Description Β  Β  Solarshadow continues and with this page the Rocket base stuff comes to a close. I hope you've enjoyed the segment and after it we get into the meat of the story. Very excited for that. Not to much to say about this, we do continue the varying panels thing. No comments last time on whether they agree or disagree about my thought on varying panels. Not sure if I should take that as if I was right. Just to cover the concept, basically it is that not doing varying panels was so when a significant moment came up like Tyler seeing what happened to his mom, I could focus on it and draw focus on it by having varying panels add a contrasting element. That's the idea anyway. Here I used a similar effect, there's nothing here quite as signifcant as there but I did try to put that emphasis effect on panels that matter more. So let me know what you think. Anyway hope you enjoy and more to come.

Sorry for commeting so much in your older parts, but I got two questions:

1. Was Nymphia hesistating because she thought it could be Marina?

2. How did that fight actually end? If it was a draw, did anyone got the upper hand?

PM-James In reply to dragonofireandwater [2018-07-10 16:43:45 +0000 UTC]

That's perfectly fine. Both of those questions are answered in chapter 2, but the short versions are:

She hesitated because Crystal's voice sounded familiar and when she started the battle with Green, she struck a familiar pose as well.

Crystal later tells the Rocket Admin she threw him out, so presumably she won.

Ok, thanks for clearing.

Huh I thought with Mega Houndoom he may could haveΒ  stand a chance against Crystal, but then again she really is an Elite Trainer and like Team Rockets highest Guardian Around here.

Well the exact details of the fight aren't discussed and Crystalis' other team members haven't been revealed either, so could have been difficult. It's also not exactly even considering Nymphia took out Dugtrio prior to this.

Yea right I forgot about Dugdrio. Well I am pretty sure we will see enough of Adrean and Co. again. Would be nice to see a fight against Green again.

Yeah, Aydrean would have to be at least level 64, so she would be a match for the Elite Four assuming her other pokemon are similar in power (Aydrean is intended to be the strongest one she has, so they're probably at least level 60).

Every single page of your comic I see a comment like that... But to me it's clear that Solar is a dude! Why are people so certain he's a girl? I don't understand!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PM-James In reply to Adanel [2016-10-20 18:56:01 +0000 UTC]

I think it stems from two things. The first is just a general assumption. In most fan work (and I think in the anime as well), Espeon usually is female (especially if it's apart of a shipping) so guessing an Espeon in a story is female is probably going to turn out to be right most of the time.Β
The other is probably how he reacted to Nymphia. In both versions, Shadow (who nobody seems unsure of his gender) falls for her pretty much instantly and Solar doesn't at all. So might have been an assumption that he's not attracted to her because he's a girl too. Where in reality he just doesn't find her attractive, nothing more to it than that. Later he also learns what her views on trainers, the pokeball, stuff like that and they're pretty much the complete opposite of what his are, so he isn't attracted to her mentally either.

Polarissb In reply to PM-James [2016-10-21 21:01:13 +0000 UTC]

Idk, I have about an even espeon gender split in my stories. Actually even split for most things, except to date all my flareon characters are male (although one wants to evolve into flareon to be like his flareon dad, so...)

But yeah, I've got two male and two female vaporeon, one each jolteon, three male flareon, two female, one male umbreon, one each espeon, two female leafeon, one each glaceon, and two female sylveon (although again, they were friends and one evolved to be like the other). I think it's interesting having the different perspectives.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Adanel In reply to PM-James [2016-10-20 20:27:33 +0000 UTC]

That sounds so wrong... Espeon is a male looking pokΓ©mon, and it's about 80% male anyway!^^'
Plus, it's completely dumb to assume a pokΓ©mon is female just for that reason... Better wait until the author tells the gender instead of assuming things based on some narrow-minded and obscure gender stereotypes.

And why would a guy who doesn't fall for a girl be a female?? As you said, people all have their own taste We don't fall in love with every single human we meet, it's ridiculous!^^' And what about gay characters?

