This piece started out as a very idle doodle among idle doodles, but eventually I developed it and I'm kindasorta pleased with the result. She is supposed to be Selvaggia of Staufen, natural daughter of emperor Fredrick II and first wife of Ezzelino da Romano . Now, Ezzelino was a feudal tyrant who ruled most of the region where I live around the mid 13th century. Think of a real life mix of Roose Bolton and... Euron Greyjoy? He is still present in local popular culture as a synonimous with ruthless tyranny, but I admit I never researched his story that much, and now I want to *pouts* So I was reading up what I could find online, and I realized that he married Selvaggia when she was thirteen and he was in his mid forties (the dates in the English wiki are wrong there). I know, other times, other culture, etc., but still. Can you imagine being thirteen and going to marry the meanest mofo of your times? Not exactly ideal, I say. So I began to doodle Selvaggia as rather childlike, as many thirteen years old actually are, just because I wanted to visualize the creepy side of it.- Painted in SAI

Thank you! That's exactly what prompted me to sketch this - trying to reconcile our modern notion of emotional growth, and the fact that this sort of marriage was pretty normal back then, so [i]maybe[/i] less traumatic? I really can't tell, so yeah, I guess that's why the drawing gives mixed vibes.

No, lei muore a diciannove anni, si dice l'abbia uccisa lui perché gli aveva messo le corna. Alè! tieni conto che Ezzelino è uno che quando stava morendo e gli volevano dare l'estrema unzione, si levò di dosso il prete bestemmiando. Un omino pacifico!
