Description *If you want to try this out, here is the lineart I used~ [link]

I've gotten requests to make a coloring tutorial, but never made one before. I decided to color a simple headshot as an example~

This is a PHOTOSHOP CS tutorial. I used CS3, but it should apply to previous versions of PS as well.

Let me know if you have any questions~ I hope this tutorial is clear, but I'm not sure it is. haha.

Question from ~fly-again "Do you have a special mode for your brush? Multiply, normal, low opacity and flow?"

I usually use the "Airbrush Hard Round" Brush (third brush type in the default brush list). XD At least that's what its called in Photoshop. Or, the "Hard Round Brush" (first brush in the default brush list.

Opacity is usually set somewhere between 80-100% unless I'm doing something that requires a lower opacity.

Flow is usually at 85%.

All brushes are used in normal mode.

The "Airbrush Hard Round" Brush is good for coloring and shading because it responds well to tablet pressure.

I use the "Hard Round Brush" to draw lineart and also to draw detailing, such as the strands of hair in the "hair overpaint" layer.

^^ maybe its not your tablet thats the problem but your tablet driver? Make sure you have the right one for your tablet and your operating system installed. Usually when my tablet is acting up, that's the problem.

Hey! Thanks so much for the help!(: I really appreciate it!
The problem actually was that it wasn't installed properly.
But I think it's all fixed now!

I know how it's like when your pen tablet hates you TT^TT
well mine actually hates paint tool sai, and it's hurtful when you can't draw in what you want.
I felt so sad until I found photoshop :'D

So, my point is, Maybeh it's the program ?

hi,
i'm still very very new to photoshop and I was just wondering what the skin over paint and the hair overpaint does. you did explain it but i'm just still very confused on what you did during those two steps. thanks

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ProdigyBombay In reply to mikki-j [2010-09-12 23:54:22 +0000 UTC]

Its just a normal layer that allows me to paint over the other layers that are underneath them.

I just call it hair overpaint because I use that layer to add detail on the hair, etc.

I'm kind of confused...The Photoshop I use is called Photoshop Elements 6.0
Is there a certain Photoshop I need to use or something to be able to do this?

Photoshop cs3 is best.

chiroxsox In reply to Ryuzai [2010-08-27 01:56:21 +0000 UTC]

It can be bought online at amazon.com, or in stores such as circuit city or best buy. You can also buy more recent versions such as cs4 or cs5, if you're willing to spend the extra couple-hundred dollars. XD;; Good luck! ^^

Actually, even though Photoshop Cs3 (and higher) *is* quite good, you don't actually need the more expensive ones to get this kind of "look" (or effect). I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, and it works just as good for drawing and getting that painting effect (and it's not as expensive )

This tutorial was unbelievably helpful. With your amazing and thoughtful tutorial, I was finally able to break through my color shyness barrier. I always found coloring daunting for the longest time until I followed your tutorial. Thank you so much for taking the time to create this. I use Photoshop CS3 as well so this was just perfect. I never realized that to achieve the coloring style I wanted that I had to use a different kind of brush. It never dawned on me to use the airbrush tool in Photoshop.

I created this here: [link] with the aid of your tutorial. I'm going to go back and add a background and fix her belt a bit more, but for the first time in a long while, I'm actually pumped to start coloring again. Thank you.

;-; i tried twice with my own drawing and got part way through colouring, then saved it so i could finish it later, but BOTH ended up as a .png Dx

and i dont want to draw anymore linart, i just want to practice colouring xD
but i dont know how to use yours, since its a PNG and i dont know how to turn it into linart xD(I'm using Paint tool sai,)
Do you still have the PSD file for it so i cna use that for the linart?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ProdigyBombay In reply to Shomiku [2010-09-12 23:55:56 +0000 UTC]

It shouldn't save as a .png unless you're using a trial version of sai and your trial version has already run out. If you have the full version of sai, you should be able to save a version with all your layers.

did you draw the lineart and scan it in, or draw it directly in photoshop?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ProdigyBombay In reply to spencer333rose [2010-07-27 21:57:05 +0000 UTC]

For more complicated pictures, I usually draw it by hand and scan it. In this case, I drew it directly in photoshop.
