Description
*If you want to try this out, here is the lineart I used~ [link]I've gotten requests to make a coloring tutorial, but never made one before. I decided to color a simple headshot as an example~
This is a PHOTOSHOP CS tutorial. I used CS3, but it should apply to previous versions of PS as well.
Let me know if you have any questions~ I hope this tutorial is clear, but I'm not sure it is. haha.
Question from ~fly-again "Do you have a special mode for your brush? Multiply, normal, low opacity and flow?"
I usually use the "Airbrush Hard Round" Brush (third brush type in the default brush list). XD At least that's what its called in Photoshop. Or, the "Hard Round Brush" (first brush in the default brush list.
Opacity is usually set somewhere between 80-100% unless I'm doing something that requires a lower opacity.
Flow is usually at 85%.
All brushes are used in normal mode.
The "Airbrush Hard Round" Brush is good for coloring and shading because it responds well to tablet pressure.
I use the "Hard Round Brush" to draw lineart and also to draw detailing, such as the strands of hair in the "hair overpaint" layer.

It's not the picture that you provided us with, but I did use that picture quite a few times for practice. This is the first tutorial that I've used for coloring in photoshop and it has been easier ever since. Thank you.

This is a wonderful Tutorial, but what could possibly maker it better is maybe showing a screen shot of the 'Color Picker' so we can get a better idea of what colors you are using.

I think it has to do with your pen pressure setting if you're using a tablet. Set it to 100% opacity and use the first default brush available in Photoshop. This happens to me too, because my tablet is set to pen pressure sensitivity. Sometimes I have to just color something in 1 stroke w/o lifting my pen from the tablet to avoid the same problem.

oh, -not the person to ask- did you try the brush opacity? if its too light it will do that.

well, if its at a hundred it shouldnt do that...
:/ sorry, maybe its the art program itself?

well, you may have figured it out, but in case you haven't yet, make sure that not all your layers are in "multiply". When you colour on a new layer that is set to "multiply" over a layer with colour also on it, the colour on your multiply layer will change.
When you want to do the steps where you overpaint everything (meaning going over your lineart and colour from before), check to make sure that your layer is set on "normal".
... I hope what I said makes sense ;u;

delightfulanimefreak [2010-06-20 21:28:59 +0000 UTC]
what does multiply do? I usually color things in traditionally on the tablet (everything on normal layers, base color, then shades, etc.)

raindance168 In reply to delightfulanimefreak [2010-07-14 02:00:57 +0000 UTC]
The multiply setting on a layer allows all layers beneath it to show through. Very useful for blending pure colors. For instance, if a previous layer has red, and you paint blue on the multiply layer (which is above the red layer) you will get a purple tone.

oh, I see, thank you
that's good for my photoshop, I have corel painter and it has brushes that can do that without multiplying

if you are gonna have your first tablet, it is good to use a tablet with "pen pressure" but is is more expensive and advance. so if you are a starter artist choose the one that is cheaper and without pen pressure ^_^

well the best tablet for artist like you in a wacom tablet, it is a very expensive tablet but it has pen pressure.
there are different types of wacom branded tablets, wacom tablet already has a sure customer satisfaction so it is sure to give you a boost in making arts .
these are just some of the types of the bamboo tablet . a wacom bamboo, wacom intuos, and wacom cintiq the most expensive ., you already are a good artist. so I think you could handle tablets that are with pen pressure. oh but there is a cheaper brand of tablet . the Genius tablet but wacom is totally better and has more advance technology, if you like a starter tablet that is without pen pressure. I think the cheapest is the CD-r king tablet. I don't know if you have that shop in your country. but you could still find different tablets in shops in malls that have computers, CPU's Headphones and other techy things. just ask the employee if they have tablets. and ask them if they have pen pressure tablets or normal tablets that doesn't have a pen pressure.
if you wanna know more about the wacom talbet look here you could compare tablets by clicking "compare tablets
