Description

So this is sort of a tutorial. This is part of the mapmaking tests that I made, but this time finding a style for the coastlines isn’t so much about finding out how to make the lines, since for me a simple line dividing land and sea will do.

Instead I always had trouble making coastlines look realistic so I focused on learning features of the coastline and the processes that create them. This is a summary of some of the features (I picked the ones that are the biggest and therefore more likely to be visible at maps, although if you make the map of an entire continent they are probably too small to be seen).

I have to say, I thought that this would be boring, but man this was fun.

Something I learnt:

I hear a lot of good mapmakers say to just look at maps to get a feel for how things look in reality, but it just doesn’t work for me, at least not on its own. Just looking at something without understanding why things are the way they are just don’t help me. (I mean we look at humans our entire live, so if this would be the only thing someone would have to do, everyone should be able to draw humans perfectly, right?) Don’t get me wrong though, looking at real life reference is still required.

I guess what I am trying to say is if you’re stuck looking at reference and not learning as much as you feel you could be, try to learn why things are the way they are.

I learnt a lot, but I am not an expert by any means, so take this with a grain of salt. If you have any corrections, additions or feedback let me know in the comments.

Tips are always appreciated
