Description
Well, I decided to give painting a try, after a few tips I got, and it's quite different than the way I usually do things... I think it's just right for this piece, but I don't know if I will be doing it often. Now, about Ben. He is my inner avatar of willpower, wisdom and power in general. He knows a lot more than he is willing to share and I think it's for the best, since I saw glimpses of what he knows and I would prefer not to thread there again... He always acts cool and superior, even though he is pretty short compared to everyone else. He speaks only by thought and is always there when I need him. He wears only that dirty battered up robe around his waist and keep his scimitar at hand, though he rarely uses it.
As for his history, this one is a bit lengthy, but I would recommend people to give it a read, since they might get a hint or two to getting in contact with their own avatars:
Back in College, times were rough and I had a lot of time on my own to think. Some of my friends and I were looking into the way to tap into the supernatural, even though it was just some basic silly research on the internet. I had a feeling there was more to it though, and I bumped into an article on the so called 'inner guide'. In short, it was a way to be able to seek advice from your subconscious self, simply by asking.
That voice in your head, that sends a thought to you when you really need it. Everyone had that experience. When they are pushing themselves, or are cornered and can't see a way out, but then they just 'hear' an advice. Some choose to ignore it and just carry on with what they are doing and end up regretting it. But most of the times, people tend to follow it and then they have a success story to tell later on. That voice was something the article was suggesting can be called at will to seek advice.
I figured, why not give it a go. There was nothing to lose. And it worked! Starting with simple yes or no questions, just thinking about the question, as if you were sending a message to yourself, and then suddenly, a response comes, but you need to listen for it. And it's very different than your own thought... it has a 'voice' of it's own, even though it's just a thought. You can tell it apart. It might be vague, but it's definitely there. After a while, I moved away from yes or no questions, and dialogues started happening, in my head, with myself, but not the usual way. 'He' was glad I finally realized his presence and was willing to communicate. Before this point, I could only hear the thoughts, but then, I could visualize a color, and it was blue.
I shared this with friends I mentioned before, and little by little, they all came in contact with their own inner guides. One of them felt red and that it was a she, other felt green and that it was a he, and the last one couldn't feel a specific color or gender. With time passing and each of us getting to know our guides, as they were apparently unique personalities, our choices started diverging... My statement on it was, and still is 'If this voice is made up, or real, as long as it is beneficial, I see no problem with going a bit mad on the side'.
Each of them, however, gave a trial. A rite of passage, if you will. For me it was being given access to knowledge I was clearly not supposed to be given access to. It drove me to question everything, on a cosmic scale... but I endured, and got past the trial. My friends, though, did not. One of them had an argument with his guide, accused him of being a parasite and a bad influence and just ditched him, preventing any further guidance. The other was given advice to go against his current feelings, because following those feelings will lead to regret. But he refused the advice and since then ceased communication with the guide. The third simply was too much of a skeptic and didn't bother pursuing the guidance.
I however, proceeded to get to know my guide better and after, I think a few months, I was able to visualize him, or at least his upper body. It was as you see it on the picture. He did not want a name, but I decided to give him one, and Ben kind of stuck. It took a lot more to get his full visage in my mind, and at that point, I already had access to the Mindscape itself, and he was no longer alone. But more about that next time.
By now, I happened to run into quite a bit of books/studies/articles regarding contacting 'inner guidance', so I am pretty sure I haven't gone crazy. Or at least as crazy as others that wrote those articles.
Hope this was insightful. If you read all of that, you deserve a cookie

Yay, I get a cookie!
This is an interesting framework within which to visualize the voices in your head and your subconscious. I'm more used to Tim Urban's framework of "Rational thought" being at the head of the control, surrounded by animals like the Instant Gratification Monkey and the Social Survival Mammoth. His version kinda lumps all of what you call guides into one entity. I like your framework as well though, and when I think about it, I have had quite a few run ins with at least one lately. Probably the Avatar of Calm - though I don't know what they look like yet.

