

The mouth looks great in my opinion. And maybe changing the feet of the first legs to Avohkii would look better if that bothers you, but I think they look nice anyways.

I'm glad you like it that much. There's a few things I'd change if I could get the parts in different colors, But Old gold is hard to work with, so considering that aspect. I'm super happy with him. Its a Male Grasshopper cause of the Yellow bits.

Oh, I realy like this one
The face/head is near to perfect! The shape is good as well, I can't even see any visible gaps.
I think the back legs could be even longer.
Seeing those wing parts being used brings back memories xD
All those yellow ornamental techic parts are a nice highlight ^^

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Alex-Darkrai [2014-10-05 02:40:21 +0000 UTC]
Oh Thanks Alex.
Near, the mouth is off a bit. Its a bit too big and the mandibles face downward instead of out, and they have these things called palpes that are like little tiny face finger antennae things. I didn't put any of those on there cause I couldn't find a convincing articulate way to do that without massively cluttering up the face.
If you look at it from the side there's definitely some gaps. But hey its a Bionicle they all have gaps. Look at the movie versions of pretty much every character. They've got some fleshy bits and some gappy mechanical bits. That's the beautiful thing about Bionicle.
That was a summation of proportions. Grasshoppers all have various sized abdomens and wings and the legs always seemed proportionate to their abdomins. The thigh went about to the end of the abdomen so I summized the length. I used Google Images of Grasshoppers, but I focused on this guy more. So you tell me. You're the architect, You can measure and stuff. I used my fingers to kinda space the length and it seems the knee gos back to the end of the abdomin and the shin is about the length of the thigh.
Right? 90's era space sets.
Thanks That's to convey the gender dimorphism in Males. So this makes this a male Grasshopper.

Alex-Darkrai In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2014-10-09 13:48:34 +0000 UTC]
If you used that image as source material, could it be that the main body is too short? Like; the frontal body is good, but the back is too short?
Because on the picture the body looks proportionally longer and the legs are all connected to the first half of the body, while on your Akrida the look like they're all located on thefrontal 3/4 of the main body.
I'm not too sure about this, maybe it's only looks like this to me on the pictures.
I allways wanted to use some of those parts again! The have such individual shapes and color schemes. But ... most of mine are lost or damaged

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Alex-Darkrai [2014-10-09 17:26:42 +0000 UTC]
I mean I did use other images. The front legs are attached to the thorax, but the back legs do seem attached to the Abdomen. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVAVn9… Its hard to tell. From what I gathered the back legs start at the front of the abdomen and extend length wise all the way back.
Well overall I think what matters is getting the point across right? it looks like a grashopper, everyone can recognize it as one, and they come in so many different variations, its hard to nail just one. I agree that the legs might be back a bit. But I'm fine with that.
Oh that sucks. Mine are strewn about in my lego collection. I didn't have all that many of them.

And from a sea of Hero factory themed MOCs emerges a grasshopper made almost entirely of Bionicle parts. 'tis a refreshing sight indeed.
The colors are distributed very well, and the thorax implies a very solid creature, well done.
II'm not very familiar with common garden variety grasshopper anatomy, but I might have an idea for this build. I've seen a documentary about a species in Africa that has inward facing spines on it's legs so they can trap smaller insects by wrapping their legs around them, maybe you could flip the spines around and turn this thing into a war beast? just a thought. And you should definitely make a rider for this guy! even if it's just a little guy, it would really take this MOC to the next level.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to MainmangoII [2014-10-01 12:15:33 +0000 UTC]
I know right? It was really refreshing using all these old parts. I'm a little sad I had to resort to using Hero Factory parts on it at all, but there was just no way to articulate the neck in that confined space. HF is really good for compact articulation.
Thanks man. Glad to see a comment from you to, its been ages. The ironic thing is that thorax is actually pretty hollow and a little fragile.
Huh that's interesting. Can you provide a link to this particular species? When working on him I just used Google Images of Grasshoppers , and I sort of focused on this particular one the most.
I'll definitely consider the rider much more now. Thanks for the encouragement

Been gone, but i finally made something today.
Hollow thorax? not too fragile to support a rider I hope >.>
I can not, I tried browsing the internet for an article about it, but all I ended up finding were articles on species in arizona that will break it's own leg off to get away from predators. I guess I should have tried to find it before mentioning it.

That's cool. When you post it I'll see it.
Its kinda hollow. And that won't be too much of an issue. if I make the saddle it'll actually be elevated a bit. Like it'll strap and connect to the grasshopper but it'll be elevated off the grashopper so that it's wings can still move. It'll also give me a chance to put some shock absorbers in there to give it a cool springy look. After all if your mount is hopping around, you'd want some suspension to soften the ride.
Yeah probably. Oh well. I like my green regularish grasshoppers. They're cute and don't really bite.

Me neither. I don't really like bugs IRL, but this was one of those "I've never done... and no one else has ever done... so I'll do..." builds. I had only built insects on a small scale with
Tombo
Anansi
and the failed derp ant.
So I wanted to try making an insect on a larger scale. The fact that I couldn't find any examples of a Bionicle Grasshopper is what motivated me the most to make this particular bug.

Thanks Liam. I was tempted to try my "mechanical animal" rahi treatment and put wheels on its feet and give it lots of shock elements, but because I still feel like animals are my weakest area in MOCing subject matter, I went more for realism. I studied photos of Grasshoppers to try and get the anatomy as best I could with what I had. Old Gold isn't exactly an abundant color with lots of different parts.

Thanks Voxumo. Well lego used it on Iruni, old gold and dark green. So its something we're familiar with, plus I really wanted to use all the old gold I had reclaimed from all the MOCs I ever used it on, and dark green just felt like a very "grasshoppery" color to use. Grasshoppers come in all sorts of colors but Green is the most common and my selection of standard green is abysmal. Dark Green was and still sorta is abundant for me. So that process worked out naturally. Green's my favorite color and I think I'm more partial to Lego's dark green than standard or bright green since I also have an affinity of all things dark.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to voxumo [2014-10-01 14:13:40 +0000 UTC]
I like lime green to. Its a nice versatile color because it can be used inorganically on like cars, robots mechs and anything you wanna give a flashy paint job to *points to your icon* And it can be use organically to on lizards and other brightly colored creatures. Then it can be used in foliage as well when mixed with the other greens. its very versatile. I like using it.
To be honest. There's not really a color in lego I don't like. Some I don't use or even have at all. But colors are colors. Every color has a use, that's why lego makes it. Its too bad Bionicle and Constraction in general doesn't work more with the color palette Lego has. I could totally see a cyber punk HF guy using bright Pink and black. But I guess it comes down to gender roles and stuff like that. What 12 year old boy is going to want a pink and black Bionicle bad guy? Some would, but not enough to justify producing the parts I think.
