Solar's got that all under control so there's not much to worry about. Nymphia and Shadow aren't as close to Blaze and her kids as a Solar is either.

Just making sure... isn't water bad for fire types?

You can't take the games too literally (this is actually a major theme of my pokemon writing). "Water beats fire" yes, but the only time fire/water weaknesses really seem to apply is when the pokemon has exposed flames as part of their body (Charmander line, slugma, etc). It's not like fire types are the Wicked Witch of the West and melt on contact. I had a quilava character who sort of summed that up:

Β Β Β Β The quilava – Ryan – shook his head. β€œIt’s not mine,” he said. β€œI wouldn’t mind anyway. I actually live out in the grassland most of the time; I only came here because the stream I live by is low this year.”

Β Β Β Β Tyler was confused for a moment. β€œI didn’t know you needed water. You’re a fire type.”

Β Β Β Β β€œOf course I drink water. Everything does.” Ryan tilted his head to the side, considering. β€œWell, almost everything, anyway.”

Kind of the same thing with bug and psychic. Psychics don't lose to bugs because bug bites magically hurt them more than other bites, I think it's more because insects run so much more on chemicals and instincts than conscious thought that psychics can't affect or read their minds much. I'm actually writing a 'thing' on how type advantages would play out in stories; I'll post a journal once I've gone over every type.

Flareon actually has a flame sac inside it. Hot springs would make sense, considering their healing, according to cretaceousisle . And they are hot water. Cold water(not ice) might not be good for Flareon, considering the flame sac. Thank you for the explanation though. ^^

Well psychic's weaknesses are all tied around things that scare people and make them uneasy. That will be explored when Nightmare returns later. In fiction, Psychic's usually demand time to concentrate in order to use their abilities. Well fears cloud the mind, they make it impossible to do that. Say you're trying to write a paper and giant tarantula starts crawling up your leg. Most people would probably flip out and stop working on the paper immediately. Things like Scorpions, spiders, wasps, etc all do that. If they appear, they usually become the only thing the person can think about and if they disappear with no trace, then people generally wont go back to what they're doing until they know it's gone. Ghosts are the same sort of thing. If you're afraid of a specter, creature in the night, monster, any of those things then you're never going to be able to focus on anything but what is haunting you. dark's immunity can be seen as even if you can overcome the fear and concentrate anyway... concentrate on what? Dark means you can't see it it's pretty much impossible to concentrate on it. I'd imagine a dark type as a part of their powers is to emanate a dark aura that psychic energy can't pass through, no matter how powerful.

I always felt like dark types would have more emotion-based powers too (look up descriptions for Dark Pulse, Nasty Plot, etc). Like, it's not that psychics can't touch their minds, but dark types can overwhelm them with emotional floods if they do, or conceal their actual intent (I have a scene where a dark type beats an espeon by making her anticipate the wrong move every time he attacks). Sort of "trust me, my mind is not a place you want to be."

But I'd agree with the unsettling thing. With bugs there's a sort of terror from realizing that unlike everything else, you can't get inside the head of the thing that's coming at you because it's just a solid wall of purpose there, and it doesn't move or act like a mammal or reptile or anything.

Well the only problem with that is it only covers the very basic concept of what a psychic is apposed to the eastern version of psychics, which is what Pokemon based there's more heavily on (most of Pokemon's mythos can be tracked back to Eastern mythology). Psychics were created as a metaphor to inspire warriors to always try to improve themselves. They were said to be a warrior that had become absolutely perfect in mind, body, and spirituality. Many Psychic powers stem from that idea and it's why psychic powers don't all relate to telepathy since some of them have bodily and spirtual elements to them. Some powers include:

Apportation: Ability to teleport oneself or another
Clairvoyance: Ability to detect something or somebody via extrasensory means
Precognition: Ability to accurately predict the future
Retrocognition: Ability to precieve past events the psychic was not there to witness
Omnipresence: Ability to be in multiple places at once
Clairaudience: Ability to ask the dead or ghosts for information
Telepathy: Ability to read somebody else's mind or to transfer your thoughts into somebody else's mind.
Telekinisis: Ability to manipulate objects with your mind.
Psychometry: The ability to learn about a person or thing by touching them
Mind control: The ability to control someone else's mind or body
levitation: The ability to fly or float without wings, thrust, etc.
Aura reading: The ability to detect energy fields around people, usually determines how powerful somebody is and if they are good or evil.
Astral Projection: Ability to project mental thoughts that other people can see. Sometimes this can be used on other people's thoughts.
Death-Warning: A warning to the psychic that somebody is going to die.
Electrokinesis: Ability to generate and control lightning
Pyrokinesis: Ability to generate and control fire
Hypnosis: Ability to put somebody else to sleep or in a sleep like state
Channeling: The ability to communicate with and summon spirits

And there's others. Some Psychics in media don't have all of these or might specialize in specific ones but a master psychic should be able to at least perform these abilities. Usually they are not passive abilities though and the Psychic has to do something to use them. For instance they won't just know what you're thinking, they will have to actually read your mind. Dark types though seem to be immune to all this stuff and the easy explanation for that is that all these powers use the same energy which the dark type blocks. Kind of like it doesn't matter how powerful a demon is, they still are repelled by holy objects.Β

I just don't feel that the easy explanation does apply here. Espeon, for example, reads its opponent's moves primarily from the way they disturb the air when they move (according to Pokedex entries), not precognition or telepathy. I just feel like it makes the stories more interesting when they're not so linear. Just because pokemon ate the same type doesn't mean they operate the same.

PM-James In reply to Polarissb [2016-12-22 22:59:20 +0000 UTC]

Well that can still be described as Precognition, precognition is simply described as the ability to accurately predict the future. If they used different methods then it would stand to reason that some Psychic types could get around the dark immunity, especially if they're fighting an inexperienced dark type. Ones like Mewtwo and Alakazam are often described to be masters of all forms of psychic powers yet they can't get around it either (under normal conditions). If the power is blocked by a passive ability like the aura they have surrounding them, then it be work no matter how experienced or inexperienced the two fighters are since a passive ability is in effect no matter what the user is doing. It would also explain why Miracle eye robs them of the immunity by essentially disabling the ability to produce that aura.

Wouldn't think so, games said hotsprings are supposed to have healing qualities to them. Pokemon have never seemed to be weak to the element itself, like Wooper is x4 weak to grass but shows up in tall grass looking as happy as ever. So I doubt it.