It's all a personal view as to how you approach the subject. What is true for everyone is that there is a voice in your head, one way or another. It's up to you how to figure it out. I had a run-in with a guy who was a musician and when I spoke to him about this and he tried to figure it out for himself, he was able to 'get it' via sounds of nature, like crashing waves and wind and such, instead of visualizing it as actual characters. And I read that one guy visualized his avatars as American presidents, and he was under the impression he was just organizing his thoughts but as time went by, they started showing their personalities (being late to meetings, arguing over their views, etc) and at that point he thought he was going nuts and was like 'nope' and just stopped with the whole thing xD
When I started getting all of this on DA, I did it with hopes to get more people to think about this and possibly become more in tune, and it does seem there are quite a few people that have either already had experiences or were intrigued by the concept. So it's pretty cool

Well, it's certainly a cool way to spread the word about it!
I've thought about this stuff before as well and back when I did journaling, I ended up writing about the people I envisioned in my head. Most of them didn't really stick, but I still see my anger issues as "The Hulk in my Head."
That's more of a construct I made on my own though - the whole inner guides thing (I looked it up and seems Taoism focuses on the concept a lot as well - where the Yin part of you is your inner guide, and the Yang part of you is your inner child, and also the part of you that does the active thinking (Like what you do when you're writing)) seems more like people exploring and finding rather than inventing, and most of the times I tried to explain my mind to myself it was inventing. As in, my Yang part was trying to explain my Yin part without even bothering to look at it directly? I dunno, I'm new to this.
I'm going to keep looking into this - I'd like to be able to see who I really am deep down. Thanks for telling me about your experiences with this kind of stuff - normally I don't listen much to spirituality, but this has me interested.

Glad to hear it helps
I am unsure if this counts as spirituality though... it's kind of a part of being human, just most people... don't open up to the idea. Guess it's just the way society has programmed us.
I knew a guy that was all science and business, no time for any superstitions and such, and even he, after he had a nervous breakdown due to overwork said that before he did he heard a voice in his head. loud and clear, telling him to stop and rest since it won't end well. He ignored it, being who he is, and even after it happened, still doesn't acknowledge it as a thing he should pay attention to. Not sure where he is at now...

Ok you sound like my teacher from art school (I have like 1h and 30 min a week, she teaches us some stuff). She's also all spiritual and stuff, but she's like a really smart woman and you can tell she believes in the stuff she's saying. I like this guy.
Do you by any chance still know where to find that article on the "inner guide"?

I think just googling will find you a few with similar concepts. it was a plain text page, quite a long time ago. Hell if I could find it again.

Hello, good day, I’m from ProjectComment .
Well this is a rather good and interesting read their in finding your inner self. Some people are afraid to do such a thing. The painting for being digital looks very good I have to say. The details you’ve added in and the shading of color are all very nice. I rather like the blue aura effect that you’ve seemed to add in around them, even though the background is dark, we can tell there’s an aura about them due to the glow on their robe. I like the detail in their scimitar it looks rather nice. Also the effect surrounding their hand is a detail I rather like most of all. It seems as if they’re giving out knowledge and wisdom of sorts. The detailing is also sharp and nice, and it looks overall great.
There are a few places that you could improve though next time around. The metal on the blade could be a bit more reflective. Try finding some tutorials to help you out on that, or experiment by looking at refs. I have trouble with metal at times- believe me- but when you get it right it looks very good. J The robe could use a bit darker shading, just to help make Ben look a bit more pronounced in glowing terms, and also to make the lighting a bit more dramatic. There’s no harm in doing so. Just a tad bit, not a lot. One final bit of advice, always sign your work, I’m not sure I see it. Especially online.
You’ve done an overall great job on this, and it looks very good. I like the detail of the muscle you’ve worked on this guy, as well as the detailing in his glowing eyes, and curves of his head. The background is not fully black, which is what I like, and it’s very interesting how it appears to be of more colors than just one I take it. Almost a painterly effect. Keep up the good work, and I hope to see you do another one sometime soon. A job well done.

Thanks for the feedback!
Glad to hear you read through the wall of text and found it interesting! There will be more with every other one that comes along, but not sure when exactly.
The blade did come out pretty dusty and old, but thinking more about it, that might work to make it feel like it's worn, or hasn't seen use in a while. I do like experimenting with shiny metal whenever I can, but it seems I rarely get the chance to get experience with it, now that I think about it...
I never really thought about signing my work... If someone want's to pass it as their own, I can't stop them anyway. I guess if I signed myself they might be able to find me if they saw my work, but my work only exists on DA at the moment, so there is no finding that needs to happen to see it's mine. If you have a more solid reason for it, I would be glad to hear it.

