Description
Judas the Black LabWatercolor
8x10"
This is a commission I finished just tonight. I've been working on it for three days and I pronounce it finished. By far, this is my favorite pet portrait I've completed. My goal for each piece of art is to feel like I've grown as an artist in some way or another. I'm pushing to make the little bits of change I do, become visible in each piece I create. Basically, I want each piece to look better than the last.
Judas, unfortunately has cancer and his owner has had to make the tough choice to put him to sleep. She wanted a nice picture to remember him by. I thought the photo I worked from would be perfect and she agreed.

Thanks so much. Watercolors are great fun to play with. All I did was start with light shades of black on the dog's fur, built it up some in deeper shades, and then added burnt sienna and ultra marine touches to make him look more realistic. I did a final layer of fur texture to make sure his fur looked more detailed. For the background I used some crayon resist and seran wrap techniques to make the water. Overall it was pretty fun and easy to do. I'll be sure to visit your gallery.

gosh that's so sad! it's such a lovely portrait of an admired pet! you really pulled it off, when i read about what happened to the dog i looked back at the picture and noticed the dogs eyes and it really pulls on the heart strings!

yes it really is a sad story but unfortunately when doing commissions of pets, I run across lots of tributes of this sort. Thanks for the comment!

Thank you. For years I was too intimidated of watercolor to pick up a brush. I tried it when I was a kid and thought it was the hardest thing ever. But since being in college I've found watercolor an extremely satisfying medium that I don't use that often. Unlike pencil, there always seems to be an element of surprise when using watercolor. You never know when something isn't going to quite work out like you had planned.
