Description After being questioned a lot of times (even by close friends of mine) if I had gotten implants, and after a LOT of thought on the subject of "should I post something like this?" I thought to myself: why not?

Lately this has been a major part of my cosplays and I know not having enough cleavage is a reason many girls end up not cosplaying some characters... and that's just sucky =[

So I hope you enjoy! =]

I was intrigued by this post because of it's caption, however, after reading the comments, I decided to favorite it... it also made me wonder if any high school student has ever attempted to write a research paper for English class on this topic...it would be quite interesting to see the reactions of the students, teachers, and other faculty of the school. I would imagine that the reactions would mirror the reactions reflected by the comments. Not only that, but this post could easily be used as a primary source for citation purposes. (Sorry, I just went on a tangent and over analyzed everything...)

A part of me is sympathetic to girls wishing to have bigger breasts and then a nasty little part of me goes "Sorry skinny girls, you can't have it all." The reason why you see extremely skinny girls with big boobs in anime is because it's a cartoon. Sorry to disappoint you boys but it's very rare for a girl to *naturally* have extremely large boobs and an extremely skinny waist and if they do you may wanna think twice about snatching that one up because you have a future of medical bills to look forward to.

Overall nicely done tutorial for girls that need this little detail to really make their cosplay look realistic although I would caution against pumping and boosting and forcing those puppies up too much as eventually after years of repeated motion it could cause stretching-and not in a good way.

You've turned the argument into something very shallow, but some people here have made valid and interesting points regarding the perception of a woman's body in modern culture and how women and men choose to respond to it in the cosplay community.

MochiPochii In reply to Miroir-Clepsydre [2013-06-23 20:05:01 +0000 UTC]

:/ TBH I agree that there are some crazy amazing points being made on the perception of womens bods, but there's no need to say she's demeaning their arguments! She's just offering another perspective on a very socially significant subject! and making a relevant point at that! No need to have a go at her

NAOWM In reply to Miroir-Clepsydre [2013-06-23 19:35:13 +0000 UTC]

I personally don't cosplay, so I'm kind of stating that from my theatre experience. I personally treat when I have to do stuff like this for a character quite casually(despite the fact it can be uncomfortable), although I can understand that not all people would do that, and that bothers me.

Be stuff like this, I am not only referring to a time when I had to stuff my bra, but also an occasion when I had to flatten my chest, square my shoulders with a wire hanger and stuff socks into my trousers to play a creepy male character.

I was trying to make the point that I think it stupid to treat women like they are doing something wrong if they choose to take action to boost their cleavage for a character or any other reason and then conversely say it's okay to flatten their chest for similar reasons. I'm sorry I couldn't express that well enough to make my point(even if it is a shallow one) clear. As for the 'comments be crazy' comment a lot of them are, in my opinion, so I apologize if I degraded or demeaned the valid points some people have made.

(This is longer than I expected it would be)

Miroir-Clepsydre In reply to NAOWM [2013-06-23 20:32:00 +0000 UTC]

I very much agree with you that it seems hypocritical to approve of a certain body part 'manipulation' and disapprove another, also when it comes to cleavage.
I think many people here expressed their doubts because of the reason behind the need the enhance a cosplayer's chest -

Most of the female character design in anime, manga and computer games is notoriously typical - a tiny waist and huge, gravity-defying boobs, usually accompanied with tight and revealing outfits. This repetitive over-sexualization of female characters has a lot to do with the fact that most designers are men and the product is directed mainly at a male audience, teenagers specifically.

Knowing this, I can understand why some people don't approve it when women cosplayers choose dress that way, because in way the cosplayers say they're fine with a POV and a culture that over-sexualizes women.

I think this situation is very different from your situation at the theater, at least as far as I know.

(... and that was way longer than -I- expected, also English is not my first language so I hope I managed to make my point clear as well)

NAOWM In reply to Miroir-Clepsydre [2013-06-23 22:07:07 +0000 UTC]

See, I don't have an issue with the tight or revealing thing, I used to, because it does objectify women, but then I learned about Topless Lady Duelling of back in the day to prevent infection to injuries.

I have an issue that not many other people are aware of that and women are drawn in ways that are appealing specifically to men and teenage boys, mostly because this really men that those writers and artists are not acknowledging a female audience that they possess.

(I also think it's interesting that while I am I reasonably well endowed lady, all my favourite character that I would love to be(I don't cosplay mostly because I have no opportunity for it where I live) tend to be flat or not Caucasian or both.)

I also think that you are pretty cool.

Miroir-Clepsydre In reply to NAOWM [2013-06-24 10:39:13 +0000 UTC]

I also have no problem with women dressed in anything tight or revealing per se. A woman can dress however she wants.
The problem, for me, arrives when men decide how a woman should dress, and in comparison to how they decide a man should dress.

In a lot of games which are popular in cosplays (Darkstalkers, Mortal Combat, Tekken) and A LOT of comic books, Most men are covered from head to toe or in a way that puts emphasis on their masculinity and strength. The females, in contrast, are dressed in revealing outfits or in a way that puts emphasis on their sexuality and beauty.