Welcome.
Ah I see.
Signing your work, and dating it, is also a good way to show people when you did it. Not a lot of people date it though. I just do it for that reason, but if you don't feel like signing it you don't have to.

Hello from ProjectComment !
Your Ben is quite a character Although I am not here to discuss that, but just his representation. I like the dramatic foreshortening and pose, although it may seem unfit for an 'inner guide' as one might see it as more contemplative, it definitely works for the image. It is cool that you are not afraid of complex poses!
You got the proportions quite right for such a complex posture as well as semi-human anatomy, but his foremost knee seems turned horizontally. The 'spindle'-shaped kneecap should be more vertical to provide support for his frame.
I would like to focus on the color scheme here. The major problem here is local color. You have decided that the background is dark, his body in blue, his loincloth is cold brown, his sword hilt is gilt and you color them accordingly. At this point you might want to stop and think about it. Firstly, most colors in the real world have pretty low saturation. You might want to make most part of your blue figure calmer with some grays and browns, occasional violet, green or ochre (and pretty much everything you can think about). Then the background has quite high saturation too (although it is very dark and hard to see). Again, it might be a good idea to make the background calmer, lighter (although not too light: the idea of an inner guide coming out of the darkness of the mind is quite powerful) and with a bit more variance. You do not need to paint something blue in order to make it look blue. Sometimes it is enough to put something yellow in front of something gray to have a nice blue tint. The same is true for the loincloth.
Then when you color something, you put a line where a shadow should be and another line or dot for a highlight. And it looks a bit like you have not formed a shape, but drew lines on top of a shape. Then you smudge and blur it. This is again not the best way to do things. Once you have decided on your lightsource, take roughly HALF of the figure (or up to 2/3) that is farther away from the light and just fill it in your shadow color. Here his right leg should be completely covered by shadows. If you think your lighsource emits warm light, the shadows should be cooler (bluer) than the midtones, if your light itself is cool, shadows will look brownish. Then keep on working with larger shapes rather than lines. Even if the boundaries between your tones are too sharp, they would look fine if they are in their right places. (Looking through your gallery I see quite some nice cell shading, combining that with painterly style should yield some cool results!)
The key to painting metal is high contrast and reflection. Your white metal sword will never be gray (unless everything around it is gray too). In this case some portions of the sword should be deep blue (from the background), some should be brown (from the loincloth) and some blue and yellow (from the skin and eyes). And on top of all this you should have bright highlights.
Anyway, I think you have made the impact you strove to achieve, and this is the most important thing
Good luck in personal development and in your art I hope I was not too harsh O_o

Thanks a lot for all the tips!
I have never tried to work with color as much as here, so it's great to get some great advice already. I am not yet comprehending all of the things you mentioned, but I will certainly try to figure it all out. While working on this I tried a lot of new things, and I learned what worked and what didn't, so next time I will have a lot of stuff I learned to apply. I mostly messed up the process from sketch to this, and I still am pretty bad at feeling of how colors react next to one another, but I am guessing practice will get me there, eventually.
He might be a wide guide, but he does enjoy other activities once in a while. Even though he probably wouldn't admit it...

It is great that you are trying new techniques! I myself have never figured out how to work with digital painting, I just know my real life pigments and how to play around with them. You may want to try traditional painting, although it might be more demanding, for a given skill level traditional painting always looks better due to the physical nature of material.

The whole color theory thing works on any medium, and because I never was into painting, I had very little experience with it, since I worked mostly on improving my colorless skills. I am trying to get into it now, since I have the time and the means, but I don't think I will be giving traditional painting a chance any time soon.
I never could handle traditional painting... I prefer an orderly work environment and a clean process, and real painting is such a chaotic mess compared to regular drawing, I just can't get anything done with it. Digital drawing is not really different from traditional drawing but digital painting is something I can work with. If at least for the lack of a messy work area and a more forgiving process, with layers, undos and erases.

Surely color theory works in any medium, but there is practice too. For me at least an infinite supply of any color in digital painting makes me feel lost and a well-thought collection of pigments actually guides me towards nice colors.
I know what you mean. That is why I abandoned pencils and pastels: even if I am super careful, my hands are covered in charcoal dust( I prefer watercolor - nice and clean))
