There is a running joke that eventually all superheros will be Batman but I had a funny thought today about LOTR. Smaug was immune to the influence of the Arkenstone of Thrain, also known as the Heart of the Mountain. Why would a great dragon like Smaug go through all that trouble of traveling across the world and attacking a kingdom unless there was a reason beyond the gold? Perhaps he wanted to prevent the world from erupting into chaos.Related content

You know what's funny? I actually believed it was better to have Smaug in Erebor. For as long as that dragon lived in that mountain, there was peace. No one was arguing over that treasure; no one was having to die for it. And what happens as soon as he's gone? Three races are going to war over something that could easily be shared by all of them. I am so happy that Smaug confirmed my suspicions about Thorin Oakenshield. I really am.

Kind of reminds me of "The Last Ringerbearer", where the idea is that the chronicle of "Lord of the Rings" is a victor's history. Seems to be the same sort of thing here. It is worth noting that after his death, that was when the world truly descended into chaos.

I know, right! Lazy, hairy toed freak brought about the apocalypse because he couldn't just leave well enough alone! Smaug should have told him "I'll make a deal with you, I'll give Oakenshield a choice. He can have the mountain and all it's treasure, or he can have the Arkenstone. If he truly wants his homeland back, I will let him have it, but I'm taking the stone with me when I leave. Go and make him the offer. See for yourself how corrupt his heart truly is then return to me with his answer."
