Description
...down a dragons throat that is. That is definitely the 'Im going to eat you' face.
This was rendered for 5 hours and 15 minutes in Lux render, my longest render to date. There are a few mistakes in the poses, and it should have rendered even longer to get rid of the few remaining fireflies, but I do consider it my most successful lux render so far.
Lights work so much differently than in daz, so lighting setup is a lot harder. To test your lights in daz, you have to spot render. With luxus (the plugin I use), I can do that, but the scene still has to be exported to be spot rendered, which takes a lot of time. So I cant test my lights, Im just winging it and hoping it works.
I think I will make a mini series out of this. Only 2 images long, and will be rendered in daz, not lux. I don't want to wait another 5 hours for a render . That will be worked on tomorrow.

To most people stopping at floors to pick up others is an irritation... for a dragon it's like stopping at a buffet floor each time. ^..^
Love his expression, and the pun.

That's one of the things I like about Indigo and etc - is that the rendering plugins I have are either fully integrated into Cinema 4D (Mental Ray, Vray, Indigo...) or have a 'Fast preview' option available like Maxwell. Maxwell I still have to export the scene into its own application, but it has a preview option available which returns a very accurate result of the scene in a matter of seconds, complex scenes taking maybe a minute or two to clear up. The final render however, does take a lot longer
Mrrr... Your renders keep making me want to do some of my own. But blah, going into 3D has been very tough for me as of late, and I don't have much human models so creatures is all I can really do (And Genesis figures don't work with the Poser Plugin I have.)
Sad face.

Gaa I wish I had Indigo! Still have to check out Maxwell. I want something that uses the graphics card and works with daz, even if that means exporting as an .OBJ and importing into the renderer.
I hope you try it again though, your 3D stuff always turns out amazing.
Can one of your programs import .OBJ or wavefront object scenes? Daz can export object scenes, so maybe pose the human (and other creatures) in daz, import it, then send to the renderer.
I know Genesis needs a DSON exporter to work in poser, but I don't know how going from plugin to plugin would work.

Maxwell (Next Limit is the maker) is.... Um... Expensive
I got it at around $620 or so and that was with a discount! It's actually not as expensive as one would think, given its capabilities AND what it's often used for (Laboratory stuff where their work DEMANDS utmost and absolute physical accuracy with light - not just "Mostly correct" algorithms that many engines use.)
However, it does have a standalone 'Studio' version that you can import stuff into, so you don't need an exporter to use it. Makes things easier yes, but it's not needed. ...Though I'm not sure about lights and stuff? Maxwell uses physical polygons to emit light instead. Then again so does Indigo, but it converts lights into polygonal meshes during the exporting. Maxwell needs it even before the export - it refuses to recognize any computer-generated lights.
If a 3D application can't import OBJ files then it does not deserve to be recognized as such
Of course C4D can import them :3 It just... Doesn't do it very well v12 I still have a plugin for advanced control over importing OBJ files, which I use often before moving them to r13 for modification and/or rendering.
What I'm saying is that my situation hasn't changed much from before: I still have Hiro 3, David, Mike/Vicky 4, and one (poorly made) hair prop to split between all of them. Most of my clothing content is either scattered or not installed, and I can count on my fingers how much I have (About 12 total).
The reason I brought up Genesis is because that's all the new props and characters are being made for, so they're useless to me. Sure, the clothing and props I can import and adjust to my needs since I have access to modeling tools, so I don't need some $50 converter to "Make Vicky stuff work with Genesis, and Genesis 1 stuff to work with Genesis". Cinema 4D's paying for itself right there, in that I'm not restricted by these minor things :3

Sounds like indigo is the better choice for me (at this stage of my experience). If only it had a daz plugin.
You must have a lot of fingers
There are still a lot of clothing for m4 and v4 (mostly v4, and mostly skimpy stuff as well...) but the generation 4 stuff should still work with genesis 1. I still recommend genesis 1 over 2 because of compatibility.
Maybe buy 1 clothing item or shape or figure and only use that. Maybe all your humans are robots, or they all wear the same uniform, or maybe they all have fur or scales instead of skin so none of them technically need clothes.
I wouldn't worry about the hair, I only have a handful of hair options myself.
And of course, humans are used all the time. I get a lot of requests for animals voring animals, maybe try some of that?

I doubt it'll ever get a DAZ exporter unless someone in the D|S community felt like writing one. =/
With 'Reality' and Octane exporters out, why would anyone bother with an Indigo one? LuxRay is free, Indigo isn't. That pretty much nukes any incentive the D|S community would ever have for getting it, since it'd involve the purchase of something about as expensive as D|S Pro.
From my time on the D|S Sub-Forums, I've learned that the community generally ignores (And is sometimes even hateful of) anything that costs more than $40 unless it's D|S related. Since Indigo is like $200+ for it's "simple" version, that would turn off most if not all of the DS users just by mentioning that. The exporter would need to be free to get anyone to consider that.

But Octane is a few hundred dollars as well, and is limited by the graphics card. From what I understand, Indigo is just a little more and can handle larger scenes. The cheaper version of Indigo is less than Octane actually.
I guess it just depends on how much people are willing to expand. Sure I shy away from more expensive purchases right now, but as I get better I will want to get some more expensive programs.
Oh, and is Carrara worth it? Or save the money for something better?

A few years ago I would say yes, Carrara is more than worth it. Now? I'm not so sure.
From the last time I checked in on it (Before the advent of Genesis 1) it had these pros and cons:
Pros:
-It's own rigging system (Slightly more advanced than Poser's and D|S's. This was shot down as a con though by many in the D|S forum)
-A simple way to save fully premade characters and even full scenes. Just drag and drop it into the content browser and it's saved forever.
-Can utilize 3D Painting (Great way for controlling distribution of scattered clones)
-Instanced object scattering (Look up Howie Farkes's stuff like the hidden lake and whatnot for Carrara and Vue. D|S requires a commercial script to do the same and yet... Not a single D|S user gave a crap about this functionality, even said it was useless, until DS got its own script to do the same but at half the efficiency)
-True dynamic cloth. Prior to version 8 a script was needed (Sparrowhawk's script)
-Dynamic Hair similar to C4D - just not as advanced. There are some very amazing results I've seen with Carrara's hair. I never could get the hang of it though
Cons:
-The most primitive modeling system you will ever see. Decades old at this point.
-A crappy manual (D|S has a better one. I re-state my complaint that D|S is their one-and-only and Bryce, Hexagon, and Carrara may as well not even exist.)
-A buggy particle system that has KNOWN bugs dating back to Carrara 4 and 5 that are still not fixed.
-Layered material system (Node-based tends to be more flexible)
-I don't think it can use Genesis related stuff, unless there's some plugin out there.
-Minimal support provided by DAZ, compared to the support D|S gets.
If you're really looking for a better 3D application, I'd say save up for Lightwave or Cinema 4D. If you can afford either, then Carrara's literally not worth it. There's still a loyal group of users, but DAZ's continued lack of concern for it in favor of D|S is causing them to dwindle.
So while I'd *like* to think that Carrara is still worth it, I'm not so sure at this point. I don't think it has any of the fancy light presets or the Reality exporters (Dreamlight openly mocked everyone in the Carrara forum once before, and said he'd never allow his presets to be ported to Carrara, and the creator of the Reality exporter - the last I heard - had no interest in making one for Carrara.)
So I'd really suggest Lightwave or Cinema 4D (Prime or Visualize) if you're looking to save up for a larger application.
