I'll get to Sonic Forces later. I've been watching comic videos on youtube for a while now and I ran into this, and while watching I thought of Sonic afterwards and this hit me.Here's the video, not sure if this was the right cover or not, it's what I got when I searched the title. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX3oar…

Sega plays things far too safe with Sonic, they are unwilling to make something like SatAM ever again because they are more obsessed with maintaining Sonic's image as the company mascot than being innovative with him. Also the whole "children are dumb" mentality that big corporations have anymore.

The Sonic series will NEVER have any good dinosaur stories like IDW's Teenage mutant ninja turtles did with Turtles in Time

I doubt that Sonic will EVER have a story as good as IDW's Turtles in Time story

You wouldn't even have to go as far as TMNT for "edgy and convoluted". Anyone who screams "2 dark 'n edgey 4 kidz" at Sonic Forces, to name the most recent example, would have to do the same thing to games like Super Paper Mario(tragic love story that almost results in the destruction of every single world in existence and the main characters are sent to hell by a crazy clown), Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask(the apocalypse is triggered because the Skull Kid was misunderstood and possessed by a demon and Link gets cursed in the beginning), Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2(post-apocalyptic future caused by time itself falling apart in the main story and in the post game Darkrai tells the protagonists to kill themselves or else the world will be destroyed) and Kirby: Planet Robobot(a computer is created to bring back the antagonist's daughter, but destroyed his mind and then tries to wipe out all organic life in the universe and Metaknight gets roboticized after trying to fight them) or else they'd come off as massive hypocrites. And these games were pretty successful and are rather highly regarded in the gaming community, not to mention(at least in the first three cases as KPR is a very recent game), most people who played these games as kids have very fond memories of them. Many kids love edgy stuff EVEN IF it's considered ridiculous by adults, hence why there are so many overly "edgy" OCs and fanfics. I understand having the opinion that for example, they didn't really do much with the dark elements in Forces so they were kind of pointless(like the information about Sonic "being tortured" or Tails "losing it" when it doesn't affect the characters at all) or Infinite's backstory was poorly handled(come on, at least put it in the actual game), but from what I've seen so far, there isn't really anything in this game that would be that much darker, edgier or convoluted than your average Mario RPG. Which is a lot better than the stuff we've gotten since Colors, but they could do so much more and, most importantly, BETTER! It doesn't even have to be particularly dark, just focus on writing a good story for once.

Oh yes, Kirby Planet Robobot totally! I mean that one felt so much like a Sonic Game! Like the "Roboticized" environments looked so much like something out of a Sonic CD Bad Future Stage, Haltmann being a lot like Eggman, the Access Ark being similar to Space Colony ARK/The Death Egg, heck even the whole Last Boss Battle against Star Dream felt so much like something out of a Super Sonic Last Boss with the pure epicness!
Oh sure when Kirby does it, it is instant good, but when Sonic does it, it's the worst thing ever?!

The "It's for kids" argument is just an excuse people use for the sake of not letting kids have anything interesting to enjoy. In times like these, a quote from Walt Disney always comes up on my mind: "You're dead if you aim for kids." -Walt Disney

I actually have an idea for a story arc in my comic Sonic Odyssey inspired by the plot of that Turtles arc. Basically it would have Sonic and Tails encountering this mad scientist (an OC of mine) who ends up transporting them to the planet of the Seederins from Sonic X (before any of them become the Metarex) and end up helping them out with a war with I don't know either the Black Arms or the Drakon Empire (from the Fleetway comics), I'm still trying to iron it out.

I've seen Comments on YouTube duke it out for eons just yelling at the other to prove that their opinion is wrong about Sonic the Hedgehog. I'm not saying one is wrong & the other is right, but it's how the actual THING comes out & chooses to do what people either hate or love that i'm all: "It's not that Sonic can't be Dark. It's about how he does it." & i really don't like how games like Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic Forces do the dark theme. Just a bunch of dull conversations that gives Sonic 06 a run for it's money. (I said dull conversations, not the games themselves.)
"BUT IT'S FOR KIDS! WHY WON'T YOU LISTEN TO ME YOU PATHETIC NERD?!"
I don't know. Because kids can be pathetic nerds too?

Thing is you're not criticizing them for being dark, you're criticizing them for not being as engaging as they should be. That's valid but that can go either way regardless of tone, that in itself is not the tone.

For one it's nerds screaming that anyway, most normal people don't say that about Sonic. There's also the fact that this argument is used to defend childish tones in games like Colors and Lost World, and for a subject that was never the case until Sonic Colors, which until then these same people were bad mouthing kids for like the "dark age" games.

The whole "It's for kids" arguement shouldn't hold much wait in this digital age where everything is accessible to literally anyone who has access to stable internet.

And the fact that the argument was disproved more then 30 years ago, where many cartoons were ok for kids to watch and had plenty of action and not being childish.

Today that's really what people want. They want "It's for kids" to equate to childish and un-challenging.

Once you think about it, the majority of people who use this as an excuse to defend dumb shit often indulge in it, much like with Sonic. It's not that kids want their shows to be childish and un-challenging, not once have I heard a kid say they want this as many of the play COD and GTA, the grown ass people defending the material in question want it to be so.
At the end of the day it's for their own pleasure, their just using kids as a defense because deep down they know they can't defend the material for being lacking. I would assume this, again, because kids don't ask for that shit, regardless if they get into it or not, and the fact that they like the material. Going back to Sonic, those who often say "it's for kids" usually are the ones who praise lighter toned stories despite them constantly saying the story doesn't matter.

Holy crap you're actually right mate . It's mostly the adults who complain about how "too dark" the series is or how the comics were back in the day. It's a weird dichotomy as it feels like when people say that it's because they want to hide insecurity to negate the idea that something can be a certain tone regardless of how it is.
