Description

It is finally finished.

It’s bittersweet really. It’s been a really long time since I had that “letting my yarn baby go” feeling. I’ve put so many hours into it, I have a hard time comprehending that it’s finished. I still remember the I Must Make This feeling when I saw the reference photos. It’s been a real privilege and it gave me an opportunity to flex my knitting muscles. I never would have had the chance otherwise.

Yarn is Bernat Super Value in Winter White.

Can I just say that I really love the top? Especiallythe way that the sleeves don't go all the way up, just stopping below the shoulder instead

Thank you!

I don't blame you for thinking that it's all one piece.  But they're straight up arm warmers and completely separate from the shell/vest (it's a costume piece).  They're just pinned there for display purposes.

Whoopsies, sorry! It's an amazing piece though, and I find that it's wonderful that they match

Sure!

If you are talking about the armholes, it's basically an armhole for a set-in sleeve.  Minus the actual sleeve of course.  I just put a single crochet border along the edge.

If you're talking about the arm warmers, they're basically done in three parts.  About 5 inches of a ribbing pattern, about 15 inches of the pattern with the cable, then about 3-5 inches of the ribbing pattern again...except the knits and purls are reversed.  So the K4 P1 K1 P1 K1 P1 pattern that you might have used at the beginning of the warmer will now be a P4 K1 P1 K1 P1 K1 pattern.

Start every piece with a provisional cast on so you be able to fold the cuffs in and sew them into place.  The finished cuff will be about 2-2.5 inches wide.  The tops of the warmers just fold over.

I made these pieces flat though obviously you can knit them in the round if you want to.  If you do make them flat you'll have to seam them eventually.  Seam as you normally would until you reach the final 3-5 inches.  Turn the piece inside out and seam them so that the sewn edge would be on the opposite side.  That way when you turn the top of the warmer down you won't see any sloppy edges anywhere.

thank you very much for the info! also, are the arm warmers sewn onto the sweater?

They are not.  They're just pinned on for display purposes.

I wove in a little elastic thread (you can find it among the knitting needles and notions in any big box craft store these days) through the last 3-4 rows before beginning the third part of the warmer to help keep it up on the bicep.  I don't know how well that worked since my arms are much thicker than my clients and I wouldn't be able to try them on myself.

oh yes, that's a good idea. i guess the ribbing  on the arm warmer won't produce much elastic effect by itself. thanks again!

I love this so much great job
any chance you would be willing to share your pattern? if not it's ok

I would.  I really would.  My Meulin cat chart is available and I've shared my Mabel charts with anyone who emails me.  I'm not particularly stingy when it comes to fan work.  But there's no pattern for this.  I use Sweater Wizard to draft a pattern for a specific size knitted with my personal gauge. It's too custom to be of use to most people.

i'd be more than happy to answer any question you have about the process.  But I'm afraid I don't have anything useful to give you.

^_^ Well that's alright, and thank you for answering so quickly

It's really nice that you share them when you do have patterns though.

I was wondering if it was hand knit or if you used a machine, either way your stitching is amazing!
Also you said it took a long time to make but was it a difficult piece?

Thanks again

Thank you!  I do use a machine for most commission work to save time.  But the Compa set was done by hand. I think it's easier to go back and fix mistakes when I'm hand knitting.

As far as difficulty goes it depends on how you look at it.  The hardest technique required for this is making cables.  And it's not particularly intricate cablework either...just a series of twists.  I suppose the finishing process is challenging too since the turned edges all have to be sewn down.

If I was reading this off of a pattern, I'd say it was a good intermediate project.  Something that would up the beginner's game a little.  What made it difficult was the amount of winging it.  My software can only spit out a pattern for a plain, featureless, sweater.  So things like where the cables should go and what the rib pattern should be was on me to figure out.
