Description
I've been studying birds for a planned animation project that I'm currently storyboarding, and I figured that I should do a few test animations before diving into the bigger project. The lack of direct reference is pretty apparent to me, but I was surprised that it looked like a bird at all! After I break it down and add inbetweens I'll post the finished test. But oooooh man, my workflow went to hell after not touching animation for so long, not to mention my sense of timing and spacing [._.]
The plan now is to never stop animating for that long ever again! But.... we'll see.
Made using Krita!

Oooo loving this! I struggle with bird movements when playing with animation. Good luck on your bigger project!

Thanks! Beyond simple flapping animations, birds definitely get a bit tricky. Their wings fold in interesting ways

You're welcome! They do and they can be surprisingly flexible with wing position.

This is really good, are you gonna add the in-betweens?

Yup! I'll do a second run through using the current keys as guides, but they'll probably change a bit too. Maybe add a bit more feather detail while I'm at it

Thanks, although the hard part will be making it look good with the inbetweens~

Nah if the motion is good in the keyframes, it will be good, but if you make lots of inbetweens it'll be hella long

I to tend to stretch the timing out when I add inbetweens, but I'm gonna try and stick to the way it is now and keep the animation snappy and quick(ish). It is just a test after all

I've done a bunch of 4 frame pixel walk cycles lately, snappiness is very major

Right, adding more frames would just cramp the style

Whenever I watch a disney movie with 24 fps frame by frame animation I weep for the poor animators

They had the luxury of dedicated inbetweeners though. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford that too~

inbetweeners are basically slaves though

If it's an unpaid internship it might be
I wouldn't mind inbetweening at a studio if I was paid properly, especially if I could learn from skilled animators.

Idk not really what I'd want to do for life, especially for animations I'm not interested in. I guess as a temporary rookie job it's okay but by my experience you don't learn much from those. I've done a few weeks of work in a metal workshop, only got to do the most basic stuff and didn't learn anything.

Yeah, fair enough. I'd at least like to think that there are some studios around that would use inbetweening as preparation for more creatively fulfilling jobs, but that's probably just me fantasizing~

I'm sure inbetweening is a rookie job and there are not many animation veterans who only do that. The point is, their first priority is to get some inbetweens, educating you is maybe a side effect.
Man i'd love to lead some animation projects but honestly I don't see myself as a storyboardist or key animator, i really wouldn't like doing art as a job in general, wish I did
