You make up something like a new OC, game, etc. then you realize someone has already done something like that. It's annoying especially when you think or make up something and you actually really like what you made or thought of then you realize it's so close to something that it's as if you copied from someone or something. A stamp for those who dislike (or hate) it when that happens. *Drags idea.png and idea.txt to my Recycle Bin*Related content

Everything has been done, it just hasn't been don by you.
You shouldn't be discouraged by the fact that someone already had an idea that you had, because it's still your idea as well.Β Look at how many things that actually made it have similarities to other things.Β There's always going to be a similarity somewhere, because pretty much anything has been done anyway - it honestly doesn't matter.Β What ultimately matters is how you yourself write your idea, and you will most likely do it differently to whoever else did it.
People will accuse people of copying even if there's only a slight similarity these days anyway, but those people clearly don't research things anyway, while a true fan would be able to either look past or even celebrate the similarities.

This is me when naming my characters. I just feel discouraged when I find out my character and somebody else's character have similar, if not exactly the same names.

I don't just drag the idea.png to the recycle bin. I dump it in to the biohazard bin.
That makes me think of a thing. When I was little (4-5 yrs) I thought, one day, about time. I was thinking about coming up with a new type of second, and came up with the "milisecond". Ten minutes later I turned on the TV to watch a documentary about birds, and you should have seen my face when I heard how they used the milisecond I invented 10 minutes ago.
Since then, I have a form of half-hate towards the milisecond...

I was bored at home one day and came up with the idea of jean diapers. I forgot about it until around a year later, they're in fucking stores and some other dude is making tons of cash for it. >:c he probably came up with the idea before I did but I was sorta mad.

I have an OC named Viktor Petrov, who is a little unusual for a DeviantArt OC. He's a 42-year-old man with a mullet and a Russian accent (he's from Russia, BTW) and there was this one cartoon with something slightly similar.
The other character had a mullet and a Russian accent, similar to Petrov, so I felt bad about making my character. However, the two characters aren't really that similar. The one on the show was this evil muscular guy, and he was like a boxer or something. My character, Petrov, is a supporting character, and he's nowhere near that. He's a suburbanite wedding planner married to a woman named Electra. Oh, and Petrov is also a little on the pudgy side.

New OC, basically almost similar colors, or the same name to really irritate others. It's more like saying to them, "That name is used by others I assume not just you". As much as I want to say that, but then again I'm the target in the end.

Agreed. In fact a while ago I made up this story, and I was super eager to write it. When I asked my brother about it, he said it was close to something called "The Hunger Games." I've never read it, nor really heard of it. Needless to say I really don't want to write the story anymore, depite how much I wanted to. :/

Sometimes, when I have a really good idea, I try to get it done quickly before someone else might, and I don't tell a soul before I'm done in case it might spread to another artist somewhere in the world. Sometimes I also browse my idea on DA to see just how common it is. If it's very common, or not common yet underdeveloped, I don't freight too much.
But don't feel too bad. When you think about it, there are a lot of similarities existing right now in the media and entertainment industry.
(Ex. Dungeons and Dragons, WOW, Lord of the Rings and so many other fantasy franchise don't seem noticeably different from each other, story plots are constantly being recycled, lots of war games look basically the same, Aurora looks like Princess Odette, the beginning of Kelly Clarkson's 'Already Gone' sounds like a complete rip off of Beyonce's 'Halo,' unoriginality in that whole wolf fandom, Atlantis and Avatar almost have the same story concept as Pocahontas and Ferngully, Vampire Diaries pretty much IS Twilight, every Disney sitcom is no different from a Nickelodeon sitcom, Jay Sean sounds like Jayson Derulo, Darla Dimple looks like Baby Doll from Batman, and don't forget all the cliche design ideas for different kinds of characters...) I may be wrong about some of these, they are just my perspectives from a glance.
So generally, I think every original idea out there might have at least one other person trying it too, but don't let that stop you!
