Description
*If you want to try this out, here is the lineart I used~ [link]I've gotten requests to make a coloring tutorial, but never made one before. I decided to color a simple headshot as an example~
This is a PHOTOSHOP CS tutorial. I used CS3, but it should apply to previous versions of PS as well.
Let me know if you have any questions~ I hope this tutorial is clear, but I'm not sure it is. haha.
Question from ~fly-again "Do you have a special mode for your brush? Multiply, normal, low opacity and flow?"
I usually use the "Airbrush Hard Round" Brush (third brush type in the default brush list). XD At least that's what its called in Photoshop. Or, the "Hard Round Brush" (first brush in the default brush list.
Opacity is usually set somewhere between 80-100% unless I'm doing something that requires a lower opacity.
Flow is usually at 85%.
All brushes are used in normal mode.
The "Airbrush Hard Round" Brush is good for coloring and shading because it responds well to tablet pressure.
I use the "Hard Round Brush" to draw lineart and also to draw detailing, such as the strands of hair in the "hair overpaint" layer.

Thank you so much ;D
I'm more of a traditional art artist and I always found it difficult to color my lineart. This will surely help me understand a bit better how the whole thing work Β

It's a pretty common style for anime/manga or other less realistic stuff.

Yeah i kinda figured out ^^
I get why it's done in animation or mangas because it saves time, but i don't get why some people do it on purpose in HQ drawings o-o

I think it's because that way you can detail both eyes, even though this drawing doesn't detail the eyes too much. IDK, I don't really run into this too much in my drawings.

Base color layer is multiply and the overpaint is normal right?

ProdigyBombay In reply to Syaraa [2013-10-26 17:49:01 +0000 UTC]
Yes! That's correct. It's how I normally color, and I might have an overlay layer or two as well over that to do color adjustments/gradients.Β

I love it <3 so love it <3 i tend to do such sketch rather than very lean ones with pen tool.I like the touch of hand drawing than clean ones sometimes. That helped me to find way to color them xD never thought to make lineart under coloring layers xD always putting lineart on top xP just this lil shift xD good tip.And i will try this way for my next drawings o3o becz i love such style and i always wanna do like that
*omg wrote alot never did that long before at all*
Thanks for ur time to read all that xD and thanks for the tutorial too

Yes! I love the multiply layer. It lets you color right on top of your lines, kind of like a coloring book.Β
