Part One
At long last, here's Part Four of Jess à la Mode! Now with Chip here, how will the story continue? Let's find out:
___
“What on Earth is going on here?” Chip finally had the opportunity to speak up. That didn’t last very long, however.
“You see, Nella took my idea, a secret idea-”
“This sea wench barrrged into me office-”
“Her blunder could have costed me my job-”
“I be runnin’ a hearty crew, then she arrives-”
“She denied the Sundae Shoe, but you confirmed it-”
“Yee don’t just come in and tickle someone-”
FWEEEEEET!!! Chip whistled loudly to break up Jess and Nella’s frantic retelling of events. “Time out! I can hardly understand you two like this. All I wanted to say was that Nella was low on vanilla ice cream, but now I see this tall, blue-haired woman…?”
Chip inspected the baker for a few seconds. She seemed familiar somehow. He snapped his fingers, quickly making the connection.
“I think I know you! You’re Jess Desserts from The Pie Factory!”
“You recognize me? I don’t think we’ve met before.” Jess got up off the ground, brushing her apron and tidying her hair. She blushed, embarrassed to be meeting someone new in an awkward situation like this.
“Yeah,” replied Chip, “my sister Fortuna always tells me stories about the Pie Factory. She talks about your kind customer service, your willingness to hire new people, and your Spanish Pie.”
“That’s precisely why I’m here, Chip,” said Jess. “Hannah told me that this place was selling a dish called a ‘Sundae Shoe,’ and it sounded very similar to Spanish Pie.”
“She’s spreading lies! Lies!” Nella interrupted loudly. “Help me out here, Chip!”
“Captain, I’m trying to listen to Jess,” interjected Chip. “Besides, she’s not lying. We do, indeed, carry a Sundae Shoe item.”
“Then how come you’ve never served one, Chip?” Nella was getting frantic, sweating and blushing.
“Because I’m loyal to my girlfriend. I thought you knew that! Now stop interrupting, Nella.”
Nella was visibly shaking.
“Wait,” continued Chip, “ I thought that you and Nella were working together, and that’s why the Sundae Shoe is like the Spanish Pie. You didn’t give Nella permission to borrow the idea?”
“Nope,” said Jess firmly. “I would have recalled making business plans with a girl who talks like a pirate.”
“Well, I don’t see what the big deal is,” replied Nella. “There be no patent on Spanish Pie!”
“Because it’s a secret,” Jess said in a huff.
“Ladies, calm down!” Chip brought order back to the conversation. “So, Jess wanted the idea a secret, and she never negotiated with Nella. Captain, why and how did you take Jess’s idea?”
Nella was still sweating, her head hot from the stress. Chip was a smart guy, and she knew deep down she couldn’t keep up her act around him. She took a deep breath, took off her captain hat, and began explaining herself:
“Okay, okay, I’m no dead man, I’ll tell me tale. It all happened a few years back, before the S.S. Soft Serve set sail. Sandalwood was a new spot on the map fer me, and I wanted to get a sweet treat. The Pie Factory sounded like a hidden treasure, and I was welcomed with kind service from a hearty crew. I didn’t see Jess, but there was a cool green siren in sunglasses, a tall orange fellow in sunglasses, and best of all, a smaller, Smee-like fellow with hair as deep blue as the sea. No sunglasses, though.
“Anyways, I ordered a slice of boysenberry pie from the lad because he recommended it. Looked like he was also eyin’ down at me feet and blushin’. It was cute, actually. He then hands me a note talkin’ about Spanish Pie. I was curious, so I followed him into the room. There, he put his feet on a platter an’ covered it with toppins. It was a novel concept, and I had a good time lickin’ the toppins off of those cute feet. I anchored that memory into me brain.
“Cut back to earlier this summer. After years of plannin’, the S.S. Soft Serve finally set anchor in Sandalwood. It had it all, a strong wooden exterior, nautical decorations, and all kinds of tasty frozen treasures. Still, I wanted more, something that would net in more customers than a school o’ fish. I thought back to The Pie Factory an’ used that idea to concoct the Sundae Shoe. That invitation to the room was like a treasure map, and those feet were certainly treasures. I wanted to offer that to my customers as well.
“And… Thinking about it now… I might have taken the pirate gimmick a little too far.” The tone in Nella’s voice shifted from her gruff, pirate captain pattern to something softer and more natural. “I was so focused on being the captain of an ice cream parlor that I might have gone overboard with it, uh, no pun intended. I was wanting to be the best, and that led me to taking piracy too far. It might not have been a sunken treasure that I stole, but stealing someone else’s idea is just as bad. Jess, I am so sorry if this caused you any trouble.”
“I accept your apology, Nella,” said Jess softly. She was looking down at her large size 12 feet. She was deep in thought, thinking about Nella’s mature apology. She didn’t steal Jess’s idea, she paid homage to it. Jess thought back to the compliments that Nella gave to the Pie Factory staff, as well as what Chip said minutes ago about her customer service.