By the way, just to be clear, I'm not angry at you!^^ You look like a nice person! I'm angry at people who assume pokΓ©mon who aren't dark/brutal/muscular/attracted to every single female/etc. are automatically gurls... I'm doing a really great effort not to say the words that come to my mind when I think about them!^^' DA would ban me for that! XD

PM-James In reply to Adanel [2016-10-20 22:50:22 +0000 UTC]

Well I'm not a psychologist and won't pretend to be one but I do think the answer to why people would think that way has a lot to do with pre-programmingΒ  'caused by society, media, cultural norms, etc. Something like Espeon has been depicted female so many times, that it is assumed to be female whenever it appears. I feel like if you tell somebody something is true enough times, they will eventually believe it as so, even if what you're telling them isn't true.

I like to use the video game industry to explain how that works. In the 70's and early 80's, video games like the Atari 2600 were advertised as a product for the whole family. However the market crashed in 83' (for various reasons). To build it back up, Nintendo started marketing the NES as a toy apposed to an electronic in-order to get kids to buys it. At the time, boys and girls had been heavily separated, toys for boys, toys for girls, with very little in-between. So Nintendo had to decide whether to market it as a toy for boys or a toy for girls. They picked boys and to get boys to pick it up off the toy shelf, they marketed in "masculine" ways, that the games were powerful, strong, put the player in control, all that sort of stuff. The advertising was successful and the market took off. Sega, Microsoft, Sony, etc did similar marketing due to how successful it was. Thirty years later that kind of marketing had gone on so long that the idea that video games are for boys got put into people's heads. The notion though is ridiculous, why can't a girl enjoy a video game? There is no answer to that question because it's not true but it's been hard wired into people's heads so much that it seems like the sky is blue, an obvious truth, when it isn't.

I don't get mad about it because there's not much you can really do and in many cases, it's not really the person's fault. I've even done it myself before, like I call Mewtwo in Catch Me If You Can a male all the time, even though Mewtwo is supposed to be genderless, even in that story he's supposed to be genderless. When Mew appears, people will probably assume it's female even though Mew is genderless as well. I find the topic of why people think that way more interesting than anything else to be honest.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Adanel In reply to PM-James [2016-10-21 09:38:32 +0000 UTC]

I still don't understand... Why would people depict Espeon as female?? It doesn't make any sense... And still, it's no reason to assume a character's gender like this! People should start to think a bit more instead of just jumping into conclusion.

I know about how much industries like to separate boys and girls... and it's stupid. Why such an arbitrary separation? Why not having toys for blond people and toys for redhead, if we go this way? XD I'm glad this is starting to change! I'm a girl, and videogames have been my passion since forever!

Well I get mad about it because I feel it's completely unfair and if we do nothing these dumb people will carry on spreading their venom! Better insulting them until they understand how ridiculous they were! Better than nothing! But of course, you do what you want! As long as you're not one of them, you're on the good side!^^
(Well, to me most pokΓ©mon are males. Even Mew! I mean, he acts like a child, not a girl! Being a girl myself quite helped: I know how girls really are, and they're certainly not as cute and pink as people naively think! )

PM-James In reply to Adanel [2016-10-21 20:15:09 +0000 UTC]

Well like I said, pretty sure it's a pre-programmed type of thing, I would consider it an instinct. Espeon is almost always depicted female so it's often assumed that it is. Same thing happens with masculine looking characters. To give an idea, in Catch Me If You Can, Mewtwo does battle with a Gyarados. When choreographing the fight, I used the whisker things on Gyarados' face to help show movement with them flicking behind it as it moved. Well on the female Gyarados, they're white and on the male Gyarados they're blue, same blue as it's body. I thought the white ones stood out better and helped make that intended effect stronger. So I made the Gyarados female. Despite that it had the female trait on it, most people thought the Gyarados was male anyway.

