Alright, so i had Elly from Xenogears right up my queue of game fan art...that was untill i started playing Final Fantasy VII

I was too young back when the game launched to get myself in JRPGs — too young in fact i wasn't even alive at the time!
Fast foward two decades and having finally completed Xenogears, i'm left looking for another RPG to fill the void and those were pretty big shoes to fill! As a wave of trailers for the upcoming Final Fantasy remake came, i decided to give the original game a go.

Admitedly, my expectations going in were cloudy, given what i had absorbed from other sources of media of media growing up. From Kingdom Hearts, i gathered that i didn't knew any of these character from the disney movies and that Cloud and Sephiroth's had a long lasting bickering about...the darkness? Dissidia12 was a cool fighting game, but i didn't dig deeper into the story mode and i didn't knew what to make from Advent Children at the time. Lastly, i've heard that Xenogears was based on a early draft of the game, which was a totally different ball park! One thing i knew was that one major plot point, because everyone and their dog knows what's coming at the end of disc one. That said, i was very surprise as to how tonally different the game is from what i came to believe!

For instance, the whole experience was way more goofy than i could have anticipated. A squatting minigame, becoming a frog in the middle of a battle, some really quirky NPCs and pretty much everything about the Golden Saucer! I was most shocked as to how the main cast's potrayals differs vastly from the forementioned pieces of media, specially Cloud and Aerith's. Often vaguely depicted as saint and pure, Aerith really surprised me with her upbeat and sassy personality and her headstrong attitude that often put herself in harm's way for others. As for Cloud — oh, Cloud. He really grew on me!

Often what i though was a vanilla, fit-all protagonist quickly grew on me as i began unfolding his backstory and the final square off with Sephiroth is, in my opinion, one of the best delivered catarsys in a game i have played in awhile! All in all, i really enjoyed my time with Final Fantasy VII and i really hope i can bodyslam more bosses in the upcoming remake

Eu era muito jovem na época em que o jogo lançou pra me chegar nos JRPGs - tão jovem na verdade que eu nem tava vivo na época!
Duas décadas passam e tendo finalmente completado o Xenogears, eu procuro outro RPG para preencher o vazio que o jogo deixou, e olha que não ia ser fácil! Com essa onda de trailers do remake de Final Fantasy, decidi tentar o jogo original.

Minhas expectativas eram meio nubladas, dado o que eu havia absorvido de outras fontes de mídia crescendo. Com Kingdom Hearts, eu percebi que eu não conhecia nenhum desses personagens dos filmes da Disney e que o Cloud e o Sephiroth tiveram trocavam tapas por causa da...escuridão? Dissidia12 era um jogo de luta muito legal, mas eu não me aprofundei no modo história e não consegui entender nade do Advent Children na época. E como a cereja do bolo, ouvi dizer que o Xenogears foi baseado em um esboço inicial do jogo, o que deixava as coisas ainda mais confusas! Uma coisa que eu sabia era esse 'plot twist' da trama, porque todo mundo já sabe o que está por vir no final do primeiro disco. Dito isso, fiquei muito surpreso com o quão diferente o jogo é do que eu acreditava!

Por exemplo, toda a experiência foi muito mais cômica do que eu pensava! Um minigame de agaichamento, virar um sapo no meio de uma batalha, alguns NPCs realmente bizarros e praticamente todo o 'Golden Saucer'! Fiquei especialmente chocado com a forma como a caracterização do elenco principal difere muito das mídias mencionados acima, especialmente no caso de Cloud e Aerith. Muitas vezes vagamente descrita como santa e pura, Aerith me surpreendeu com sua personalidade otimista e atrevida e sua atitude obstinada que muitas vezes a colocava em perigo pelos os outros. Quanto a Cloud - poxa, Cloud. Eu gostei mesmo desse cara!

O que eu achava que era um o protagonista nutella de todo, caiu no meu agrado quando mais e mais pedaços de sua história de fundo começaram a se encaixar e a última batalha com Sephiroth é, na minha opinião, uma das melhores catarses dentro um jogo que já joguei em um bom tempo! No fim das contas, eu realmente gostei de Final Fantasy VII e espero realmente poder dar suplex em mais chefões no remake
