I'm not sure if I'm supposed to upload this but yeah >w>It's a background I did for a collab type thing as a test to see if I could be the background artist for a comic by *Stoateh
there's supposed to be a character on that little hill type cliff thing, I just removed the shadow because the character is just a sketch. (and that's why the patch of ground above it is a little unfinished because there's supposed to be something blocking it >3> )
It came out well for my first time drawing something like this, little to no references used, and one texture for the big roundy lines in the ground because I cannot draw that for the life of me.
Its also a LOT bigger than I'm used to drawing in, so I hope it looks okay xDDD;

POSITIVES
I'm really loving the choice of colors.... in some cases people really have a problem with this, but I think you nailed it. The red around the sun/orange seeped on the ground gives it a very warm and calming feeling, almost as if you could feel the light breeze of the desert air.
The ground; wow. That design seems to fit your style to a T. I like the variety of colors, once again, people have problems visualizing a realist textured ground, because they do not fully understand that it is more then just one color. But all in all, the ground has to be my favorite part of all (:
I also enjoy the effects you tried out; The distant mountain things (forgot what they were called lol) are a nice touch (:
NEGATIVES
You could use alittle more blur.... but not at the same time. Some areas need to be abit more defined. And desert air might be deprived of water, but even then, when something is seen in a distance, it some how becomes less.. visible... I wouldn't say blurry, but more like a thin layer of missed. If you were going for a sunRISE, then there would be a greater amount of missed, causing the mountains to be less visible.
Also, the rock in the front.... I have to be honest, but where were you going with that? It looks as if you pasted paper together... the top of the rock-thing doesn't blend with the sides... when you're trying to make a rule of thirds like the one in your picture, try shading it to where it doesnt seem to balg out of the picture and seem rounded in some way.... heres a really good example: [link] see how it flows together? try working with harder edges too... I know it seems scary because the harder the edge, the more detailed you have to get, but it is very good practice. All in all you did a very nice job <3

Abuse the dodge/burn smudge and gradient tools 8| that'sallIdoreally. oh, and learning how to lock layers has saved my life with backgrounds! 8D

I know, and you aren't done either (the rock is bugging me, the top part seems to have too much of a ledge for a natural looking formation o3o) but I can't draw backdrops to the extent that what I do try ends up looking uglier because of how hard I try.

Inspiriation chimes in the most unexpected places c8 you never know when you'll suddenly get an idea for another comic~ or maybe instead of turning it into a comic perhaps write it down? not everything has to be a comic to be good c8
