Description
Here's the (almost) finished piece. Who knows if I add a few touch-ups here or there before class. I used the oil rub technique that I also used for Rodney Dangerfield. Just for clarification: this is one of the first year teachers, John Williams. He works in the 3D sculpture lab and has somewhat of a potty mouth. I was going to actually give him a toilet for a mouth, but nothing was looking right. Critique is welcome.Related content

The lighting choices, style and action really convey the character of the subject... very neat. Without needing the literal potty mouth, something about him looks very much full of humor. I love the look of the lab too... our 3D sculpture labs always look so interesting when I pass by them on the way to our boring computer rooms seems like a fun guy to hang around, that makes you (but not him) a little nervous around all that dangerous equipment.
The composition is fun and adds to the mood of the whole.. I love how the back is shaded, too. There's a great texture to this, what exactly did you use?
Hmm, I would think about a centimetre off the top could be chopped off... but there's nothing there to suggest that's necessary. The space above character is a bit empty but smoke over the light does more than enough for it. I love it, fun and full cool character study and worth a DD IMO.

Love it By John Williams, I thought you meant the classical composer (E.T., Star Wars, Jurassic Park) -- but ironically enough, they look exactly the same. Hehe

Wow! My former art teacher from last semester looks almost like this (and also has quite a potty mouth) ^_^! Wonderful rendering of the 'curses'!

He shares the name and the appearance of the musical John Williams, that's snazzy.
Either way, this rocks!

LOL!!! LOL!!! OK, I never thought I'd actually find another Ringling person on this site ever!! Let alone someone who would capture the cursing, grumpy visage that is John Williams!!! LOL! I love it!! We definitely need to chat! Check out my gallery. I graduated back in 2001 majoring in illustration and have been working at a Partyware design company since then. OIL RUB ALL THE WAY BABY! Don Brandes is the man!

Huh, for some reason I thought there was going to be more red in the final image. What color did you use as the oil base? Yellow Oxide or something?

Well for some reason the scan didn't pick up on all the color information. There was more red than this, and I did more work to it in class today before handing it in. I also added some reflective light from the torch on the right side of his face which improved it immensely. When I get it back, I'll update the image.

WOW. You are a DAMN good artist. HOLY COW. The background is technically....almost impossible-looking. I can't describe this piece well enough, therefore I now shut up.
