Yes, I believe I remember reading that all species of the so called "Bone crushing" Hyenas had stronger jaws than both the wolves and lions of their time, including today. Spotted hyenas and their prehistoric ancestors have much thicker teeth (rather than sharp) and an almost absurd amount of muscle in their neck to deliver the power. This is because back then, hyenas where mostly scavengers due to their body style. Today they have evolved to be hunters.

But as with most hunters in Africa (in general everywhere I guess), they prefer fresh meat, but wouldn't pass up scavenging if its easier to find food that way.

Although I have gripe with nature channels on how they give lions all praise and glory. They're cool, yes. But they steal hyena kills a lot of the time. I don't see how lions deserve that much praise. Hyenas need to be given more spotlight then being designated as the meanies of the Serengeti.

I agree. unfortunately as a fan of pitbulls and rats as well as hyenas, i've become use to all the hate and bias :/

I deal domestically with my love for wolves. One side tells me how evil they are for hunting deer, even when I start explaining how and why they hunt, ow the packs are structured and overall behavior towards humans.

It's hard to believe how hard headed folks can get when they're really uninformed.
