Description
I ran a series of three workshops for local people to come and make candle lanterns. The lanterns were incorporated into the event as the children parade their lanterns onto the field to begin the show and also take part during the performance. The lanterns are made by joining together withies (thin willow boughs stripped of their bark) using masking tape. These are then covered with high-saturation tissue paper soaked in latex glue. As the glue dries it turns the tissue translucent and stretches it tight and pretty waterproof across the frame.
After the workshops were over and the glue had dried I turned the lanterns into a school of squid to match our nautical theme.

hey, this sound like fun. I'm about to lead all the workshops in our camp, do you have any suggestions? Could you please tell me what other workshops you have had there?

Not sure if my notes are getting through so:
Hi
Thanks for enquiring about the workshops I have helped to run. The lantern workshops for the festival of fire are pretty complex, I wouldn't recommend trying to do one without supervision from someone who knows what they are doing. The process is simple in concept but tricky to get right! I reccomend Engineers of the Imagination: Welfare State Handbook (Paperback)
by Tony Coult (Editor), Baz Kershaw (Editor) # Publisher: Methuen Drama (3 Nov 1983) Language English ISBN-10: 0413528006 ISBN-13: 978-0413528001. This book is my bible!!
Another, easier and cheaper session I have run is a Big Painting session. Get sheets of MDF or plywood 8'x4', strengthen them by screwing strips of wood onto the back then paint them with cheap white matt emulsion. Collect leftover scraps of paint (emulsion only, easier to clean!) preferably in bright colours. We bought small 1Litre tins of primary coloured paint to make the colours bolder although we found by asking around we got quite a bit of coloured paint people had left over from redecorating. DONT use black or very dark colours as they quickly muddy the painting. Collect or buy cheap paintbrushes, sponge shapes, rollers etc. We also used broken twigs with frayed ends, fingers, hands and feet. We set up our boards against a wall and invited passers by to make their mark. Over one day 200 people painted four boards which can be seen here, here, here, and here. I made tee-shirts into aprons by slitting them up the back and sewing a tie onto the collar at the top. These were invaluable for children!!
I am planning a printing workshop for primary school children in my village which will be quite simple. Get small (10" square, A4 size or so pieces of perspex (these can be cut easily enough from a larger sheet with a craft knife, sand the edges so little fingers don't get cut! Put the perspex over pictures from magazines (i.e. disposable) chosen by the child. The let the child paint over the image onto the perspex using printers ink (relief ink, intaglio is too sticky, gooey and impossible to get out of clothes!) Once the child is happy with their painting place a sheet of plain paper on top of the ink and rub gently with the back of a wooden spoon, or dab with a sponge or rolled up sock etc (not too hard) and peel back. Hey presto an inverted picture. You can get two or even three prints from one painting and the child can add more paint or scrub it all off and start again if they want
Hope this helps!! I really hope your workshops go wonderfully! Please let me know how it goes and post the results on DA for everyone to see!
Phill

WOW. thank you Veery much for absolutely exhausting answer You've inspired me to try some painting on faces, that would be quite good also..and i've found already where i can buy the colors and stuff. i'm planning (besides of other things) Scottish dancing, taking photos, knotting and singing
I guess that might be fun. I'm doing these things with people who are older than i am. (usually around 16-20) so i've added also football and Frisbee. and did you plan to give links to the "here" places? i mean the boarders
I would like to see that.. maybe that i might do something similar...ummmm
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me!! I'm very grateful for that