Yeah, you can see that sort of thing in a lot of stuff too. Something like why are cartoons for kids? They're not, we just associate cartoons for kids because kids watch them more than adults do. Which is kind of a catch 22 because studios typically don't make cartoons for adults because they believe adults won't watch them and adults don't watch them because studios don't put things in them adults would want to watch.

Well I say cure the disease not the symptoms. Only way to really solve the problem. For me, my thought on gender roles, race roles, specie roles, all that sort of stuff in media pretty much can be summed up like this:
Say there's a deer walking in a forest and it gets attacked by a Panther. If the Panther is male, the deer gets eaten and the Panther lives another day, if the Panther is female the deer gets eaten and the Panther lives another day, if the deer is a doe it escapes the encounter and lives another day, if the deer is a buck it escapes the encounter and lives another day. Gender doesn't matter at all, the only thing that does is which of the two we are focusing on (ergo who we are meant to be rooting for).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Adanel In reply to PM-James [2016-10-22 18:53:50 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it's an instinct. More of a (stupid) cultural thing.
And I really don't understand why people thought as Espeon as female in the first place!
Gender stereotypes are just plain dumb, and it's time people finally realize that.

It's a really vicious circle! I still like to watch cartoons, they're more colourful and energic (in general) than live action films, to me!

Well, in this case, symptoms are a part of the problem: if you don't yell at people they'll never realize they're wrong!

I think that too! Gender doesn't matter, it does only for a very short time when an individual wants offsprings! XD This is another reason why I wonder why people are making such a big deal about it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PM-James In reply to Adanel [2016-10-22 21:20:11 +0000 UTC]

Well it is a cultural thing but people are a lot more like animals then we really like to think. For instance, say every week a leopard shows up and kills a gazelle from a herd. Well this happens enough times the gazelle are going to associate the Leopard with bad, should be avoided. Say one day the Leopard simply strolls on by, no intent on hunting, just passing through. Well the Gazelle are so hard wired to assume it's dangerous by this point they run away from it anyway. People are the same way, say you come up to a cross walk. Normally you look both ways and wait for the car to stop before crossing. Well every single time you cross the street, the car stops for you. Well this happens so many times you get to the point where you just expect the car to stop for you.

Well curing symptoms doesn't really do anything. Best case scenario you can make it go away temporarily but if the disease is still there, the symptoms will just come back. I don't really have a solution to this issue but I think praising media that defies these norms in a constructive way is a good start. Culture and societal trends can change and they do frequently but in nearly every case people need to be convinced that what is being changed needs to be changed. Feel like there's a ton of great quotes from Martin Luthor King Jr. that talks about that.Β  Stuff like "We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools." and "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." He was talking about Civil Rights of course, but I think it applies in other places too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Adanel In reply to PM-James [2016-10-23 09:33:38 +0000 UTC]

The fact that it's "natural" doesn't make it intelligent! And assuming a damn imaginary species is female only based on some ridiculous clichΓ©s isn't the same as being afraid for our life when facing a predator. No matter how many "excuses" these people have, they're simply stupid and need to acknowledge it. Plus, they know that Espeon are mostly males! In the game, male eevee are way more common! So why would they think something as dumb as "Espeon are girly"? They just don't make sense!

At least I'm doing something! And I've already convinced some people they were just acting without thinking. Doing nothing won't help at all. And don't worry, I encourage the good behavours too. Insulting people with gender stereotypes AND praising the more intelligent ones who don't have them! That's how we make a society change, no matter how much time it takes! These people need to understand they're thinking in a wrong way.

No comment about the varying panels and the page itself. Not too much going on for this page.Β
What I'm looking at though...is the "first part" panel showing the old version of the first page. Shouldn't it have the remake version there?

Not yet, want to finish all the remake pages before changing it, that way you can read the story from beginning to end. Admittedly I probably could do it now, since the only pages left are literal remake pages but still feel I should do it that way (espeically since there are going to be a few panel differences and such, not much but a few)
