Description
Here's the last new character profile (for now) for Paper Mario: Double Darkness. My excuse this time for taking so long is the setting. I knew I wanted to do it in the Pit of 100 Trials, but I had never actually considered what the Pit would look like. What I decided was that each group of 10 floors would have a slightly different look, each based on one of the 10 worlds in the game in order. This is what the last ten floors look like.Anyway, I've been bragging for a while now that Darkblot as a character is SO much more awesome than he used to be. Well, sure: originally, he was a black circle with eyes who had no personality. That's not exactly hard to beat. Still, I think I did pretty well turning this guy into a reasonably memorable villain. A lot of this bio I already said in one of my other recent profiles, but whatever, that just means I don't have to write as much.
Darkblot first appeared in the Mushroom Frontier soon after the founding of the Nox Empire. At first, he wasn't planning to actually conquer the empire. He was, however, planning to steal a considerable amount of dark power for his own use, which led to a catastrophic energy shortage. Once the Nox elders figured out who was behind it, Darkblot was sealed in the Pit of 100 Trials, a ridiculously deep, ridiculously creepy tunnel which was originally built by prehistoric Shy Guys as a burial ground and was later fixed up by the Nox. With the power-pilfering sorcerer 100 floors underground, the Nox Empire quickly got back on its feet. Unfortunately, so did Darkblot. After draining the necrotic energy from some old Shy Guy bones, he recovered enough of his strength to slowly begin working his way back to the surface. This time, however, he wasn't just interested in pulling the dark energy out of stuff- it was a matter of revenge. He wanted the whole Nox Empire for himself.
When he made it back aboveground, he found the empire at its peak, and knew he was in for a challenge, but by then he had collected more than enough energy from the various monsters in the Pit to feel confident attacking. After he had done enough spying to figure out their weak spot, he infiltrated the Shadow Spire, the darkness-channeling tower that conducted the flow of energy through the whole empire . . . and disabled it. Despite this considerable disadvantage, the Nox, led by Specteira, managed to defeat their foe and dump him back into the Pit of 100 Trials (bad idea). However, they suffered heavy casualties and were left dangerously low on dark power. They probably would have recovered again, but the early Mushroom Kingdom took notice and, hoping to claim some precious extra land, sent Toad troops to the island. And that was the last of the Nox Empire.
Due to his weakened state, it took a good 5,000 years for Darkblot to escape the Pit for the second time (which brings us to the period in which the game is set). Having prepared extensively to take out the Nox for good this time, he's quite surprised to learn that they're already gone. After all this, though, he refuses to give up. His new plan is to first drain the energy of- drum roll, please- the stars in the sky, which will hopefully make him strong enough to wipe the Nox out without even trying. He collects these stars into handy little sacks called Star Bags. Next, he locates the remains of the Shadow Spire, recalling a portal-type machine inside that can distort the paper of spacetime (so to speak). He finds it, fires it up, and is about to travel 5,000 years into the past, when he is confronted by none other than Mario and is given a prompt jumping-on. At this point, Darkblot has had enough, and he is not about to have his plans ruined again. Desperate, he decides to go all or nothing on his invasion of the past by tearing the portal mechanism into 9 pieces just before he goes through. This is a huge problem for Mario, because not only does he still have the biggest Star Bag with him (the disappearance of the stars is the whole reason Mario got involved in this mess), but if he succeeds at conquering the Nox Empire in the past, it could alter the present beyond recognition.
In retrospect, that's actually not really so much a bio of Darkblot than a summary of the entire Prologue. But at least now you know who Darkblot is. Anyway, as always with characters you fight, I'm going to wrap this up with a tattle entry. The stats for this guy will look a bit low, but hey, he's only the first major boss in the game (Actually, you haven't met Specteira yet the first time you fight him, so you have to tattle him during a certain much later boss battle when Darkblot is possessing another character. I'm not going to give away who that is yet.)
DARKBLOT
Tattle Entry #142
That's Darkblot! He's the evil sorcerer that tried to take over the Nox Empire 5,000 years ago! What's worse, HE'S TRYING AGAIN! Some people just can't admit defeat very easily, I guess. Maximum HP is 40, Attack is 3, and Defense is 0. His main attack is hurling bolts of dark energy, but he can also drain your HP and FP to heal himself or gain various status effects. If you don't carry a lot of items, you'll be in trouble before long. No one knows very much about who he is or where he came from, really. He just appeared in the Nox Empire one day and started to steal dark energy from our reserves. We put him in the Pit of 100 trials for his offenses, and he's been seeking vengeance for that ever since. Still, what do you think he wanted that energy for to begin with? What was he trying to accomplish?...
Since you've probably all forgotten this by now (I mentioned it at the very beginning of this description), this is the last character profile I'll be making for now. Next up for Paper Mario: Double Darkness- revised chapter title pages! Stay tuned, everyone! Later!
