A birthday picture for LJ friend ispellit. Why the hippo? She has a thing for hippos.I died the death of a thousand cuts doing this cos I'm shite at backgrounds and I had to use grass to try and cover up the inherent shiteness. Eurgh!

I think the background looks great, to be honest. If you're bad at them, it's not noticeable, at least to the inexpert eye, if that counts for something. And it made me LOL, poor hippo!

Wow, the coloring on that hippo is spot on perfect! How did you achieve that textured look on the skin? Do you use a special brush in photoshop?

I had to go back and look at this as it was ages since I did it! From the look of it I used a spatter brush for the texture. My partner has given me a bunch of Photoshop brushes so I'm not sure if a spatter brush is standard or not. These days I don't often use more than about 4 brushes.

I love hippopotamuses (-mi?) too! Enormous, awkward-looking, ugly and deadlier than a crocodile. (And I only just realized that barring the 'enormous' bit, they've that in common with our beloved Potions Master.) Plus, the inherent comedy of the sorts of things used in potions is so rarely highlighted.
