Description A Flygon I've been intermittently colouring. This is my first attempt at drawing one, and it's actually quite fun to draw - I have two other sketches that I may or may not have drawn in the middle of some very boring parts of class (though I was listening to what was being said, don't worry...).

The shading's a little off. I think I'm going to find a better way to shade than dodging and burning the socks off something, sometime.

Very nice! Clear, smooth, vivid, great coloring and lineart. Even the shading's pretty good, though I hope you find a better way to do it.

Thanks! I've discovered lately that Flygon are extremely fun to draw, actually - I might do another one in a completely different pose after exams. I'll try a different shading method, too!

I'll look forward to seeing what I come up with, too! Guess what? About three and a half weeks, maybe, and then YEAR ELEVEN IS OVER! WHOOO!

Year Eleven is now OVER! Well, at least classes are. Now I just have to survive exams and Yr. 12 orientation (hello, Yr 12 hoodie! ) and then, finally, summer will come...

Wow, cute. Very clean and nice shading job! Awesome job, Pseudinymous!

...just so you know, you'll have to pick a short, easier-to-spell nickname soon or I'm going to create one for you. I love your name, but I can't spell it for the life of me.

Thanks so much, Cori!

Ahh, yes, t'is a little long, isn't it? You can call me Pseudi, if you like. I s'pose it doesn't help that "Pseudinymous" makes use of a UK-style suffix, either, does it?

Pseudi?

...we shall see. I have a feeling I'll come up with something appropriate. Like Pseu... although the u and the e are backwards for it to really be 'sue'.

Huh. *contemplates*

It looks adorable! The coloring looks good, and you did well with the dodge and burn. other coloring techniques in photoshop take SO LONG. It's silly.

Pseudinymous In reply to secret-spy-guy [2010-10-17 02:27:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yes, spot on about other colouring techniques - plus, they can be finicky and hard to get right when dodging and burning can generally look very good and smooth. Still want to learn another technique, however, so I can have some variation.

It's hard to go wrong with dodging and burning. Other methods are just so time-consuming. I've been practicing with one using the eye dropper tool, and an low opaque brush.
It takes FOREVER. XD

Pseudinymous In reply to secret-spy-guy [2010-10-20 22:35:16 +0000 UTC]

Unless you're inexperienced and don't use large enough brushes. My shading got instantly better as soon as I started using huge ones, because it comes off so much smoother. I might try something like that. Time consuming, yes, but how are the results?

secret-spy-guy In reply to Pseudinymous [2010-10-29 03:54:01 +0000 UTC]

True. True. The huge ones do work better. I'm still trying to perfect the technique, but I think it's possible to make it look very good. It just takes a lot of practice.

Pseudinymous In reply to secret-spy-guy [2010-11-02 11:22:34 +0000 UTC]

It does, it's just difficult to avoid that ashy blackening effect when you just want a darker tone of the colour instead. This is why I want to change techniques, mainly.

I rather like the shading on this.
If you want to try other modes, I suggest you experiment. Or search for a tutorial.

I once read that doodling in class helps you concentrate. Because it stops your mind from going "Too boring, shut down and sleep" without distracting you so much that you don't pay attention. Unless you are like me.

Pseudinymous In reply to icecheetah [2010-10-17 02:23:25 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I was planning on doing a bit of both, actually, and see if I can't find something that works well for me. Until then, it'll be the old dodge-n-burn, but it'll be good to try a new technique.

I read that too, but it often translates to teachers as "not paying attention". It works for me, and so I believe I'll begin making a habit of it.

icecheetah In reply to Pseudinymous [2010-10-17 11:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Yep, see what works!
Also, look at images you like and try and guess how they do theirs. I only really improved my shading after observing how it was done in El Goonish Shive .

Yeah, that is annoying how they think that.

I've sort-of moved on to working on cell-shading, but I would certainly like to practice smooth shading sometime. I guess I'll find some picture sometime when I feel like going back to my old ways.
