Description
Edit(2/15/2016).Soooo....Rodney got some updates. The main ones are:
- completely rebuilt the arms
- filled out the legs
- color blocked things a bit better
- improved the shoulders and other internal structure in the torso
- improved internal structure of the wheelchair
- made the wheel chair more of a cross between a wheel chair and a race car
- added a fifth wheel in the back to be more accurate to a real athletic wheelchair
About the MOC
Rodney was another "preplanned" MOC for me. I had the concept of a MOC in a wheel chair for a little while before actually building the MOC. However, the concept originally was somewhat different. He originally was going to have four arms, and a more beast like head with a mouth and teeth, his name was going to be "Kumpel" which has one meaning of "friend" or "buddy," and his color scheme was going to be blue, Violet , and black. After purchasing 8494-Ring Of Fire off ebay I simply had to use the parts with the stickers on them, which drastically changed the landscape of this MOC. I lost the four arms and beast-like head but was able to more heavily incorporate the racing influence I wanted him to have, as well as incorporating another concept I had for a while, which was having internal suspension within the MOC's body. I had conceptualized this as being either in the thighs, shins or torso. Seeing as how Rodney is a paraplegic, the torso was the only place this would work. It also made building his torso a lot easier.
Rodney is the third member to my "Liberated Robot Series ." You can also view the individual photos of Rodney, as well as all the other Liberated Robots HERE.
Bio(also updated)
Rodney Dieter was an athletic robot who participated in the robot racing league for years with great success. He won many races and almost seemed programmed to win. No matter what his competitor's tried Rodney and his owners always seemed to be a gigabyte ahead of the competition. That is however, until Rodney got into a terrible crash and was very badly damaged. The extent of the damage was devastating and would have required that Rodney be completely rebuilt. Instead of forgoing the cost to rebuild Rodney, his owners decided to scrap him download and rewrite his software into a new robot. The night before Rodney was scheduled for deletion and scrapped a mysterious gray robot showed up and rebooted him. With the help of another brightly colored robot that was traveling with the gray robot, they helped rebuild Rodney during the night while no humans were around. However, they didn't have the parts necessary to repair him completely and Rodney couldn't walk. They instead used parts from the garage next door to fashion him a makeshift wheel chair, a old device humans used when their lower extremities did not function properly. After fixing Rodney to a point of stability he explained to the other robots that he was going to be deleted and scrapped. When they heard this they immediately made Rodney part of the group and left the Garage.
For a while Rodney was another member of the group. He eventually became accustomed to both life as a fugitive robot, and life in a wheelchair. He even became quite good at maneuvering in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, his time with the group would be limited. One day the group was on the run and they came to a dead end. The other able bodied robots were able to scale the wall. While they were trying to help Rodney over he was hit with an EMP blast that knocked him unconscious. The other robots fell over the wall and were able to escape, but Rodney was apprehended and returned to his owners. Once back in the garage they rebooted him to analyze his new code. When they saw how well he was able to move within the wheelchair they instantly saw that Rodney would make a great spokesperson for disabled individuals. So they build him a new wheel chair gave him a new paint job, and started a new robotic sports league where they used old busted up robots. This gave Rodney an new lease on Life as well as helping other damaged athletic robots get a second chance to perform their functions and not become scrap. Now Rodney continues to play wheelchair sports and continues to help other robots become part of the Disabled Bots League. Meanwhile, the other group of bots that helped him escape his fate remain at large...

Ahh I just love how you would be able to make the wheelchair using lego pieces, especially on the wheels! It is the first BIONICLE MOC in a wheelchair to be very honest!

Ah okay. Thanks. I did see something that had power functions on youtube. But I think the bionicle figure was just a stock canister fig. And it was all very ugly. But yeah I think technically this would be the first Bionicle MOC in a wheelchair. Thanks Sapphire.

Thanks Greg. Yeah big improvement over the previous version. At least in the problem areas, which was his arms, and the stability of the wheelchair. It tipped over all the time. Now its nice and stable and more accurate to.

It will be some time before I get back in the swing of things I got a lot of stuff to do here, unpacking and address changing all over the place. haven't even unpacked the PS4 because I been so upset over the PS3 being taken, glad I took the 4 myself. Β I have 3 big boxes left to do.
the list of stuff gone is so large everything from some clothes, my new turtle beach wireless headphones, weapons, sheets, small appliances and stuff I will never get back because it was so old. Β I been so depressed. I just been sitting here watching TV shows and sleeping. Β I just din't want to find anymore damaged or missing items. Β

I'm sorry Greg. That really sucks. When I got kicked out and moved to Reno my family just boxed up all my shit as hastily and slopily as they could and a bunch of my stuff got kinda messed up. It was like "gee thanks for caring so much." My family did that. So I can kinda relate on a small level.
But in the end dude they are just things. You have the most important stuff. You're moved out, you've got your kitty, like always, You just gotta focus on the positive things. Thats how we get by in life. It'll get better You'll eventually replace some of what you lost and be able to get newer things. Think of it as an opportunity to fill a vacancy. You're like me, you're too stubborn to give in so tell life to go fuck itself and Start anew my friend. maybe make some artwork inspired by that feeling.