Jess pictured herself as a green-eyed monster that took the kind words Nella and Chip said and stomped them into dust. She pictured her friends staring in horror at the beast she had become. Though that fantasy was a metaphor, she recalled how vengeful she truly was when she stormed into Nella’s office without any second thoughts. For once, this was a tickle fight she regretted having. Tears welled up in her purple-blue eyes, and she covered them up with her large hands. Jess began to sob right in front of Chip and Nella. “Ohhhhh, I AM a sea hag!”
Nella went to Jess with a concerned look on her face. “No, I didn’t really mean that. It was a spur of the moment.”
“No, I really was,” cried Jess. “I’m usually so calm and collected, but I let envy and my concern for my business control me! I wasn’t just being protective of my secret. I was envious to a dangerous degree! I never should have invaded your Captain’s Quarters and tickled the secrets out of you! And I should have been cool with an ice cream parlor coexisting with a bakery! Nella, I am so sorry for acting so barbaric!” She put her face back into her eyes and cried more sorrowful pools of tears.
Nella put her arm around Jess. “It’s okay, Jess. I was in the wrong for stealing your idea. You had every right to be upset.”
“But I became a monster! A horrible, green-eyed monster!” Jess kept weeping loudly.
“But I pirated, and that was wrong.”
“I was wrong, too,” said Jess. “I should have been all right with a good business owner like you borrowing the idea. You run a great ship and you kept the Sundae Shoe secret well hidden.”
“Of course I kept it secret,” assured Nella. “I had to hide the food-on-feet thing from the health inspector. Have you seen her? She’s a very strict disciplinarian! A beast with a clipboard!”
“That’s what we say at The Pie Factory!” Jess began to chuckle, wiping her eyes. Nella laughed with Jess, hugging the baker. Jess hugged the captain back, her cries of sorrow becoming joyful laughter.
“That’s wonderful,” said Chip with a smile. “I always thought that pie and ice cream were better together.”
“That gives me an idea!” Nella’s eyes lit up as she turned back to Jess. “What if I gave you authentic S.S. Soft Serve ice cream to top your pies with? I don’t think you have à la mode as a menu option.”
“Oh, wow, you’re right…” Jess blushed again, embarrassed that she didn’t think of that. “But that just won’t do!”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ll do it under three conditions.” Jess stood up with her hands on her hips. “First, if you let me use your ice cream, I guess you’ll just have to borrow some of my pie toppings! It’s the least I can do.”
“Aw, that’s sweet of you, Jess,” said Nella happily. “I’ll gladly accept your offer.”
“Second, I want you to continue serving Sundae Shoes. You have really nice feet, and it would be a shame if they stopped being frozen treats.”
“Aw, you,” Nella said blushing, footsieing Jess’s larger feet. “So, what’s the third thing?”
“Oh that’s simple,” replied Jess. “I want you to act like a pirate again. It’s part of your character, and it’s grown on me.”
“Really? I thought it annoyed people. And some think it’s weird.”
“Aw, phooey on them! If anyone says that, I’ll help them walk the plank! You’re the captain!”
“Yer right, Jess,” said Nella in her pirate voice. She proudly picked up her captain hat, placing it (and the feather) back on her head. “I be the captain, and I made a great new mate! Har har har!”
Jess and Nella hugged each other and continued footsieing, symbolizing their newfound partnership and friendship.
“You’re fantastic, Captain Nella,” cheered Jess.
“No! You ARRRRRRRE!”
“No, you! Your idea will definitely help out The Pie Factory!”
“And yers will bring in more guests to the Soft Serve!”
Chip watched as the friendship bloomed. He was moved by how quickly the ladies became friends. Suddenly, his eyes brightened. “You know, Jess, I have an idea, too.”
“Really, Chip? What’s that?”
“My girlfriend, Candi, knows a wonderful peppermint pie recipe. She can join you, too! It’ll help boost your business more, especially around the holidays.”
“Wonderful idea!” Jess brought him in to join the hug. “I’m so lucky to have such great new friends!” The sweet trio hugged each other a little more… until they remembered to put more vanilla ice cream in the Sundae Shoe room.
I was out of control that summer, I must admit. From that moment on, I resolved to be a better, more professional business owner. If more competition comes to Sandalwood, I’ll let them run their business, and I certainly won’t storm to them if they copy any of my ideas. In fact, I’ll be happy if they have their own Spanish Pie or Sundae Shoe. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
And in the grand scheme, it’s great that more people are experimenting with footy foods. They’re expressing themselves creatively and letting others celebrate their foot fetishes. As kind and caring as I try to be, I am still human, and I will have moments of weakness. Thankfully, those moments are ones to learn from, and it may come in a form that you least expect. Just don’t try to do it the way that I did.
Now, this may seem like the end, but there is a little bit more to this story…
