Description
Concept exploration for a (evil) changeling airshipI don't think it's very changeling-ish, instead looks like a turtle + angler fish... (fail). I should try studying more insects for this.

I dunno, I'd say this sort of look is exactly what I'd assign to changelings myself. Nothing fail about this.

given what I know of airships, and sailing ships, and the mechanics of how they work
I'd say this looks like a ghost-ship version of an airship
with the tattered gas-cell being very similar to the shredded sails of traditional ghost-ships in stories.
And while it may look more marine than insect, it looks perfect for evil and spooky.
the Green evil glow hinting at the large amounts of magic that would be needed to keep it air born
and the holes and shapes of the hull, clearly intended to look like the faces of some evil monster.
The design is very well done.

as for you wanting to make a second design that's more insect like
what about an airship, shaped like a dragonfly, or centipede
but large enough for 1 to 3 airships to dock on top of the gas-cell
and a long gondola underneath the main gas-cell
4 wings, a pair of wings at the front and back
6 wings, a pair of wings front back and middle
8 wings, 2 pairs at the front and back
or wings along the entire length. centipede style
fighters would be regular changelings
bombers would be large dragonflies that would carry a payload in their legs or long tail
and a pilot in front of the wings, and the bomber behind the wings.

That looks incredible. very nice. The colors and lights are just awesome. As far as the design, it almost reminds me of spriggans such as in the Elder Scrolls games, which is somewhat fitting since the changelings were born from a corrupted magic tree.
Side note since you mentioned them, apparently angler fish can be like 9 feet long, that's a nope. I'd rather encounter sharks...and here i thought they'd be maybe 1 or 2 feet long...

Not a bad start for the concept, I think. I rather like the haunted look to the whole thing.
Though now I'm imagining Chrysalis wanting to use this on some honeymoon with Twilight and the latter having to explain that conquest is *not* how she wanted to spend their time in the south.