I remember being a naive 10-years-old, not understanding why her favorite super heroins had so little protection on their outfits or why-on-earth would they wear pair of heels; a 13-years-old who was a bit embarrassed to play Tekken of Soulcalibur with her friends, since her favorite female warriors had such tiny outfits, heels and huge boobs that were animated to bounce(!!!); a 16-years-old who wants to choose a character in 'Diablo' and doesn't understand why the women characters are young with revealing outfits, while the male characters are clad from head-to-toe, or have huge muscles or are even allowed to look old!

That is why I have a problem with a lot of cosplay costumes. Not because the woman wearing them wanted to get the character as accurate as possible, but because of the reason the character looks the way it looks in the first place. I can not ignore it. I don't think I should.

Oooooff, that was a lot of venting, wasn't it?
(:

I had no idea about the whole Topless Lady Dueling thing. It's really fascinating, and thanks for bringing that up.

Thanks for having that discussion with me, it's something I don't see much here at DA, so talking with you turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

NAOWM In reply to Miroir-Clepsydre [2013-06-24 18:59:14 +0000 UTC]

Really? I think you should always acknowledge at the very least a comment, especially one like this. I don't know. I like finding out what other people think. Or did you mean discussions that manage to remain calm?

I have to be honest, I love when people do take the time to make breasts move realistically, especially, that single shot in Mulan where all the men dress as girls and Ling's pseudoboob bounces like it is an actual apple in his dress. (I know that's not actually a breast, but I still appreciate it)

Also, I guess I never had the same problems as you did, because I was a huge novel reader when I was that age, so all my favourite characters looked how I imagined them.

I know I have the right, but it's wrong.

It's 'false advertising'. McDonald's can advertise anything in a wrap as healthy, but it's not.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

May-Elena In reply to MoonyGekko [2013-07-15 18:02:48 +0000 UTC]

But her body isn't a damn McDonald's meal that you are going to eat later. It's only "false advertising" if you're actually going to see her real breasts - not everyone who sees this is going to see her naked. In fact, probably nobody is.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MoonyGekko In reply to May-Elena [2013-07-19 00:43:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes, because she's using it for cosplay, for a picture, for art... Not for walking around outside and lying aboutΒ her body, and if you're doing that you pretty much are comparing yourself to a McDonald's meal.

There's no need to lie about your breast size. If you're doing it to catch attention you'd only be hurting yourself in the end of the day.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

May-Elena In reply to MoonyGekko [2013-07-19 05:49:31 +0000 UTC]

I don't see what you're saying. She's obviously not doing it to catch attention, she's doing it for cosplay.

Did you even read my original post or did you just jump straight to the defencive?

IΒ  said, only use this in cosplays, don't make your breast size so misleading.

This is the equivalent of guy walkingο»Ώ around with a smoked sausage in his pants, i.e. "false advertisement".

People are getting so angry... Seriously, it says "COSPLAY" cleavage. Sadly, some girls from anime's have HUGE breasts, and the costume doesn't fit right/doesn't look like good cosplay if you try to cosplay the character because you're lacking those impossible boobs.

Think Yoko from Gurren Lagann, any girl off of Highschool of the dead, ect. Sadly sometimes to pull off the cosplay you have to have the cleavage. While I actually don't like/would hate to have big breasts if I ever intended to cosplay a well endowed girl from an anime, I'd need this tutorial. :/ So good job.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trudos In reply to SeasaltTreats [2013-06-23 19:12:47 +0000 UTC]

You raise a really good point, but I just feel like adding an addendum. Comic books are just as popular to cosplay as anime, and you're going to have troubles finding a single comic book heroine who isn't at least a DD. (Some of them also have costumes that are too skimpy for this method to be possible, but that's another matter.)
Naturally, a lot of girls go ahead and dress up as their favorite heroes anyways, but I know my sister for one would appreciate the option of looking more completely like the character she's trying to cosplay.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SeasaltTreats In reply to Trudos [2013-06-23 19:21:49 +0000 UTC]

Exactly~ and just for another add in;

Lot's of dedicated cosplayers want to get as close as they possibly can to the character. For the people saying "You should be happy with your breasts" as a argument and so on so forth, yes, by all means girls should be happy with their bodies! However, when it comes to cosplay some want to be precise. Raising this "be happy with yourself" argument...well heck, do you raise this argument with cosplay wigs, contacts, or the every now and then body paint/fake tan some people have to use for cosplay? I really doubt it... and if you did, what's the point in trying to cosplay in general if you don't do any of those.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trudos In reply to SeasaltTreats [2013-06-23 19:44:36 +0000 UTC]

And it's not just dedicated cosplayers. Yes, technically cosplay is all about having fun, but there's something about really looking the part that turns cosplay into an artform imo. Even beginners can aim for looking as close as they can.
In cases like this, the argument of being happy with yourself only covers half the spectrum. Because it's fully possible for girls with a healthy self esteem to want to look more the part, simply for the sake of having fun.
It doesn't help that unlike the more superficial things that you mentioned (wigs, contacts, etc.), boobs are a deeply personal matter, infamous for being misrepresented in the media and being a source of angst for women of all ages. With that in mind, it's understandable how people would overreact to a post of this nature. But that doesn't change the fact that something like this can be done just for fun, and not because girls are trying to compensate for body image problems.
