Description I haven't submitted much dino art for a while, so I uploaded this depiction of theropod family life that I drew last year; however, I decided to color it this week. The picture portrays a mother troodonid dinosaur removing termites from a mound using a stick, meanwhile her hatchlings eagerly watch with the anticipation of a quick scrumptious snack. The use of a stick prevents soldier termites from attacking the dinosaurs as they chow down on worker nestmates. Since Troodontidae represent perhaps the smartest of cretaceous beasts, I like to believe that some troodons are akin to some clever birds we see today and learned to use tools for finding food.

Hope you like this pic, I experimented a little more with lighting effects.

Enjoy,

Blair

Beautiful and quite accurate, as well as excellent desktop wallpaper

Oww wow! Thanks Silveressa, I'm glad you liked the picture, and I agree wholeheartedly with you-I too cannot stand putting those watermarks in pictures, they can really ruin the viewing enjoyment on dA.

Again, thanks for the very kind words

That's an excellent idea. Wasn't TroΓΆdon one of the smartest dinosaurs of all times? At least I seem to recall it having an unusually large brain. So they might very well have used tools like this. Lovely painting as always.

Thanks,

Sadly, we may never really know what dinosaurs were capable of, it,s fun to hypothesize how they might have behaved.

I am glad you you like the picture, I just can't shake the cuteness factor.

Best wishes,

Just a theoretical question (because after all, I am broke until at least this fall) but I wonder if you'd ever considering offering commissions?

Hi Isak,

I never could charge for my paintings, I'm currently working on a children's book and so I have a little bit of a backlog of projects. But I will take requests, if you don't mind waiting a bit. Please, let me know what kinda picture you'd like,

Again thanks for the wonderfully kind words,

Take care,

Blair

That's very exciting about the children's book. XD I'm sure it's going to be amazing.

I don't really have a specific request in mine, but I'd love to see more Australopithecus from you, especially children. I love the way you draw pre-human people. Most drawings I've seen of Australopithecus makes them look really brutish and ugly, but you have a very sensitive way of drawing them that makes them look very darling and sweet.

Great, original idea. And not that far-fetched... Many avians have been shown capable using tools. Some parrots, corvids and passerines are noted as tool users
I also like the lush green environment and the light coming through the foliage in this work, very naturalistic... although your way of illustrating the animals is more cartoonish.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Psithyrus In reply to tuomaskoivurinne [2011-04-02 23:17:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Tuomas,

I am honoured you liked the idea; the forest background started out very disappointingly, but as I added more layers, the colors and depth really improved. I just can't shake drawing cute cartoony dinos, I've been doing it so long I am going to draw some serious paleo scenes based of some local dinosaur fossils found in North Alabama. I can't wait to try my hand at skeletal reconstructions.

Take care and all the best.

Awesome artwork, and lovely concept. Also, mum's fur boots rock. Having fluffy legs does seem to be the fashion among paravians these days... (BTW, with that colour pattern, the legs totally remind me of a draught horse. Is that just my weird mind, or did I stumble on your inspiration? )

Are you gonna kill me if I point out that the wing feathers seem to be in the wrong place? From all I've heard and from all the wings I've seen, some of them should be coming off the second digit. Yours seem to stop at the wrist.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Psithyrus In reply to Sinande [2011-03-28 23:46:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Sinande,

I am glad you liked mum's fuzzy feet. I did indeed think of a clydesdale's feathers as a model for the feet. Since these troodons live in the north, I thought they ought to have insulation on the feet like that of a ptarmigan's leg or snowy owl's leg. I made sure her toe claw was exposed and ready for use. I love learning more about dinosaur anatomy, i never gave much thought to the position of the feathers and digits. I'm glad that I learned something new about theropod anatomy,

many thanks and...

all the best,

Blair

So the horse association wasn't just me.

I learned the little dinosaur anatomy I know by lurking on DinoForum, but I'm always happy to pass it on Naked hands are a very common error, so it's way too easy to pick up by osmosis. I'm mighty glad you didn't pick up bunny-handed raptors!

Gorgeous lighting and background. The scenery is so realistic - I can really imagine this scene.

I would also like to think that these dinosaurs would act in this way - using simple tools like sticks to get at their food. If birds do it now then it is quite possible that more intelligent species of dinosaur could too!
