Description
Well, I'm back on a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory kick, and I decided to make new character portraits for the characters. I may even do the "good guys," this time! But, of course, brats come first, beginning with Augustus Gloop. I'm very happy with how he came out here, because it's the first time I feel like I've really conveyed how... big he is. I picture Augustus as a very, very overgrown toddler; someone who's extremely coddled by his mother, with an overinflated ego to match his stomach. He's all take and no give, and basically thinks he's got a right to everything he wants (and what he wants is mostly food). He doesn't consider or care about others' feelings, only his own. His mother has given him the illusion of a world without consequence; she gets him "friends" by threatening their parents, keeps him out of trouble in school by threatening teachers and principals, and makes sure he is constantly supplied with nourishment, all with the purpose of keeping her little angel happy. But in Wonka's factory, where actions have consequences that Mrs. Gloop can't control, Augustus doesn't fare so well...
Yes, also, in my version, Augustus gets his ticket by taking the winning Wonka bar from someone else, even though he's got plenty of his own, just because it's there. I would want all four of the "bad" kids to get their tickets unfairly, though I'm still trying to work out how to do that with Mike and Violet- my Mike isn't a hacker. Also in my version, Augustus gets his stomach squeezed and stretched out in the pipe (and probably more in the Chocolate Room, who knows what happened there...) which is the only way I could think of to logically make him appear "thin" as he exited.
So I'm very happy with this one; I feel like I got him pretty much like I want him. I'd previously made him a bit too cartoonish, I think, and for the main picture here I wanted to make him look slightly more realistic, and not "cute," as a lot of people draw him. I truly did want him to look fairly repulsive. I'm very happy with the sort of piggish-excitement look he has in the lower-left-hand corner. The vignette of him drinking from the river took FOREVER, so please take a few minutes to admire it. Go on, admire it. Also, Augustus would totally be the sort to have his name sewn on the back of his underwear. Regarding the pipe, I think I would imagine Wonka telling the Oompa-Loompas to shut off the suction after Augustus gets stuck (so he could breathe) while they tinker with the pipe, which is when they would sing their song- then they would turn on a stronger suction and he would be sucked out of there. I also totally imagine him basically bawling up in the pipe, because it's the most painful experience of his life. Plus he's snot-nosed in about half of these, because it was mentioned he had a nasty cold (which he was spreading throughout this whole factory; you suck, Augustus.)
Why yes, I am a sadistic person, thank you for asking.
Also, you should check out 's depiction of the story, where the kids really are killed off and everyone's a lot more sympathetic and it basically scarred me for life but it's really imaginative and cool and you should see it. Go see it.
Characters belong to Roald Dahl (who really seemed to have something strongly against fat kids. Seriously, they get tortured in like half of his books. So, public service announcement, I don't care if you're as big as Augustus or Bruce Bogtrotter or whatever, it really actually is what's on the inside that counts. Our media has a certain thing about protagonists always having to be within the bodily "ideal," and it's not good and it's not healthy. You do you. Huzzah.)
EDIT: With a lovely Christmas gift of a tablet, I did some work on this and am quite happy with (what I think is) the improvement! Next up- Violet Beauregarde!
EDIT2: Did a small redraw on the main drawing to fix some details that always bugged me.

(The first couple of times I went to view this, dA wouldn't let me... NOW it does so I'm happy )
I like this idea for Augustus Where mine's kinda an adorable lil guy, yours is more brutish and would probably scare my Auggie hahaha I like the idea that he actually STEALS the Wonka bar that has the ticket also! Gives him a much more bullying dynamic