I've made a list of the stuff gone the stuff that got broken is secondary right now.
I keep on it will but most New Bedford police are disrespectful , lazy, lawbreaking thugs. Β Hell the guy that lived under me for 2 years was a Sargent in NB and he stole 100,000 from the police treasury Β to gamble it away and he got no time what so ever, he even got his pension and early retirement. Β He went over to Iraq and got paid a huge sum of money to be an adviser to their police department on top of it. Β I HATE Β that city and I hope I never have to go back.

Every city has a level of corruption it's just my old city is too dumb to care, hell the news paper there is at a 6 grade level in comparison the New York times is at 16th grade college lv.
It wasn't always this bad there the cops were respectable when I was younger and cared. now they get paid the highest in the state and average of $100,000+ a year and just want the money or power or both. Β You cal them for a crime and get the third degree like you've done something wrong.
I live in a town now not a city and its older than NB and much bigger but less people I like it here.Β

Thank you. Its technically not the first. I found one on Youtube. It was remote controlled, but was lame. So mine isn't remote controlled, but not lame. That's often how my MOCs go. Not the first to do a thing, but typically the one to do it better. "You do it first, I do it better" is one of my sayings.

Rodney as a character is quite unique, and the backstory was in depth enough to where if I chose and I did once I could visualize a whole movie about him.
The wheelchair is obviously a crucial part to this guy. As soon as I saw how the wheels themselves were positioned on that particularly shaped chair I visualized a sports-car, resembling a cross between a Porsche and Ferrari.
As for Rodney himself I love his upper and lower torso the most, and the certainly add to him appearing robotic.
The arms are a little iffy to me as the lower sections are quite thin and the upper portions are bulky and unusually long to say the least. That being said, I feel that if the arms were a little more even and were flushed out they'd be perfect.
I think the legs should be slightly more atrophied, as they don't look as terribly thin in scale as I've seen on some real people.
The hands are seriously bony and the fingers clash with his color scheme. *I do know however that you are working on rectifying that though.*
Like the torso I love the head and have no issues with it.
Overall l this is a great MOC that really has character to it.

Thanks Simeon.
Damn a whole movie? Was it good. did it make me millions?
The tilted wheels are done on athletic wheelchairs. I'm glad the sportiness translated though.
The arms are a bit long yes, but he's also a robot so I was okay with playing with the proportions a bit. That was also to make sure his arms could reach the wheels well and push forward.
Agreed, I've seen real people where the legs are damn near gone. I didn't want to overdo it though. I wasn't going for Joe Swanson, he's hyper proportions and I didn't want that.
Definitely, need to get my hands(haha get it?) on some straight blue or yellow bonkle arms. Evo and Surge from the new wave both have em. I'll have to bricklink em cause I'd need six and both sets
Thanks for your feedback Simeon.

Violate isn't a colour. It's a verb.
But anywho, he's cool. The colours are a bit eye-melting but other than that he's nice. The wheels are a little small for the chair, although the shape of the chair is nice and gives a very sporty feel.
You've really been churning out the MOCs lately. Good stuff.

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Shorjok [2013-05-28 23:08:18 +0000 UTC]
Oops. Typo. I fixed it.
You really don't like brightly colored MOCs do you? You said something similar about Wretched Stare to. The wheels were kinda difficult to pinpoint because different chairs had different sized wheels or the seat was higher or lower. Plus its all I got. I was worried they might be too small, or that for as wide as the chair is the wheels should be a bit bigger. I'm glad it looks sporty though, that was definitely the intention.
Have I? I hadn't noticed. I guess Premod Anansi and Rodney here were relatively close together. Thanks Tom.

Shorjok In reply to Plague-Doc-Matteo [2013-05-29 00:13:09 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't say brightly coloured...just garish colour schemes xD
Fair enough about wheel size, but from what I've seen wheelchairs (sporty ones included) have wheels larger and thinner than that. I know you wanted to use those wheels though, so I guess I would've just made the chair and the moc a little smaller.

I initially meant to but well when the figure comes out the way Rodney did, you don't say no, you just deal with it and hope to get bigger wheels later on.

Wow. Love this. That head, oh that head. The use of the Pakari both pleases me and angers me, as I was working out a way to do the same thing. .-. Oh well. LOVE the way it looks here. Really love the wheelchair and the handles on the wheels especially too. The use of the shocks in the torso are very nice and I applaud that idea. I did that once, and quite liked it, but gave up on it after that. I also really like how you made his body proportional to what a paraplegic person would be with the larger upper body and thinner legs. Really helps sell it. I am going to nitpick you here though, I don't like those lower arms I just don't. Not sure entirely why. I also really don't like those fingers, they look way too skinny and frail. Guess you can't win 'em all, aye? I really like the rest of this guy though. Nicely done

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Gale-OneOfMany [2013-05-28 16:10:52 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Gale. The fingers are a temporary solution, I didn't have any exo force/bionicle arms in the right colors to use as fingers so this is what he got.
The lower arms seem to be a personal thing I think cause everyone else liked it.
Were you able to pick up on the proportions just by looking or did you have to read other comments first?
