Description The Cat and the Fiddle.

Thomas plays a mournful melody in remembrance of his beloved soulmate who was caught by a string maker only days before. Unable to bear the weight of grief at losing her, the last thing he could do was steal the strings woven from her gut. He now plays to remember her as they can be together in song.

Layout assignment. Photoshop.

To go overboard on the idea that the strings are made from the guts of his soulmate would be stating the obvious, to keep it low-key and somber makes the story more of a sad realization that the actual morbidity of the act has been accepted as an unfortunate commonplace. I feel that if I were to focus entirely on the morbid would make the story more like any other story that you might find in a hot topic sold comic strip. A slight twist of morbid irony played for subtlety in order not to disrupt a sad but somehow beautiful love story.

Depressing and creepy, indeed, but there's something very beautiful about this. The perspective and layout are fantastic, and the moonlight through the run-down rooftops creates a wonderfully solemn mood. I like the rough painted texture too, giving it all an "authentic" illustrated look. Great picture!

I didn't want to be the one to point it out but... oh well; *whispers* catgut was PROBABLY never made from cat intestines.

*cough*

beautifully melancholic story though. Ooh, prints available. Do they come with the story I wonder?

pupukachoo In reply to ShardAerliss [2010-10-05 00:23:14 +0000 UTC]

I know that, but from a simple storytelling point of view you can probably understand why I would choose a cat (which is also more familiar to humans and thus more sympathetic) as well as the play on words- perhaps in Thomas' world the catgut is made from actual cat. Storytelling comes from imagination, if it just echoed real life there wouldn't be any fun left in it

I've thought of using this story for something on down the line... I do have to do a short comic story for my graphic novel class, though I was intent on using my B-movie parody, i'm having trouble making it work... so maybe I'll do the story of Thomas and his soulmate (whatever her name is- Bob probably)

Someone had to sacrifice themselves and say it. I am a martyr to the cause of pedantry! XD

If storytelling only ever reflected the real world all we'd have is made-for-TV movies. Can you imagine?!

That's a world Idon't want to live in! ;_; and haha sorry if I sounded short, I have this terrible pet peeve (probably from my mother, love her, but she loves to be a "knowitall" when yuo already know it XD) about being told things I already know, so even though I try not to I think I always sound a little put off when going "NO I KNOW :V" hahaha.

Demon-Prayer In reply to ShardAerliss [2010-10-05 00:15:57 +0000 UTC]

your right, it wasn't. It was made from cattle intestines and the like (you probably wouldn't be able to make much of it out of a cat anyway). catgut = short for cattle gut.

Very poetic and beautiful picture. Though 'Cat Guts' is a bit of misnomer as the strings were actually made from sheep's guts.
