Jess marched her way to the S.S. Soft Serve angrily. It wasn’t hard at all to find it. She could hear the murmurings of the long crowd. They were lined up at a large ship-shaped building across town. It was a hot day, and the excited patrons were happily talking about the ice cream concoctions.

“I’m going to get a Root Beer Buccaneer!”
“I’ll get the Butterscotch Doubloon!”
“A Peanut Port and Strawberry Starboard for me!”
“I want a cone.”

The murmuring didn’t help Jess. She continued burning up, mostly from jealousy. She was still focused on addressing the plagiarism of the Sundae Shoe and the concerns she had about her foot dessert secrets getting into the wrong hands. The S.S. Soft Serve was so busy, it took a while for the line to move. She had time to see three employees with their hands full, scooping up frozen treats at a hurried pace. Their sailor suits were white, but they certainly looked colorful.

There was a tall, brawny fellow who was scooping up ice cream like a pro, going into the tubs fast. He looked like he didn’t skip arm day, leg day, or any day of the week. Certainly made the ladies swoon, though his attention was on the guy next to him. He was smaller and was wearing a strawberry-looking knit cap and rosy shades. He was adding toppings to the ice cream, and also trying to flirt with the ladies. Finally, there was a little lady with triple-colored hair. She didn’t seem as impressed as the two men. All she was focused on was taking orders. She seemed a bit bored despite all the hullabaloo. When it was Jess’s turn, they all took a look in her direction.

Though the wait in line did calm Jess down a bit, she was still visibly angry. She had a serious look on her face, a shadow forming beneath her curly locks. Swallowing her pride, she spoke to the trio of sailors.

“Hello. I want to speak to the captain.”

The strong guy seemed to shiver, his smile turning into a face of fear. “Gary… Dude… This blue-haired woman is creeping me out…”

Gary, the strawberry boy, was getting pink in the face, complementing his red hat. “Yeah, Rocky… Isn’t she beautiful?”

Rocky looked to the triple-haired girl. In clenched teeth, he said with a slight panic, “Nina, we lost Gary! What do we do?” Nina still didn’t seem impressed. She thought to herself.
Oh great, another Karen. Wait a minute…

She took a good look at Jess, studying her outfit.

An apron that says The Pie Factory. Didn’t Nella talk about that place before? And she addressed Nella as “the captain,” not “the manager.” She’s not a Karen, she’s one of Nella’s loco friends!

“Relax, you dorks,” said Nina in a slightly stern tone. “She’s probably here for a meeting with Nella. She’s clearly a baker.” She looked back to Jess. “The Captain’s Quarters are in the back, you can’t miss it.” Rocky pointed to the back timidly to aid Nina. Gary did, too, but with a big smile and blush on his face.

“Thank you.” Jess walked seriously to the office of the Captain. She was able to hear the faint sounds of rhythmic scrubbing in the back. She could also make out some loud singing. Sounded like a sea shanty. Jess listened in:

There was a cap’n named Nella with a plan that’s a steal,
Scoop ice cream on feet and call it a meal,
The whipped cream was cool and the sauces would stick,
The laddies and lasses would give them a lick!
Nella, oh Nella, your feet make them swoon,
Your toes pierce more hearts than a sharpened harpoon!

Jess was even angrier after hearing that song. “Calm down, Jessica, just talk to the captain…” After breathing deeply, the hot-headed baker cooled down again, but only a little. She still felt warm and her chest was pounding. She knocked on the door.

“Wuh-HUH!? Arrr! Coming!” Sounded like someone from the inside of the office was fumbling around and tripping. Also sounded like some water spilled to the ground. “Yarrrrr…” The door opened, and a woman with creamy blonde hair emerged.

She was a tall girl, but not as tall as Jess. She wore a sailor shirt like her employees, but the captain’s hat on her head symbolized her position of power. She wore shorts that resembled a waffle cone. She also wasn’t wearing any shoes on her large feet. Though they weren’t as big as Jess’s size 12s, they looked to be at least one size down. They were also soaking wet, almost as if she had just scrubbed them clean. The captain looked to Jess with her blue eyes and spoke.

“Uh, ahoy there! How may I be of service to yee…?” The captain looked at the Pie Factory logo on Jess’s apron. She appeared to be sweating a little.

“Ahoy, captain,” said Jess sternly. “I’ve come to discuss the Sundae Shoe.”

“EEP!” The captain’s neck sunk in a little, her sweating growing more profuse. “Eh, what Sundae Shoe? I don’t have a Sundae Shoe!” She looked around nervously.

“So you don’t have a dish where you put ice cream on your feet?”

“No, of course not,” stammered the captain. “Why would I do that? That’s a health code violation! Ickier than bilge rats on a boat! Ick…!”

“If your feet have nothing to hide, then how come they’re bare, wet, and sparkling, as if you just washed them?” Jess was eyeing not just the captain’s feet, but also a spilled bucket of water and a brush near her desk.

“Uh, I like to scrub me soles! It’s refreshin’ after a hot day on the job! Reminds me of the sea!”

“And that song you were singing loudly?”

“Uhhh, that was a song about a different Nella, arr harr… Complete coincidence…”

“A Nella ‘with a plan that’s a steal.’ Steal from whom, exactly? A certain bakery with a different Jess?”

“You must have barnacles in your brain, you bellowing baker!” Nella was starting to sound more angry than nervous, but her voice was still shaking. “I run a ship-shape vessel here! I don’t steal from anyone, and there’s no feet in me food!” She was still sweating a lot. This pirate looked to be closely guarding her treasure. She backed away from Jess, ultimately tripping to the ground on her own discarded boat shoes.

Nella’s answers weren’t enough for Jess. She wanted to know the truth. She peered back at the scrub brush on the floor and grabbed it. She made sure that Nella was still grounded by sitting on her legs. “Let me rephrase this. Is there a Sundae Shoe, and where did it come from?”

“Yarr, you’re a crazy sea wench!” Nella was trying to get up, but Jess kept her to the ground. “Thar be no Sundae Shoe, and even if there was, it be me own intellectual property!”

“Not talking, hm?” Jess began to scrub Nella’s toes with the brush. “Is there a Sundae Shoe?”

“AAAACK!! ARRHARHARHARHARHAR!!!” Nella began laughing heartily. It was one thing to scrub your own feet, but it was another having someone else do it. It tickled like crazy! She tried to deflect Jess’s toe blows with some careful scrunches, but the brush’s bristles still managed to floss right through her long digits. “HARHARHARHARHAR!!! I hahahave no sercetsss!!! Now let me goooo! HARHARHARHAR!!!”

“We can do this all day if we have to,” said Jess, a smile growing on her face. She kept on scrubbing Nella’s feet, hoping the bird would sing, or in this case, hoping the parrot would squawk…
