Every year, we all resolve to become better people. It’s amazing what can happen within a single year. I thought I was always like a blueberry pie, sweet as can be. Sometimes, however, the berries can get sour, spoiling the bushel. And last summer, I was a sour berry. It all started at The Pie Factory one day in July. Business was slower than usual, but bananas were still needed. Hannah showed up right on schedule, with bananas by the bunches.

“Hi, Jess!," Hannah Peele arrived right on time with a truck full of yellow fruit. "Got your shipment of bananas in! Hope you find them a-peel-ing!”

“Aw, thanks sweetie," said Jess Desserts with a smile and a pity laugh. "You know, Hannah, it’s so strange. Usually, we have a lot of customers this time of year.”

“Hm, maybe they’re at that new ice cream place! Let me tell ya, they go bananas for bananas! Hahaha!”
“You deliver to them?” Jess looked at Hannah with curiosity.

“Yeah! They use my bananas for their Slipper Splits!”
“Slipper Splits?" The naming convention for this new place's banana splits caught Jess off guard. "That sounds like a dish I would name…”

"Oh, in that case, you’d really like the Sundae Shoe. You see," explained Hannah, "the people there take scoops of ice cream and serve them on the- oh wait, that’s a secret. Almost made it slip. Heheh.”

"On their what? Their feet?" Jess's eyes grew larger as a bead of sweat emerged from her temple.

Hannah blushed and looked to the side. "Mayyyyybeeeee....?"
“Feet... Ice cream parlor... 'Sundae Shoe?' Secret menu item!?" Jess's brain storm almost seemed to cause her entire body to glow up, and not in the good way. "OH NOOO!!!! They didn’t just steal my idea!”

“I thought that given your similar business practices, you were working together," said an off-guard Hannah, stepping back slowly from Jess. "Guess not...?”
“No!" Jess's pink blush turned redder by the second. "The Pie Factory is supposed to be the original source of foot-themed desserts, and this new place stomps in and takes our idea! And worst of all, it's a secret idea! Spanish Pie is supposed to be a well-guarded secret! We don’t want the health inspector to shut us down! She’s a very strict disciplinarian! And if someone else takes my idea, they could say they were inspired by us! Our secret would slip!”

“Good one!”
“I’m not joking, Hannah," worried Jess, her face covered in sweat. "I’m going to this ice cream place to have a talk with the manager!”

“You mean the captain,” corrected Hannah.
“Captain!?”

“Yeah, she likes to be called that," mentioned Hannah in a slightly condescending tone. "The ice cream place is called the S.S. Soft Serve, and she takes the whole pirate thing seriously. Pretty weird, if you ask me.”

“That explains why she pirated my idea!”
“Ohhh, that makes sense now. Clever!”

"Ooooooooh...!" Jess continued boiling up inside. The commotion caused the other employees to look in. They could have sworn that her eyes were turning from their usual purpley-blue to a mean shade of green.

The sound of Keya Graham's high heels filled the room when she stepped in to intervene. “Jess, I know you’re concerned," she said in her smooth voice, "but step back and calm down.”
“Yeah, you’re so red, you look more like a strawberry than a blueberry.” Hannah was getting not just concerned but scared.

“I’m not going to have the Pie Factory threatened by this… pirate weirdo!" She swiped her chef hat off her head and threw it violently to the ground. She took off one of her Size 12 flats, holding it dominantly above her head. "Keya, you’re in charge. Time to give this Captain a piece of my mind! IT'S ON.” She stormed out of The Pie Factory, making her way to the S.S. Soft Serve in a huff.

The others stared at Jess in disbelief.

“Wow, I’ve never seen Jess this angry before,” said Hannah silently.

"Is she going to be okay?" Jack O'Carver was almost too afraid to say anything, and he usually liked scary things. Even his will-o-wisps were smaller than normal.

All Barry Boysen could do was look in awe as Jess stormed to the ice cream parlor. Perhaps it was her dominant personality that wowed him, or the fact that she held her shoe above her head.

As the level head of the kitchen, as well as Jess's best friend, Keya helped break the silence. “Jess is a sweet person, and has a big heart for her bakery and her staff. It’s admirable, but sometimes it leads her to a major competitive side. She's probably jealous of this ice cream place, and she's definitely concerned about the secret of our business getting into the wrong hands."

"I don't blame her," interjected Jack. "I've seen the health inspector, and she's a beast with a clipboard!"

"Uh huh..." murmered Barry.

"I know I can't control Jess," said Keya, "but I hope she knows what she’s doing. Hopefully she can come to her senses...”
