Counterpart to the MPX, Jenson & Loque's MPK represents their first effort to rework the original HK designs they acquired during the global restructurement of the early 1990's.

Essentially, the MPK is direct derivative of the MP5. Though the engineering inside has changed little, "all new" part blueprints were created to secure JL's hold on the design rights. Notably, they chose to keep the full size MPK at the "Navy" length, and the PDW variant lacks any vertical foregrip. Despite these unusual choices, it successfully entered full production in 1993. The alterations in design would continue to see use in JL firearms from then on, allowing JL to establish it's own distinct brand style even though they stood (somewhat questionably) on HK's shoulders.

Apart from the unusual history behind why these designs came to light, technically the MPK was a very solid design. The weapon was designed specifically to be able to adapt to a number of cartridge sizes, including 9mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, 10mm AUTO, and interestingly, .22 LR.

The .22LR version is of note as it was created as a sort of "distraction weapon"; intended to hold a comparatively huge amount of ammunition in a standard size magazine and expend this ammunition at a high rate of fire, similar to a squad support weapon. It was of course considerably less lethal than a true SAW, but remarkably effective in tricking those being shot at that they were under heavy suppressive fire. The standard magazines for .22LR held around 300 bullets in a cylindrical magazine.

In the late 90s, the MPX would later come to take the place of the MPK ( [link] ), as a heavy duty SMG capable of handling large pistol rounds such as .45 Colt, 10mm AUTO, .44 Magnum, and .357 Magnum. It never ended up fully replacing the MPK though, as both remained in production.
