Please give me some tips on how to do this, I want to do a Pony Pumpkin this year but have no idea how to carve them depth wise, only with a knife old school style

I printed up my stencil on paper and taped it to the pumpkin.

Cut it with an xacto knife.

Rubbed the pumpkin with blue food coloring for the lines to get more contrast.

Cut deeper and notched a v shape to clear away from the lines.

Used a clay scraper to remove the flesh down to a certain level.

Washed it up.

This is really good, buuuuuut I'd suggest carving to different depths for greater contrast for your next one. The pupil of her eye seems to be, well, eyeless and just floating on her face. The whites of her eyes should be quite deeply carved.

It could also just be the picture. Goodness knows I've had a miserable time taking good pictures of jack-o-lanterns in past.

What'd you use to carve with?

Xacto knife and some clay tools. It was my first attempt at carving in this fashion. I wanted to go for more contrast, but I cut too deep.

...but the dwarves dug too greedily and too deep...

I was actually thinking that when I wrote the reply.
