Description
..., Dreams and BeautyGift art for of her beautiful character Calysra aka Cy'ra.
And also my first digital piece ever.
Unlike what I thought, digital paiting is actually fun.
I had never really felt like doing an actual digital piece, even after I got my tablet, which simply wasn't used.
I guess I should thank for the day I was bored to death and decided to start sketching around with it.
And Cy'ra just popped in! As I completed the sketch, it became Cy'ra's. I had been wanting to draw her again for Kate for quite a while, seems like she decided to take action.
Now this is the important part, PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU'RE GOING TO CRITIQUE!
First of all, critics on the anatomy aren't really necessary, I've already noticed many flaws myself and it isn't the kind of critic I'm looking for on this one.
My biggest mistake here, I would say, is that this is the actual image size. My lack of experience and not being used to draw digitally led me to completely forget to work on a much larger canvas.
This left me with little to none space for a more detailed work. I had to use 1 px brush many times and it was a huge pain. After this one, I'm sure I won't forget it next time!
It also made it more difficult to use various tones for each section of color, so smoothing down some parts of the piece was impossible for me(see muzzle for example...)
I followed Kate's advice and made the snow darker than I originally had [link] . The snow was also a huge pain to make and I definitely am not very pleased with how it looks. I had no clue of how to paint the part where Cy'ra feet sink on the snow too. Wandered from layer to layer trying to figure out how to do it XD
And finally, I had huge difficulties making the part where the tail and beard connect to the body, so it looks a bit weird. I think it was mostly because of the small size of the picture.
I really appreciate some feedback and good constructive critic on this one. I've made up my mind and want to give digital art a chance, although I'll be going traditional one mostly, simply because I like it better and some other reasons that are hard to explain.
This is a very simple image, I didn't want to get too much on my plate right on my first try, but I can say that I'm very proud of it. I never thought it would look like this. It's not a masterpiece, but it already has a special place in my heart
Hope you like it Kate! And I hope you have some good advice for me now that it's finished!

Wow this is gorgeous! And I wouldn't be able to tell it was your first digital piece! Yeah snow is really tough, but I think you did a pretty good job here. And the texture of the mane and tail are so life-like!

I wish I had more time to practice on digital art though, school's eating away all of it. And if I'm not studying, I'm working at the vet(which has been awesome!), so my time for drawing is reduced to almost absolute zero.
Thank you so much Emily!

This is gorgeous! I'm afraid I can't offer any digital critique or advice, seeing as I've never used it myself But as others have said, it's awesome for a first try! It looks so smooth, especially the mane and tail. Beautiful sky ^.^

I would give you a critique but it seems you have enough already, so I'll just sit back and admire :3

It's beautiful, and Cy'ra seems to be a popular choice for my friends' first digital pieces. =boribaby 's first digital piece was also of Cy'ra. XD
I think it's wonderful. The lighting seems very realistic to me, and I love the way you painted her.
I really can't find anything to critique. It looks like it's mostly the technique that you're struggling with (like getting things to blend and things like that) and that will come naturally as you continue to practice and try out new brushes.
I'd also say more, but I'm currently ridding myself of a headache, so my brain isn't really up to the job of coming up with new and unique ways of praising this, so THANK YOU and I LOVE IT. That is all.

Cy'ra is just that awesome
I really wish I had more time for digital art, but right now there's no way for me to work on another piece, so I'll wait, probably until Christmas break.
I hope you're feeling better now! And you're welcome!
And thank you so much for this awesome comment

Oh this is lovely! I messed around with the palette of a friend of mine and it was really fun. I want one so badly now! I really like the shading of the muscles on her. I think you did a great job. One thing is that I think there could be some shadows in the snow where the tail is touching it.

i hink this has turned out quite beautiful i mean i totally love it
also the snow turned out amazing good job making it darker
as for critique
to avoid useing the 1px brush to much i nrmaly never work with a canvas any smaller then 1200px by 800 px that way i can get as bunch detail in as posible but not be burdened by the evil 1 px brush
overall i think this is quite an amazing piece i am totally in love the the head great job this is most defiantly Fav worthy

For a first try it's nice, it's definitely better than my first digital painting.
I can notice here some flaws which to say the truth, there's no way I could myself not to make on such small canvas, for example eye, or that place where horn bonds with head.
Also for the snow in background, well, even if it's only snow there still needs to be perspective, like color tones getting lighter further away and more details in front and more blurry snow closer to the horizon. And by the way in front it could be even more darker.
About mane and tail, well, it would be better not to draw each hair stand separately as you did here, that takes more time and result looks less realistic, for that you might take a look at these tutorials [link] [link] [link] These are the ones I like from all that huge hair tutorial section. But if you don't like these techniques, you can search for others or develop your own hair painting technique.
And one more thing, try adding some textures, that could make it more interesting to look at a digital painting. In photoshop there's all kinds of brushes for that available for downloading, for painter, well I don't really paint in it, so I'm not sure, but there must be different brushes you can use. What I mean is that don't use only one, default brush, experiment and watch what will happen.

PolarisAstrum In reply to AndreasAvester [2009-10-25 12:49:32 +0000 UTC]
I tried to get some details on the horn/forehead area, but couldn't so I had to give up.
I see what you mean about the snow, I fully agree. I think doing that would add much more depth to the work too.
I'll be sure to check out those tutorials. Drawing each hair separately definitely did not give the effect I wanted...
I don't like any of the other brushes on painter, only the digital airbrush one(which was the one I used), but I'm sure I'll find which brushes work best for what with some practice.
Thank you so much for the wonderful advice hun!
