I sometimes overdo it a bit with folds, but I prefer more rather than none. Here is a recipe how to make a painty-looking fabric with some folds or how to make textures on clothes. Enjoy!
Feel free to explore this technique as well as others and find your style.

I love the guide! :iconadorablplz: But on my GIMP the smudge thing doesnt work, I tried drawing a shirt and drawing the folds and then smudged it... and it just turned out a really bad mess.

Have you locked the opacity?
Also have shades and lights in separate layers.
