Description
In a desperate attempt to save the rest of her captured crewmates, Lena offered herself to fulfill one of the captors more strange demands: a sacrifice to their 'protector'. Lena knew what the 'protector' was: a giant monster that roamed the captors' home planet. It ate and scared off other large animals, and were somewhat tamable. Local villages would rely on the beasts for protection, and they kept them from destroying their villages by offering food and water. However their home planet had suffered a catastrophic event where most of the life was killed off. These 'protectors' were essentially extinct, and Lena knew this. So she believed she could pull a fast one: offer to be a sacrifice, get dropped off on the dying planet, then radio for help and be rescued. To Lena's relief, the captors accepted her offer, and her crew was released.
She was stripped of her clothes and brought to the bottom of the ship. So far, so good. She figured they were taking her to a drop pod. She was led to a large hangar, or what appeared to be one, and let go. At first, she was surprised that her captors let her out of their grasp, and even more surprised when they completely left the room. She heard a thud, the windows opened, and now she could see one of the 'protectors' right in front of her. Lena stepped back, expecting the creature to charge her. It did not, though it did bow its head down and slightly open its maw. For ten long minutes there was a silent stand off between the two of them.
Soon Lena mustered up the courage to get closer. She examined the strange, and slightly ugly, monster that stood before her. Despite walking around, and even under it, the thing didn't move. At one point she knelt in front of its head and curiously touched a tooth. Once again, it remained still. Lena was mystified by how calm and tame this creature was. It had now been forty five minutes since she entered the room, and it still didn't outright attack her. She edged herself closer and closer to it as her courage filled. Clearly this thing wasn't as violent as stories have told.
At about the hour mark, the creature's tongue slowly licked its lips. Its jaws still hung open, and its body was still as stiff as a statue; only the barbed and drool covered tongue moved to wet the gums and teeth that surrounded it. Lena shifted nervously. Was it growing impatient? Was it signaling what it wanted? Would it attack her now? Lena was completely unsure what to do. She could try to find an escape now, or perhaps this thing could help her. Maybe if she did crawl into its jaws it would help her escape somehow. Or maybe it was simply waiting for her to willingly come to her doom. Lena edged closer, debating her next move...

This rather simple scene actually helped me learn something very important: how to render an Octane image without rendering the sky background. That allows me to put whatever I want behind it. In this case, a space backdrop that I put together in Photoshop.
