Description This is a Tutorial on creating a basic presentation for portfolios and galleries. I've made this because I've seen a lot of great 3D artists present cool characters with horrible presentations which made it harder to appreciate.

This is Vol 1. Vol 2 will have Rendering Wireframes, and camera angles/animations.

Good explanation, universally applicable (Blender user, still floundering about with lighting), will use the advice sometime. Cheers!

Tutorial looks great.

One question, do you need a base for things that don't sit on the ground?

If you have a spaceship that does not have landing gear like the Enterprise, do you need a base?

You don't need a base for anything but it sure does help a lot. Even with things that fly it's a good thing to put them on something, it feels less like it's just randomly hovering there. Just have the spaceship like the enterprise hover above the base.

The base acts as a psychological grounding device. It ties your image down and makes it feel more realistic than it just randomly floating in 3d space.

Thanks, just one more question.

If you display your model in a box, will that work or you need a base?
Sorry for the questions but I am thinking about changing the way I display things.

Example:

I also do multiple views of the model in a scene too, would I need bases for each view?

No in fact in my opinion scenes are better than just a base.

I do not think a box on it's own would work. You can however do this: make a box, then clone it, (make sure it is in the same exact location). Then take the first box and remove all the faces except the top one (that is going be the reflection) then select the second box and remove the top face. Don't combine the two boxes into a single mesh, keep them seperated. That way you have to objects there, though it would look like you only got one. It's how I was able to make my character in my tutorial stand on top of a cylinder and have it reflect.

Theoretically a reflection map should work on any surface, however I do not know why I have been having problems with it, unless it is put on a plane.

You are right, scenes are better than boxes but in a scene, you may not be able to see the details on the models.

I use a box with a back, front, left, right sides for displaying models.
If the model has reflective surfaces then I copy the back of the box and put it behind the camera so the surface has something to reflect.

Again, thanks for the tutorial.

Yes, if the scene is more detailed or more contrasting than the character, then the focus goes there. It's not a bad idea to make the scene really plain, OR, if the scene is detailed, just use a gaussian blur on it and it will give "mood" to the character, but not take away from the character.
